My newest project for the kids is to let them assemble and paint two space marines each with the least amount of intervention or assistance on my part. Naturally, I cleaned the parts for them and help them by holding the model glue, but I'm trying to stay hands off as much as possible.

We started with the basic bolter-toting space marines from the boxed set, which came with the Goff Orks and Gretchin and space marines. I can't remember what the set was called, but we found a bunch of the plastics at my Mom & Dad's house during our last trip to Los Angeles. I thought this would be a good start for them.

We're painting them in a basic Ultramarines pattern. Why? Because I happen to have a can of Ultramarines Blue spraypaint.

Assembly (after I cleaned them ... sort of)

Washing with a mx of Liquitex Glaze Medium, Water, and Liquetex Paynes Grey. This is about the only place where I've helped them out (other than the cleaning, which involves sharp knives and priming, which involves spray paint). They cover most of the figure, but miss spots, like between the marine's back and the backpack, so I get those for them.

Figures as they stand as of bedtime. Of course the washed one is on the right, the basecoated one is to the left.

I'm hoping that tomorrow we'll get to the white trim on the shoulder pads and painting the base. That would be enough for them to play with them. I'm trying to decide whether or not I want to do the eyes. In hindsight, I should of had them paint them red first. They could have covered up any oops with Ultramarine Blue and the wash would have filled in the crevices.

The continuing saga with step-by-step

Hmm, look better than my first minis(and I was 13 back then). Hopefully you don't intervent too much, remember when I was kid and my dad "helped" mee too much.. It usually ruined most of my fun :( At the moment I'm having opposite situation. I am trying to get my dad intrested in Blood Bowl. He has always loved the modelling kits (expecially 60's cars :p) and strategy games so it shouldn't be so hard.. But back to the topic, if and when you run out the Ultramarines blue spray, what are you going to do? IIRC Tamiya has good range of spray primers, and they had the French Blue(TS-10) color in it. It's same as Ultramarines blue. And ultramarine blue shouldn't be so hard color to find in spray bottles, right?

GW will release a laser pointer for determining LOS in 5th ed. I have always thought that the lasguns have been on board fom RT era

Yeah, that's kind of the point. We started off with them sitting in my lap and my helping them paint, which wasn't so easy and detracted from the fun. That's why those plastic peg marines are so nice. Easy to assemble and paint.

They can already recognize all of the Warmachine and WH40K factions. Explaining fluff and history is a little tough sometimes.

Judging by the pics you're pretty young

Good idea, though. Most of the things I acquired a taste for could've been introduced to me in an earlier age by my parents or in school*, instead of just putting a pencil and a paper in my hand.

*Except intercourse, that would be the babysitter's task.

That's a few years younger than I was when I started painting models, and already better than my first minis. I hope this is something your kids enjoy, and that they keep with it. I'm looking forward to seeing the next installments.

Thanks for the interest. They are only 5-years old, but very interested in miniatures. The progress is slow, but I'll post some more pictures after we finish the trim on the shoulder pads.

Well, you haven't seen the lining on the shoulder pads yet :( . Remember, the marines were primed with Ultramarine Blue spray.

Made some more progress today. Added some white trim to the shoulder pads and did the eyes. We'll have to go back and do some major clean up. One of my boys also had some pretty serious hiccups, but refused to take a break. We also basecoated the base black in preparation for basing.

Basing operations. Should be able to get a picture of the finished bases tomorrow.

I had to help them a bit in cleaning excess sand off the edge of the base and putting down the static grass. Otherwise, the painting is all theirs.

Got through the basing. I'll have to admit to helping them out a bit here. We had to clean off some of the sand that had gotten glued to the sides of the bases, and I had to help them sprinkle the static grass over the glue. It didn't quite swish like the sand did. "Highlight" of the night was one of the lads blowing into the container of static grass.

I wish my first models were that good

At eleven, I had put in a plastic 6-man Marine Squad more paint than in a 1500 point footsloggin' ork army.

They are rocking.

Ah, I do fondly recall some of my first paint jobs. They wer mostly monster in my pockets.

And I recall painting all of the 2nd ed marines by coating them in tentacle pink.

They look nicely done with the bases too. Tell them good job.
