After seeing so many good blogs on here and following many of them with interest, I thought I'd give it a go at creating my own.

The project I'm working on is for our local gaming club show we are having in October, in which there is a painting competition. Last year I got nowhere with my Death Korps guardsman so thought I'd start a project from scratch. The idea I went for was a true-scale Space Marine of pre-heresy Emperor's Children. Many ideas popped to mind but I decided on a standard bearer in the end, but who knows, that might change still.

Having been the first time I'd ever used greenstuff, I was pretty wary but thought its worth a shot.

This pic is purely for the purpose of scale.

I managed to get hold of the head I wanted and think the breast plate came out really well.

Some of the bits on the legs look a little rough but they aren't too bad, but hopefully once I get round to buying some files they will even out.

Thats 4 days work so far, hopefully I can keep this up, its getting kind of adictive.

I salute you on your endeavour!
I think the waist might be a little too tall, at least compared to the shins. Adding some height in the greaves might help correct that.

Hmmm, possibly. If anything we're probably talking a mm too tall. For the sake of ruining the model and doing alot more work, I can live with that. Cheers for the observation though.

Unforunately few replies on here!

Cool project DM, and good choice on the termi legs and arms to biggerize the man. Good start so far, and impressively smooth chest piece there! Going to be sculpting an eagle on there, as Empy Kids were the only pre-heresy with it?

Cheers for the replies guys.

@ Boss_savage. I had a few ideas about the eagle, either use a FW brass one, attempt a sculpt or freehand paint some kind of ornate one. I'm very new to greenstuff so don't think a sculpt will be an option unfortunately so have plucked for a painted version or some kind of equally snazzy design.

I'm also thinking about the banner at this stage. I haven't drawn any possible designs and nothing has shown up on google so still thinking of ideas at the moment.

Just a wee update.

Finished constructing the base last night (minus gravel) just to show how I expect him to be positioned.

Have also been working on sketching ideas for a banner. This is what I came up with today on my break. The quaters are purple and dark green. The angel is meant to represent Fulgrim receiving the Imperial Eagle. The scroll says "Perfection Above All". Since I work in archives I will get a friend to translate that into proper latin for me.

I must say, I'm quite suprised by the lack of comments here. I get the impression I'm talking to myself. lol. Anyway...finished assembling the model last night so thought I would post pics.

Can anyone suggest material to make the banner from? I want it to have lots of folds in the banner to look like it is caught in the wind and not sure what to use. And can anyone think of other ideas for a design of the banner?

Toothpaste tubes are great, as you can bend them into any postion you want, and as long as you varnish them after, the paint doesnt fall off too badly.

What are you planning to put on his chest? Its looking a bit empty at the moment lol.

@blinky. I never considered toothpaste tubes tbh. I know what you mean about the chest plate. I'm kind of put off sculpting something incase I mess it up so opted for a painted design. I though of painting the Imperial eagle or something similar.

I like it alot... You know what would make it really pimp? If you carve a design into that chestplate. It would look awesome!

You can make banners out of thin plasticard. If you put them in boiling water you can shape them to have folds. Looking good at the mo, this is a really promising build.

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink.

You can also use the foil off a bottle of wine. It comes off in a nice flat sheet and is quite bendable

I like your idea to freehand a nice fancy eagle onto his chestplate. If your freehand is up to it I think that's a pretty appropriate classic art thing that I think the Empy Kids would do to adorn their armor, rather than slap big press-molded wings on them.

Not sure on the banner, but some ideas have been tossed out that sound workable.

My one critique, are you going to clean the moldlines off after construction but before paint? Because the backpack, gun, etc. have some big ones that are bugging me

Given the potential complexity of your banner design, I'd be tempted to go down the traditional route of taking a piece of paper, drawing the design on it while its still flat, then soak it in PVA.

You need to be careful it doesn't tear, but you can get some great (and realistic looking) folds - and because the PVA dries clear you can see your design and 'paint by numbers' after that without worrying about the odd perspective effects of folded cloth.

Looking good anyway

Alot a great suggestions for the banner. I'm also toying with the idea of a fine textile material soaked in watered down PVA aswell, this is a project of many firsts for me. Included in this is a substantial amount of freehand and NNM.

@ Boss_Salvage. Oh man, I see what you mean. lol. Cheers for pointing that out actually, I'm quite notorious for totally forgetting about mold lines until after the paint is down.

Okay people, I need honest opinions on this. Cut up and only *cough* Iron Maiden *cough* t-shirt last night and soaked it in PVA. Let it set overnight and heres the result. I needs opinions on scale, movement etc.

Incase its hard to see, the bit of banner directly above his head is folded back on itself.

Cheers

That looks really good, maybe a little large, to the point where he'd need to hold it with two arms, but he is a space marine after all. What dimensions was the original piece of fabric?

That banner is too big. It distracts the eye away from the awesome figure. Id go with a lot smaller banner. Maybe a quarter. I know thats small, but Id want the figure to draw attention and not the banner.

The folds etc looks really good though. Id say your textile+PVA experiment turned out very well.

Agreed, far too large. Good size might be twice the height of the marine and no wider than he is (actually banner wouldn't be that long, the banner pole would end at his height x2).

Looking at it now I've got back from work, I have to agree. Just made a new, smaller version with proper ties to the pole. It was a serious nightmare getting it into position with glue getting just about everywhere. I just hope this one sets now its set up. Will keep you guys informed but thanks for the thoughts.

I'd think heated plasticard would make a better banner than that. Have you tried it?

I can't say I have. I've asked people at our gaming club where to get it round here, but noone seems to know.

Okay, had the radiator on all evening to get this dry. Excuse the shinyness, I've had to laqure the material to get rid of the weave and to make it generally smoother. I'm hoping this will disappear after i've undercoated the model.

Generally, I'm pretty happy with this new banner, its a better size and has a bit more detail along the pole.

A bit past that point now, but I just wanted to add that I love the head you went for. It is *exactly* what I had in mind when reading about the emperor's children in the HH book series so well done picking that, a very good call. I must confess that I am not a huge fan of the banner though as it looks a bit too ragged for the perfect emperor's children in my jaded opinion, but I guess it all comes down to your paintjob, which I am looking forward to seeing!
