First, an objective marker

Another objective marker in progress. The border will be striped yellow and black, the middle will be painted like diamond plate, and the two pieces in the middle will be gun metal with rivets.

The inspiration for the second is this:

Lastly, I'm working on a refinery piece. Here's a mock up

The tanks will be sprayed rust brown primer and the pipes will be rusty gun metal. I'll put a ladder up both towers, one on each side and the whole thing will be mounted on a piece of MDF. I've cut out some foil from a bottle of wine to use as patches on the tanks and some liquitex paynes grey leaking out from one of the patches will make a nice oil leak. Naturally, I have to join all of the pieces, putty the joins, and file down all of the moulded letters on the piping.

Nice, a control point from TF2.

If you made a few more of those and then placed them on some kind of interior or industrial gameboard then that would probably be the most awesome thing ever.

I've thought about converting some of my favorite multiplayer FPS maps in to 40K boards.

I still want to start with something small from Halo...

Games are definitely awesome inspiration for terrain.

A great start here iffy.

I'd suggest putting your tanks on a base to help keep it all together.

Do you have any research photos for your tanks yet?

I will be putting the tanks on a base of MDF. I have an idea of what I want them to look like. I used to map for games, but will be tracking down some photos once I get the pieces cleaned up. I also used to live next to a refinery

I love seeing what folks use for inspiration. Anything you might be able to share while you get to painting would be great.

Speaking of which...I need to do some inspiration searching for my DPC entry.....

Off topic, but look at Iffy playing scout on gravel pit!

Post your handle in the OT forum and we'll catch a game or two. Back on topic, I love the idea of playing a game for control point objective markers, keep it up!

Painting diamond plate should be fun, but you can get textured card from various places, might save you some time. In any event, I'm looking forward to seeing where you take these.

I actually couldn't find a diamond plate pattern. The closest I could get was an interlocking brick pattern, which is close enough.

More progress

The capture point primed black, drybrushed with VMC Gunmetal and then the plate is washed with Devlan Mud and then some Bestial Brown and Blazing Orange is applied to the edges

I used some tape I got from the local RC store to mask off the areas that were going to be painted with the yellow stripes

One coat of Dheneb Stone followed by a coat of Golden Yellow

And the tape comes off. I was really happy with the result.

Enough work for this morning. Time to go to the parade.

Ah...very nice black/yellow striping. No problems peeling off the black paint with the masking tape?

I was a little concerned that the black primer might peel off, but what you see if the result after pulling off the tape, no touch up what so ever. It worked out much better than I expected.

I think I'm finished with this. I edged the yellow with a little bit of white and the black with some basalt grey. I blended some red -> orange -> yellow -> white for the middle of the capture point and then did the lettering. Thought it turned out ok.

Looks really good! The idea to build terrain inspired by FPS maps could probably lead to very interesting games. I guess it would be difficult (if not impossible) to move troops if the terrain is too similair with the FPS map though. Too many tunnels and stairs etc.

How big is that capture point?

2 1/2 inches on each side. The piece in the middle is a round shield glued to a small flying base.

That's great! Glad to see the terrain bug has infected another brother ^_^

Are you going to add any more details to the refinery piece, such as lines, rivets, valves, and flanges?

One day I will make a Spy Caddilus, a Heavy Weapons Guy, a Medic, a Sniper Vindicare, a demoman Grenade launcher and a scout Neophyte. Engineer Techpriests will consturct huge Sentry-Titans, which, when destroyed, will result in me saying "Spy sappin' mah sentry!". Soldiers will not be included because my oppenent will moan about the constant crit rockets, however Pyros will be shown doing their Axe taunt.

Thank you and good day.

Yes. hopefully, I'll get another concept shot up today. I cut and bevelled the base, the tanks are joined as are the connecting pipes. I'm making some ladders that will go up the sides of the tanks and will make a catwalk spanning the two. I probably need to roll 2 rectangles of greenstuff to make the connection points between the tanks and the pipes.

Anyone have good ideas about how to cut the lines into PVC?

Cut and bevelled a base for the piece. Might cut it down a bit since it's footprint is a pretty good size. Made 2 ladders (one is shown). The other one will go on the other side of storage tank 2. There is a small set of stairs up to the top of the pipes and I will make a catwalk to connect storage tank #1 and 2. I've spent a fair amount of time filling the gaps between the bottom and tops of the tanks. I think my next step is to run down to the hobby store and pick up some thin strip so that I can make bands for my tanks instead of scribing lines.

Here's the back view

I'll also make 2 plates out of greenstuff to connect the tanks to the pipes, but probably won't glue everything together unil everything is primed, since the pipes, ladders, catwalk get primed a different color than the tanks.

Added my bands and a ton of rivets. Finished the second ladder, both of which are just blue-tac'd on (that's why they're a little lopsided). The top is the start of my catwalk, which will be supported by 2 I-beams and have some hand rails. Fits a 25mm base nicely, no terminators allowed.
