So Im starting a thread. Yes, Im very new to the hobby so this might not be so much of a "look how awesome stuff Ive made"-thread but more "give some feedback and help me get better"-thread but also some "if I try then you should try too"-stuff.

I just started with 40k a couple of weeks ago and my desk has rapidly transformed into my little workshop of horror... or chaos. First I was very tempted to play tyranids but since I started this

(yes its feet for my chaos titan warhound if you couldnt see that) I decided to go with CSM. Im waiting for my noise marines to arrive and in the meantime Im killing time building on my dog and my winged DP. Just got the wings (balrog baby!) today so Im carving and GSing and pinning like crazy.

Some more photos of my dog

All the leg parts and hip is built but not put together yet. Not all the joints, just the hip joint. And today I bought some 37mm diameter wooden balls for the hip joint. Will have to wait with the dog until my prince get some more love...

C&C very much welcome!

Wow, that Chaos logo is fantastic. What did you pour into the mold? It looks like professional GW stuff.

Armies Owned: Iron Warriors, Tau

Undead Titan Log
Malfred: Terminator Armor has always had room for extra boobage.
Drake_Marcus: It's true- that's why the Space Wolves love termie armour so much. The whole "bear" thing they've got going on is just a thinly veiled cover-up of their huge, hairy cleavage.

Thanks! Its just pewter. I was gonna mix in some lead (since Ive got a lot of it) but skipped it since I was excited to test the mould. Im quite glad how it turned out. The skull mould for the other lower leg plate didnt turn out well at all... Threw that mould in the bin and will try to make a new one later on.

This is looking very promising It is not often you see pewter being used, it is almost always resin, so it is going to be interesting to see how this develops, thanks for sharing it with us.

Thanks for kind words legoburner. I will definately keep sharing my crazy attempts at scratchbuilding But now Id thought Id show my DP with wings. I got it in the mail the other day so Im excited to go to work on it. The big dog will have to wait a little.

The lovely balrog wings have been cut down a bit at the "shoulder".

As you see Im doin a bit GSing to beef the DP up a bit. The wings are big so the prince needs to grow just a little. Another WIP photo.

And Im trying to build a new and bigger head. Trying to make everything bigger to match those awesome wings

Can anyone guess what this is gonna be? Yet another experiment we will have to see how it turns out...

Time for an update. Ive been hard at work on the demon prince. I love that figure. Since the wings are big Im working on enlarging the prince. Bigger and badder is the theme for this guy . But before I ramble on more about it, heres some wip photos.

The base. More skulls will be added. I think. And a few tufts of grass.

The chest. Ive removed the chain and the heads hanging on it. Also added some GS to make the chest bigger.

You also see the beginnings of the new sword Im doing. More work on that once the body is done.

All the pieces.

Ive widened the hip and added some height with a waist. Im thinking that the prince will have some fabric wrapped around the waist and spilling down in front and back. The arms will get some more length. Have already added a bit at the wrist so that the hands arent hidden so much by the armour. Such lovely hands shouldnt be hidden.

The new head. Bigger head and longer horns. Will also attempt a more noise marine looking mouth. Or open mouth with a long tong hanging out... The latter feels more demonic while the first fits in with the rest of my army. Not sure what to do...

All in all Im quite happy with the progress so far. Working with GS isnt easy but quite fun.

Also picked up a box of noise marines today. Need one more so I can make my two troops of em. I have to figure out how to make sonic blasters for the lot of em. Ill probably end up sculpting/building each one. Its only 10+ I need...

Wow. THANKS! Such words from someone with your skills is much appreciated. Im also looking forward to see how it turns out And yea, Im a master of computer science and engineering if that means anything...

Hope to have another update later today! Also working on some fluff for the army. Have clear ideas as to how they should look, modelling-wise. Not sure of colors though. Any suggestions is much appreciated.

Small update. Have done a bit more work on the sword and head. Everything is still wip.

Head and tongue (to big? I think so...). Any suggestions on what to do with the jaw? Small or big teeth? Tongue or not?

The wings arent glued on yet, just stuck onto the pins. Looking good! *grins* Will bend the wings a bit. My wife has some sort of heat thing that should work.

Two swords in the stone? I know Im crazy trying to make a hand, its just that I dont want to cut up the sword and hand in case I change my mind and use it instead of my new sword.

A demon in skirts? Oh yeah! Not sure if I like em. One hangin in front and one back. Practise makes perfect I guess...

Any and all c&c is much appreciated!!!

Im also working a bit on my color scheme. I NEED HELP! Its hard since Ive never painted an army before... any suggestions??? Im trying to find info on noise marines and what colors would be suitable. So far Ive only found a couple of pages on GWs site:

Emperors Children. A little fluff, but not much.

Modeling and Painting Guide for the God of Slaanesh. It only shows pink, leather, fur and studs. What else suits my noisy army?

Emperors Children of Slaanesh. A step by step guide to painting the noise champion. Im not gonna have a champ so...

So, any links or images that can help me out in coming up with a slaaneshy color scheme? Ive got lots of ideas for the modeling. Not sure if my modeling ideas suits slaanesh though. I want a demonic army at various stages of mutating and evolving. My noise marines and termies will be decorated with bits from the possesed box. Also some extra wires and tubes feeding them with their drugs during battle. Some screaming shoulder pads etc. Would that work?

But for colors Im kinda lost, cuz I dont want pink. Maybe a bit of pink. Im thinking purple, light blue and orange. Black as base and bit dark, rusty and dirty metal.

Any and all help is VERY welcome! *HUGE smile*

Thanks Death by Monkeys and open_sketchbook! *grins*

Ive been googling to find out more about slaanesh. From what Ive read it fits perfect to do the kind of mutated demonic army that Im doing. Ive seen quite a few pics of different slaanesh figs and Im thinking about going with a black prime armour with purple and turqouse (sp?). Probably green on power weapons. Some gold to sparkle it up a bit. Maybe some orange too somewhere. Have experimented with some colors on bits of sprues.

I like the purple on the left and the turq-whatever to the right of it. Not sure which green to pick...

Will do some more experiments with the sprues, testing colors and washes.

Other than that Ive only done a little work on the wings. An experiment that turned out pretty ok. Not done with the left wing yet.

Used my wifes heat gun thingie. Its called "Embossing Heat Tool Model 2500 Marvy Uchida". Hooked it up to my desk with the vise so I could use both hands shaping the plastic. A kitchen mitten and a metal spoon came in handy. That heat tool really does the job! The plastic wings got so hot it was no probs to bend it into any shape.

Having this tool that lets me melt plastic has given me lots of other ideas Id like to try.... Will have to wait though. Must finish the prince!

Thats all for today. Thought Id just through in a shot of the new head to give you an idea of the size.

Hope you like! Any and all comments and suggestions is much appreciated!

Awesome conversion work

As far as painting goes, Slaanesh worshippers favour pastel shades (which all tend to go well with black). If you want some more exotic ideas, try and find a copy of 'Realm of Chaos - Slaves to Darkness'. Or more to the point, find someone with a copy and look at it. I shudder to think how much it would cost you to try and buy one!!

The old 'eavy metal' work on slaanesh was much more varied than it is today (which is all pink/purple/black) so you should get some good ideas.

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Here's the REAL question...

Is that mold carved out of a piece of drywall?

Well Eric. Not sure what drywall is. Id call it plasterboard. Im not a native speaker, but plasterboard would reflect what we call it in swedish. Plaster between two thickish papers. Cut with a knife through the paper and then break the board to get the right size. And yes, its used to build walls. We added two walls when we moved into our appartment (more room for the kids) and I have some pieces of the stuff left over. Great stuff to make simple molds like the logo. For smaller more detailed stuff, wont work.

Yep.
Here in the states we call it Drywall.
Some people refer to it as Sheetrock, but that is a brand name of Drywall.

That's a good idea.

It's inexpensive, especially if you're using scraps, it will hold rudimentary shaped fairly well, it is resistant to the heat of the molten metal and, if anything goes wrong, just throw it away and carve another one.

Genius!

I'm nearing the end stages of completing about half of my basement (turning it into a gaming room & miniatures work room) and have some scraps left... I think I'll have to hold on to them, now.

Do that. Its good fun to sit and carve. Piece of advice. Draw an image on paper of how you want the mold to look. Then give it some thought where you want to pour in the pewter. Then you can go ahead and add the image to the drywall and start carving. And use something sharp like a hobby knife to get through the paper and to cut out general shape. Then use whatever youve got to scrape out plaster. Ive used GWs sculpting tool, small screwdrivers and other tools I dont know the english name for

Good luck!

I know Im gonna need it with all my crazy plans for my 20 termies and 12+ noise marines...

Thanks for the url Lycanthrope! Ive bookmarked it and using it frequently. And thanks everyone else for helping me out with how to paint purple skin and paint separate pieces.

So. Time for a small update! I thought Id take a small break from the DP and start putting some other figs together. First though, I thought Id quickly clean up all the mold lines. Its takin FOREVER! I HATE MOLD LINES! Not done yet... *sigh*

Anyway. Nuff whining. Heres some of the recent progress.

Done a little more work on the head. Also some more after this photo was taken so I think Im done now! The tips of the horn will be metal reinforcements painted gold. Horns will be darkish grey (I think) and skin pale purple (again, I think). Deciding on colors aint easy... Have been doing some practice painting on pieces of sprue. Blending is hard!

Wings done. Bent some more and added horn growths similair to that on the right arm of the DP.

Ive also done some more on the sword (only one side left to add runes and thickness) and a couple of other tongues in different lengths. We shall see which one I end up using...

Also tried my hand at scratching a sonic blaster. I will need to make 11. This is just the main body of the gun without all the details (wires etc). I realize that itll probably be quicker if I make a mold so that should happen soonish. Probably a couple of molds. I dont want all the blasters to be identical.

After some work on the head and sword I had a few pieces of putty left so I did some details. Ill clean these up once its hard (cut and sand some) and add lips to the face on the termie leg.

Only happy to be of use here

Anyways, those new pics look great. I think you've really gotten the wings into a good shape.
I thought a bit about the head though, and, not meaning to rattle your cage here, I think it'd be cool if you put some vampire-esque fangs on it and gave it a semi-longish pointed tongue. I mean, vampires and Slaanesh really are like peas in a pod; they both deal in seduction and pleasure with a touch of their own malice. Wonder why Slaaneshi daemons don't have more vampirical traits?

I just believe that it's potentially awesome, but don't mind my ramblings unless you feel obliged to

I like your idea Lycanthrope! Its just that fangs and teeth are a bit beyond my skills. Have tried and I cant do em, yet. Have added the tongue and its got a pointy end Great minds think alike! Might have another go at making fangs...

Took a break from the DP tonight and entertained myself with some mold line scrapin! Gave that up pretty quick and did a quick sketch of some thoughts on scratch building oblits. Ive got three of GWs models and I like em. Just cant afford buying as many as I think Ill need. And Im not a fan of the chaos spawn fig so Im not gonna do a mod on them like a lot of people do.

Heres some thoughts. Inspired by the leg plates on the knight that Xanthos is building here.

Sorry for the messy sketch but I just wanted to get my ideas on paper quick. The one on the left is looking more like an ordinary oblits but with the plasticard shin guards like Xanthos knight. The one on the right got huge shoulderpads with some guns on top and instead of the organ pipes on the back hes got some big speakers. Since hes got weapons on the shoulders/neck, he can have a massive claw!

Cool sketches. I'd like to see some slaaneshi oblits!
And a pointy tongue for the DP! Great minds think alike indeed As for the fangs, how did you attempt to create them? I'd go for rolling a little dud of GS under my finger so that it had one thin end and one thick. The only problem I can see with that is that you'll need a good few attempts and just enough GS for the job, or the fangs would probably come out too short or too long. Perhaps easier said than done but that's how I'd do it anyway
Good luck with that m8

Chaos jump packs work really well as "Noise Marine Speakers" if you just mount one side of them in any location, most likely a shoulder, and attatch wires and such to them.

Also, I like a blended/faded dark blue to purple with touches of black for my Noise Marines. But that's just a matter of personal taste.

Try a wet palette for blending. Basically, mix all of your paints on a slightly (just slightly) damp bit of paper towel or toilet paper. This will give you just about the perfect consistancy of paint to let your other layers show through and not appear to "streak. Try working your way up from a darker color with a brushload of lighter paint at a time, painting gradually lighter areas of the model (A flat surface like a sprue edge will look strange trying this technique; a model is always better for shading. Get one from a friend or just buy a cheapie metal one, and use it to test all of your schemes). I don't have time to get into a big tutorial, but that should be at least sufficient.

Nice conversions, by the way.

Ive just bought a small pair of tweezers so I might do another attempt at teeth. Yes, rolling like that is what Ive done. Instead of trying to add the fang to the mouth before its dried, Ill let it dry this time and then glue it in using my new tweezers Might work! That way, if the fang ends up too long I can just cut it to the right size before gluing.

And back to the slaanesh-vampire topic. I find the new daemonettes to have a bit of a vampire look to their faces. Dont ya think? Anywho. Guess what? Im gonna have some female slaaneshi noise marines *evil grin* And maybe there will one day be a Daemon Princess

Finally time for an update!

The modelling on the DP is 90%ish done. Some work on the shoulders, neck and skirt. Ive primed the pieces so painting can start once Ive mustered up the courage (and have figured out exactly how I want it to look).

And since the DP is this far gone, I thought Id go back and give the old warhound some love. All the pieces for the legs and hips (except armour on em) have been done for weeks just waiting to be put together. And that was some work! Since I wanted to add a punch of long pins to strengthen the joints.

And the hip from behind.

Now Im waiting for a big order of plasticard to arrive so I can fix up the hipjoint before gluing the legs to the hip. Then begins the tricky business of doing templates for a chaos warhound torso...

More to come!

Ok, so another small update. The sonic blaster is bein finished. Did some more work on it tonight and will start painting it partially before gluing it on.

My wife asked if I had made a Wolverine, pointing on the long thin blue wires. I explained that it was wires coming out of the back of his hand at that those wires were getting clipped down and GSed into the back of the gun. And there will be a couple of more wires.
