There is a discussion going on about whether England should have a national day.

Two proposals are April 23 and November 5. I prefer Nov 5 as otherwise we have no bank holidays between late August and Christmas, while we already have about four clustered in mid-March to mid-May.

November 5th IS a national holiday for you! Hell, it's a good enough holiday that I celebrate it here in the States as well!

We don't get a day off work though.

And no reason why the US should not celebrate -- it is part of your history too, after all.

You are correct. The official term is "Independence Day" aka "The 4th of July" which is, of course, the date in 1776 that the colonies declared their independence from Great Britain.

ah, independence day
(4th of july, america day, whatever)is amazing.

Explosives and firebombs = fun.
(the so called firebomb is the equivilent of throwing water on a LARGE bucket of boiling wax and watching it create a fireball 10ft into the air and 5ft in diameter).
bottle rocket throwing contests (light wait 5 seconds and throw)

Safety procautions were (usually) observed in the lighting of all fires and explosions.

May I ask the significance of those two days? I should probably know but I don't.

god having a holiday on shakespeares birthday would suck, it would just reinforce the stereotypes yanks have about us.

You know, just this weekend I was asking my wife (who spent two years living in Wales) if the UK had an analogous holiday to Independence Day. We pondered on whether Scotland, Wales, and Ireland had Independence Days or if they just had "We Pretend to Be Separate Nations, though England Won't Let Us" Days. We figured that what with the fire and explosions and stuff that the Queen's Birthdays and Guy Fawkes Day are probably as close as it gets...

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack

scotland and ireland are seperate nations, they are still part of the uk though cos they are very small for a country (so all of the countries in the uk just join up for legal purposes). wales is part of england due to the fact it is a principality (hence having a prince of wales).

oh and if any americans get cocky about england, who's language are you typing in

I think there are some Welsh Independence Movement activists out there that would probably debate you on that one, though I'm not one of them.

Heh. Considering the evolution of English, particular the ways it has evolved on the web just over the last 10 years, I think Billy Shakespeare might have a challenge deciphering today's English. All due respect to him, I think he'd figure it out, but it's come a long way.

And now I can't get the damn Bare Naked Ladies song about "Aluminum" and its different pronunciations out of my head. Damn you, Russ!

Scotland has Burns Night and New Year's Eve. (I don't think Burns Night is a bank holiday. Northern Ireland has one or two more bank holidays then England and Wales.

Eire of course is a separate nation and has its own holidays.

As far as I'm concerned Wales is welcome to a national day as long as England gets one as well.

I mean, it's been awhile, but England has won and lost its independence a couple times back in ye olden days, right? So which Independence Day do you celebrate? Independence from the Romans after their fall? From the Danes in 1042?

I don't think England needs an Independence Day, it's over 900 years since the last successful invasion (William the Conqueror) and that ended with the invaders being assimilated. I just want more holidays.

Just do like us and celebrate everybody else's holidays. Cinqo de Mayo and St. Patrick's Day, anybody? Surprised we don't do Guy Fawkes Day, too, since it seems to involve blowing up . We really enjoy the blowing up of .

Quick note, while April 23rd may or may not be Shakespeare's birthday (google and find out) it's rathe rmore significantly St. George's Day. You know St. George? Dragon Slayer? Patron Saint of England (& Turkey & Moldova also I think)
