So, it was time to say goodbye to the old girl.
I've been driving a '99 Solara SE (V6) since summer of 2002. Bought it used with 60,000 or so miles on it. She drove great, but she was starting to show her age, and even Toyotas start to give up at 120,000 miles.
So, I bought a new car. 2008 Mazda 3s Sport Hatchback. Gray with red/black interior. Drives very peppy and seems to so far be getting way better gas mileage.
She has 90 miles on it, of which I've put 89. Eeep!
Interestingly, it's only the second car payment I've had in my life (on a 1992 Dodge Intrepid-oy, what a POS): we bought the solara outright.
It was sad to let the old car go, but it was time. And so far my new car's been a lot of fun!

I recently bought my first new car as well. I was looking at the Mazda 3 but ended up getting a Civic SI, mostly because I really didn't think I was treated right by the salespeople at my local Mazda dealer. The hatchback was actually the model I was looking at. Its a great car.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to entering a car dealership again.

I just paid off 2 vehicles back in February, and I am truly glad those are done. Both are japanese, so I should get a few years out of them at least. Someday I will have to enter dealership again, but it will be on my terms. They d't like it? They can kiss my pale Casper hindend.

Well yeah, walking out is important, and I'll do it if I'm dealing. But the whole
process makes me ill.
I don't even like driving all that much. I'm thinking I'll just end up with a Scion or
something for the no-haggle.

I agree with you that the process is a bad one mal. I've had horrible experiences at car dealerships. Given a choice between doing that again, or a Coca-Cola enema, I'd have to sit down and think that one over.

I actually don't mind haggling. I was at the dealership where I ended up buying my vehicle for close to four hours. It is just that the Mazda dealer was trying to get me to sign things before I even decided I wanted the car. The salesman was even writing up handwritten documents and wanting me to sign to agree to trade in allowances, etc. I didnt care for it at all.

NICE!
best way to haggle is to send faxes to a number of dealers and get the best offer. They can only negotiate so far anyway.

When they tried to push extended warranties on my i'd just walk, and before I was out the door they'd come down, same thing with prices, interest rates, etc. I don't mind that. I guess many people in this country look at haggling as arguing, while I just look at it as trying to find what price you want to pay and what the dealer can let it go for. I don't doubt I over paid, but I guess I learned something for next time.
No, what irritated me about the other dealer is that he offered me a certain amount for my trade in, which was very good considering the AC didnt work and I had some body damage and glass damage to the vehicle. He asked if I would buy that car today if he gave me that for trade in, and I said "I very well might do that". Later, mentioned that I had said that and wrote up something BY HAND and said " ok, we'll give you that for the trade in" and wanted me to sign it. I was like, " Dude, I'm not signing something I havent even looked at that you just wrote by hand just because I said I was pleased with the trade in allowance." After that they showed me the door, and I was just fine with that.

I hate dealing with car dealers as well. I know I got an okay price, and I got an okay trade in (never as much as you want, but that's life), but every interaction always feels like you're getting taken for a ride. I also ignore extended warranties etc. My response is usually, "huh. So, you're coming down another $500, right? And do you have a clergy Discount?"
A prof of mine used to let his wife do the negotiating (she used to be a prof. at harvard law teaching negotiation tactics) and the dealers would just walk out of the room--they couldn't handle a woman negotiating with them. Now, he goes in with his wife on the cellphone, and speaks to her in Hebrew (which has it's own intimidation level). Works better.

All I got to say is "Used cars for the win yo". Seriously. If you are finding that the hustle of dealing with a car dealership is really all that bad, just buy a used car from someone. Now this has its own drawbacks of no warrantee and no sure fire way to to know its all in good working order, but you get much more reasonable prices and you don't have to deal with quite such a crazy environment of pushy people. As an added bonus when you go for used cars, you can often get them cheep enough that you can buy them outright. I've never made a car payment in my life and while I may end up doing more repair work than those who buy new cars from dealers, I think I come out way ahead of the game in over all money spent.

Phoenix: I had intended to buy used, but new was actually just about the same price, and, well, the price was right.
But yes, buying lightly used is usually a better idea. About a 3 year old car off-lease is perfect, as it's lost most of its depreciated value by then but is still in pretty good shape mechanically (probably no more than 30k based on most leases).

I know. I probably could have gotten a low mileage car that was two or three years old for what I put down. I told myself again and again, get a used car, cars are too expensive to buy, etc etc. Yah, I'm a sucker.

I just put my dad's old '92 mazda 2100 pickup (with 385k clicks) down because my wife needed a car for work and I no longer needed it and she couldn't drive stick. So we got a protege for her to drive now. The truck never had any major work on it accept for a single cracked cyclinder head back in 2000. It was a great truck, I'll miss it.

Negotiating with the dealership IS a headache... So, do what I do.
Don't negotiate.
Know ahead of time what your payments will be on different amounts (you can find calculators for this online). Decide ahead of time what you can afford.
Walk in, tell them what you will give them for the car and tell them what you want for trade in. Tell them you will not negotiate. It's that price, or you walk.
They'll think you're bluffing until the first time you start to walk out the door.
It's what I did & I got a better deal than expected.
I told them my numbers & the salesman came back with their counter-offer, which was only $100 more than I'd said.
"Okay. Well, that doesn't work. Thanks for your time." Turning to my wife, I said, "Come on, Hon. Let's go."
The salesman got a panicked look on his face and said, "Wait. You'd lose this car over just $100?"
I said, "I told you my numbers weren't negotiable. The question is 'Why is a big business willing to lose this deal over just $100'."
He said he'd go talk to his sales manager.
I told him not to bother. To get me to stay, he'd have to come back with $500 LESS than my initial offer.
He came back with that number and I drove away with the car that night.
If they believe you'll walk, you're "in."
If they discover that you're bluffing, you're screwed.
The rest of the transaction went well. I financed through them and gave them a warning that I knew what % I qualified for already, and to not screw with me.
Their offer was actually better than the great rate I'd already found.
Yes, I know it's not a big deal that a dealership beat a bank's rate (even though it was the one I work for and my rate included my employee discount), but they try to find more ways to make a buck off of you if they can. Many dealerships will offer you a higher rate loan first, because that broker offered them a better commission.
Just be firm & don't negotiate.

I bought my first new car back in January, a little blackberry pearl (ok, it's purple) 2008 Honda Fit. It was so damn sweet to drive off in a car with 9 miles on it, and so shiny too
I too brought the woman along to haggle, as I tend to be a pushover when it comes to people being "nice" to me. But going in I had the KBB value for my trade-in (2001 Audi A4 V8), stats for the Fit including dealer invoice price, and most importantly a quote from another Honda dealer for a price very close to invoice. For the Fit this was all the haggling we could do for price, as the mark up is quite low for the little sub-compact. What took a long time was getting a decent trade-in for the Audi, which turned out to be like pulling teeth. It being a V8 and getting older (approaching 90k I think), nobody was interested, and it had been in an accident with the previous owner. I held out and got $8k for it, which was $3k less than KBB but we called it sold at that and everyone was happy.
Since then I haven't missed my European autos one bit - had a Mercedes before the Audi - and am loving the 30-35 mpg

Nice.
I've walked away from deals and they let me walk before. When we bought my wife's car, they did nothing to stop us. Perhaps because we weren't going to finance and just buy outright, perhaps for some other reason, but we kept to our guns. Found the car for the price we wanted eventually from a very small dealer, but it was interesting how they called our bluff...and upon discovering that it wasn't a bluff, didn't stop us either...
I did get a good rate on the payment and a good price. WAAAY better than I was expecting (1.9%). They also gave me a bunch of freebies when I asked for a clergy discount, so it all worked out.

It's been a while since I was told this story so please bear with me.
My friends mother was the editor of Fortune magazine several years ago and she went to a Volvo dealership to get a new car. She told the salesman (very politely), "You paid xx for this car and that is what I am going to pay for it. Plus, I am going to give you my current car (2 year old Volvo, low miles, great condition) with a trade in price of $0."
The salesman of course said he couldn't do that so the manager came over. She told him the same thing and got the same response.
She said, "Do you want to call your boss or should I?". So the dealership manager takes her name and calls his boss. He then comes back and says "Mam, do you know what color you would like that in?"

A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure.
