So, I was sorting through some photos with my wife this week and found a bunch of miniature shots I took over ten years ago that I had pretty much forgotten about.
After some fond reminiscing I thought I’d scan ‘em up and share with you guys.
These were shot back in the days before digital cameras and I don’t have access to a neg-scanner, so these were scanned from 4x6 prints.
They really help to remind me how much I’ve improved over the years.

I’ll start with some of my earliest 40k models. These are certainly not the first 40k models I ever painted; those are lost forever in time and land-fill somewhere, probably Michigan, that’s where Toronto sends its garbage.

A pair of Inquisitors in Terminator armour, painted with the infamous Citadel metallic paint set.

A trio of Grey Knights, man I love these models.

Once again the metallic paint set rears it’s ugly head on this Dark Angel Captain.

The famous Legion of the Damned Sergeant Centurious! Fun fact: this model was painted the same day I bought him at the 100th GW store opening sale.

Here is a Slann I painted for a friend for his Birthday.

And a trio of High Elves I used in Warhammer Quest.

Next post will be some non-Citadel models from over the years. After that I’ve got some Necromunda models and lots more 40k from my two main armies back in the day; Eldar and Chaos Marines.

Now for some non-GW stuff from over the years.

First up is a guy I named “Lanky Pricknose”. He’s an old RAFM or Ral Partha giant model from the early 80’s. He was the first giant I used for my WHFB Orc & Goblin army. He only about 3” tall, and got the boot out of my army when I got my hands on the Marauder Giant years later. I still really like him though, he’s got so much character.

This guy is the “Grey Ghost”; a Heavy Gear model from the first edition of the game before they shrunk the models down.

A pair of female Clan War miniatures. I never played the game but found the idea of a female samurai very hot. Years later I would marry a Japanese woman…who knew?

A Chronopia Judge that came with the cardboard tower set. I still have an entire Firstborn army kicking around somewhere.

I’ll finish this post with three models from my Bauhaus warzone army. The second edition of that game really kicked a lot of a$$. My group stopped playing 40k for a few years thanks to this game and it’s hyper-detailed combat rules.

Next up…Eldar past and present.

Alrighty then! Movin’ along down memory lane…
This will be a bit different. I’ve collected Eldar since back in the days of Rogue Trader. I wish I had photos of my earliest models, but alas the paint jobs are only a memory now (probably a good thing as I really sucked back then). What I’ve got are some shots that were taken of my eldar army at the end of Second edition and some shots from Third edition, when I re-painted a bunch of stuff. I’ve thrown in some more recent shots of my current eldar army so you can see the progression of my skills.

Here is Eldrad as he appeared in my Second edition army. At the time I considered this one my best paint jobs. Painted in 1994.

Here is Eldrad as he appears today. Fun Fact: this is the same model as above, stripped and re-painted for my third edition army (painted 1999). The base is new, only being added within the last month. Oddly enough there are aspects of the original that I think are better than this version; the gems on the helmet being one of them. I’m also not happy with the sword and a few other things on the model. I think I am going to go back and touch up the model once again, putting the painted gems back onto the helmet and touching up the highlights. If all else fails I will buy a new Eldrad and paint him from scratch.

A warlock from the Second edition years.

And another from the current army.

Rangers from second edition. I still use these models when I want to field two units.

My current Pathfinders.

Dark Reapers from the third edition. These models had been stripped and repainted. The original look is long forgotten.

Their current counterparts.

My Third edition Scorpions; having recieved the same treatment as the Reapers. Note the lack of an Exarch.

The Phoenix Lord Karandras. This is what I used for the Exarch. Painted for Second edition (1994).

New ones.

Storm Guardians!

New Storm Guardians, painted earlier this year.

Howling Banshees. Note that these models were painted for Second edition, but later had their laspistols removed and replaced with Shuriken Pistols for Third edition.

Dire Avengers. The exarch is still one of my favorite eldar models.

A Falcon. Painted for late Second edition with Tamiya Gloss black X-1.

Not the same falcon, but a new one. Painted earlier this year.

I thought I’d throw this musician in as it’s probably the earliest eldar model I have that has survived intact through four (going on five) editions of the game. I plan on using him in my current army as a Warlock with embolden in my Seer Council.

My friends still tell jokes to this about the terracotta Warp Spiders. I don’t know what possessed me to paint them like this.

Wraithlord (or eldar dreadnought as they were known when this model was painted).

And his current incarnation, painted last year.

Ok, this is a fun one. Back in the day’s of second edition I came up with the idea for a “Guardian Lord” for my Ulthwe army. I used the Pirate Captain army list entry from the second edition codex to represent this guy. Yes, that is Teclis' sword.

Fast forward to now and I decided to resurrect the “Guardian Lord” idea. I use the rules for Prince Yriel as he’s a space pirate and it is a fitting throwback to the good ol’days. Also his rules are awesome. I love this model and use him to lead my current army frequently.

Last but not least, here’s Baharroth and Fuegan (Note Fuegan’s banner cut out of a copy of White Dwarf and Baharroth mounted on an old hex-flying base).

More trips down memory lane are on their way!

Your Eldar reminds me of my own Eldar Army. Models from previous eras mixed with newer models, occasionally in the same squad together.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing. I had completely forgotten the glory that was the metallic paint set. You can still get some of those metallic colours direct from coat d'arms (the original manufacturer of those paints), and I must admit that even though they are pretty useless by modern standards, I have the old metallic blue on order

I love those old grey knight models too... I think it is down to the sheer level of in-game power they had when they were out that gave them an air of mystery and supremacy.

Please keep it coming if you have more to share
