Privateer Press™ not to renew the Gale Force Nine™ accessories license.

Monday, 06/30/08 [ General | Posted by: john ]

To our disappointment, Privateer Press has chosen not to renew the Warmachine and Hordes accessories license with GF9 in favor of producing their own range of gaming aids. (See “Privateer Press, Inc. announces new gaming tokens for WARMACHINE and HORDES”, May 23, 2008, www.privateerpress.com!).

This announcement will affect all Privateer Press™ licensed products including branded tokens, templates, terrain and dice tins for both Warmachine™ and Hordes™. The tokens, templates and dice tins will be available for direct sale through July 26th, 2008. Terrain sets will be available through September 16th, 2008. After this sell-through period, the tokens, templates and dice tins will no longer be available direct from GF9.

We have enjoyed creating the most successful range of branded accessories for Privateer Press games in the industry. We would like to thank Privateer Press for the opportunity to show the world how good gaming accessories can be and the many fans that made our accessories the standard by which all others are judged.

GF9 – Game ON!

So, if you've been eyeing that faction specific token pack, now is the time to buy it.

Wow. I'm surprised at this. Especially after GF9 put out those terrain pieces...

I had heard this about a month ago. I'm not surprised, the characteristic that seems to define Privateer is arrogance. I'm sure they think they can do it better and faster and cheaper than GF9. And if they're anything like the junk they put out for Hordes, they'll lose money on it. Matt Wilson and company put out a good game, but seem to be incredibly arrogant.

I don't understand PP branching into gaming aids. Tokens and templates and paints, I can see. Pin vices and etc, I don't get. It's moves like this that cause companies to get overextended, cause them to lose money on a side venture, and cause them to go under. I'm not saying that I know PP will do that, but I think it's a possibility.

Exactly. Why try and fix what isn't broken? GF9 is well respected for putting out quality products. Concentrate on what makes you money, and farm out the rest to those that can do that side work for you. It's better for all involved.

PP is going to lose a lot of goodwill over this.

If PP are making new markers in the same format as the old Hordes ones then this is bad news for everyone (GF9, PP and the consumer). If PP produce some good quality, well designed markers then this is good news.

Will PP realise they made a mistake with the old markers and learn from their mistake? I hope so.

I think they'll improve the tokens from the Hordes fiasco. Wilson is arrogant, but not stupid.

What I don't understand, is why they want to take on a venture (tokens or hobby supplies), instead going to someone who makes those items (say, GF9), and just saying, "hey, can slap my logo on this stuff, then give me a nickel/dime/quarter/etc for each one you sell?" It's no risk for you, and it generates income.

I've heard that PP are redesigning the tokens for Hordes and these new tokens are then also made for WM.

It's obvious that they think they'll make more money when making the tokens by them selves than by licensing the making to third party.

This makes me sad as the GF9 tokens are really nice, just have to buy some missing sets now that they are still available.
