So I’ve played three games so far using the new Warriors of Chaos, though two of them were low-point intro games with new players, where I wasn’t really playing my best or particularly trying to win, so hopefully three losses out of three isn’t too bad a sign.

I’m hoping I won’t have to resort to a radical/unbalanced design for wins (6-8 chariots), or use the Banner of the Gods, because I have no interest in buying/fielding the former, and the latter just feels like a gimmick. Still, that might wind up being what it comes down to. For the moment I’m trying to work out a winning list without either.

What do people think about these two?

Both of them use the block units as a center, with the marauders and dogs fleeing if/when necessary to set up charges from the hittier stuff. The Exalted on foot w/GW & HoME obviously goes in an infantry block to allow it to actually receive a charge from hitty stuff (like heavy cav) in the front and have a chance of winning. The mages are mostly magic missile fire support, targeting enemy shooters, fast cav, and redirectors to help the army get to grips on my terms.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm inclined to go with the first list. Most of the differences are subtles, but I think I'd suffice with 2 level-2 wizards if I can turn one unit of Marauders into Slaanesh Warriors and have enough space for 2 Spawn. I know you think Warriors are overpriced, but I think the first list trades a little bit of firepower for more staying power.

I probably need to work in a BSB, actually, as long as the list forces you to take infantry. That would give them a better chance to stick around, thus allowing the chariots and knights to countercharge.

Ill do what I can. The new WD list is actually awfully strong, so its a good choice.

Boths lists could use some work.
List 1:
-First exalted should be sword of might + enchanted shield for dealing with all the variou thrings WE, HE and Lizards can throw at you, he is very strong against those lists
-Helm of Many Eyes is terrible, you will fail stupidity 1/3 times, so twice a game. Sure you are immue to psych in combat now...but do you really want to fail key charges 33% of the time?
-Demonic mount is sort of pointless for the sorcerer, I knw what your thinking with the battle mage options, but just dont. He is very easily picked off by aggressive hero use. Barded chaos steeds are very good for the 2+ save however. Overall best to keep them cheap, and with Marks of Tzeentch (access to all lores gives LOTS of options).
-Usually best to run 2 x scroll + chaos familiar, and even that is fairly "magic light", but what can you do? Not much sadly.
-If one of the heroes is going to be sitting in the warriors, they dont need to buy a MoS to join the unit anymore, Mark of Nurgle gives you fear which may prevent an enemy from charging you so is a nice alternative.
-Standard in Maruaders are BIG no nos...the banner +100VP is worth as much as the unit again! Very easy VPs for your opponent in a list that otherwise doesnt give them out at all.
-Rest of the list looks quite good, although I would drop the banner of wrath altogether and give the war banner to the warriors on foot.

To shake things up with this list, you have a few options. I think a BSB in the warriors would be a good idea - they may not be autobreakable, but any combat they lose they start going down at Ld7 or worse...and an additional +1CR is very nice. With some extra points, get them up to 18 (number of slaanesh ), so that with a mounted BSB you have US 20, 3 ranks, standard, war banner and BSB. Even if they never kill their points back, the board control and VP denial options from this unit is spectacular.

Otherwise, another option for the General is Sword of Might + Armour of Damnation + Shield, for T5 As2+ re-rolls to hit him, and then use him to take out enemy chariots, monsters, characters, skirmishers, treemen...whatever! Keep the BSB within 12" and he is solid. This would let you go Sword of Striking + Enchanted Shield on the BSB, for hitting on 2+ and 0+ AS - great for challenging enemy characters who would otherwise mess up the warriors around him.

Another option again is to leave the BSB on foot, but with armour of damnation + biting blade, then with the tzeentchian sorcerers run beasts magic for bears anger - the BSB can dish out 6 S7 attacks with T5. Little moredice dependant that one, and not as all around solid.

My concerns are very much the same in the second list. You'll have to shelter characters in the knight units, which after they lose 2 models can no longer provide "Look out Sir", which will mean your heroes become very vulnerable...you're alo much more vulnerable to psychology on a whole, which is never a good thing with expensive troops and a maximum leadership of 8!

Id run the first list, with any of those potential changes to make it a little nastier.

One thing I noticed which got a big power boost in the new wd-list is the banner of gods. The improved range + the ability to kit the aspiring champ with marks and normal gear makes the bsb a good (albeit expensive) buy especially if one wields chaos warriors who certainly can use all the help/tricks they can get.

It is nice, but I dont think any well designed list would ever have to dispel it...or that it really makes for that strong a magic phase...7 casting dice on fire/death isnt scary, and nor is a bound spell fire ball.

Still, in a more magicy list it probably is more viable.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. Fazz, you’re the same who posts on TWF? I appreciate the detailed advice. I’m still trying to get to grips with the list, and unfortunately don’t get to play as many practice games as I want to.

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the SoM + Ench Shield. I tried this combo in the list I brought to the Colonial GT, but was disappointed. Maybe I just wasn’t up against the right armies. Originally I wanted to use the Berserker Sword, but sadly that’s not an option anymore. The armor of D+ SoM combo (optionally supported by BSB for re-rolls) is also a nice one. I think I may just try that out.

I recognize the vulnerability of the HoME, but figured striking first at S7 was worth the trouble. Most of the time this unit isn’t going to get into combat on its own terms anyway, so adding something that might give them a chance against the enemy’s hammer units (which is all that will be thrown at them) seemed like a good idea. Still, you’re right that the odds are just too high. So he’s really my best candidate to be changed to a BSB. Your suggested SoS + Ench Sh combo sounds nice. Using him to challenge hitty characters and keep the warriors alive is definitely good advice.

I think the Mark of Nurgle would be a great option for the reason you outlined, except that you do still need to have the same mark to join a marked unit.

I actually think I might stick with the daemonic mount sorcerer. I really think he’s a neat option, and 2 S4 + 2 S5 with 2+ save and 18” charge gives me another element which can take on enemy fast movers, skirmishers, and shooting units. I’m not sure exactly what you mean by him being taken out by aggressive heroes. He’s pretty maneuverable. Could you elaborate on that point? Mark of Tzeentch makes sense, though I’m generally a Slaanesh/Undivided purist. I’ll probably give him a paint scheme which can go either way.

As far as 2 mages w/scroll and familiar, I think it’s okay, and the Banner of Wrath is a pretty nice addition. A fireball isn’t all that impressive, but it does do useful damage to fast/maneuverable stuff I otherwise have trouble catching, and power level 5 is really nice. I’m finding lately that a bound spell or two in an otherwise light-to-medium magic phase makes the phase overall more effective and reliable. Of course having a “real” magic phase with the L4 may be the easier route, as it gives me a better chance of doing real damage in that phase, which is a nice supplement since the army has no shooting.

I find that the standards in Marauders aren’t as bad as they seem on first glance. Against some foes the extra CR is very good, and against enemies which are going to crush them anyway, I can usually just flee and deny them the banner. Still, it’s an easy place to trim points if I need to scrounge some up.

Yep, same Fazz Not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing however

I certainly like the list a lot now, looks very playable and you have some nice anti chariot / combo charge combinations going. Id like to take back my criticism of the mage on dmeon steed actually - I was playing chess last night and it occurred to me how similar in function the hero is to a bishop - any force multiplier is good! The fear causing is nice, and the hero is tough enough to run down skirmishers, light cavalry and even mage hunt! (2 attacks from sorcerer = 0.88 wounds, 2 attacks from steed = 0.11 wounds, thats a dead sorcerer!) Thats quite nice!

Overall I think the list looks great!

How are you finding the non-chosen knights to be working out? Im thinking of pulling my WD chaos out for a tournament soon, running 3 x 10 marauders, 3 x10 hounds, 3 x10 chaos knights (1 unit is chosen) all with slaanesh and a Banner of the Gods BSB - I think it will be fun lanching that at people!

Fazz out.
