I have not picked up the book yet, but the Menoth models seem pretty neat. Before I start dropping money, how does that army play?

For what it is worth, I play Sisters of Battle in 40k, so the expression, "Kill it with fire!" makes me glee with joy.

Thanks!

See here for some pretty good advice, especially for starting out.

My experience is that PoM are going to be more infantry horde-y than warjack-y, though not necessarily. Before you start dropping cash, borrow a friend's army and/or play a few battlebox games to make sure you want to make the investment...

Have fun and report back!

Well, I got my hands on a copy of the prime rule book and those Knight Exemplars look pretty badass. The knight models in general looks pretty sweet. Is it viable to do a knight focused theme?

I'm actually doing a knight-themed army right now, and I love it. It's not as easy to win as something stupid and cheesy like Drop-and-Pop with Kreoss and a Redeemer, but it's fun. I do use Kreoss, but I avoid the more automatic win type choices. I'm also avoiding the common "uber" units like Idrian Skirmishers and Zealots.

I love the seneschals, and the paladins, and they support the knights really well.

Notes on the Protectorate:

You must be willing to kill your own troops, or encourage your opponent to kill them for you. Much of your synergy will depend on your own stuff croaking.

Your light Warjacks are fantastic. I rarely see the heavies, but the lights are always in use. They are relatively cheap and have great special abilities.

Fire is pretty cool, especially against Hordes (usually higher DEF and lower ARM than Warmachine). However, there is a 33% chance that it will expire before dealing any damage, and then you still have to roll the damage and you are not able to boost it. It's cool, but not something to base your entire strategy around.

What lights do you see besides devouts and revengers? Redeemers only really come with Kreoss no? Maybe Severius...

I see Devouts and Revengers all the time of course. They are both fantastic.
I also see Redeemers with Kreoss, Severius, and Reznik. All of them can help the rocket hit.

Of course, the rocket doesn't have to hit to do damage. Circle probably feels this more than many factions, because we live or die on our DEF. Scatter a rocket into most of our units and they will die.

You also see the Redeemer bonded to eFeora, and it goes with his initial
impression that he wants to kill things with fire.

So upon futher reading, I am very much leaning towards Reznik as my Warcaster. How many jacks should Reznik be taking? I am thinking 2 since his base focus is only 6(I will be taking at least 2 wracks to help). One will be a Revenger to help cast spells, but sure on the other however. Any suggestions for Menoth jacks?

Revenger and Devout seem like pretty 'stock' choices, though the Battle College also recommends the Guardian.

Seems you'll want a choir and a vassal as well, to give those jacks some oomph.

"Witch Hound" (ability) "Brand of Heresy" and "Zealot's Rage" (spells) would suggest you'd want more than two, probably three, with one of 'em being a biggie. I like the idea of the Revenger, Devout and Guardian combo, actually (though if you don't care about the 2nd arc node, a Crusader will get you by). Revenger allows for some early game spellcasting while Reznik and Devout move up. Brand of Heresy and Zealot's rage on the big guy, pop feat and let 'er rip.

If you did:
Reznik
Guardian
Revenger
Devout
Choir Max
3 Wracks (and don't forget, he can make more!)
Vassal

You're at 397. Plenty of points left over to get in an infantry unit of choice (Exemplars Errant? Daughters? Zealots? Temple Flameguard + UA? Really not sure what'd be good with him. Something relatively fast and whompy, unless you want to piss off your opponent with a horde of deliverers for your alpha strike...).

Speaking of Reznik's ability of creating Wracks, has anyone tried to place the Wrack next to a group of enemies then draw focus off of it to try to cause it to explode? It seems crazy, but....

its all about how you play, i have a menoth army that i bought simply on the looks....bad choice. Menoth is the most diverse of all the armies in the game, in my opinion. You want to light stuff on fire, Temple flame guards, zealots with a bearer attachment and feora as your caster. castigator has fire fists and a cumbustion attack to get some flames burning. If you want to go heavy on the warjacks just make sure to get the choir, the armies only true auto include. Just be aware, menoth has VERY LITTLE RANGE. feilding a redeemer is handy, and if your looking to get a few little points in, the sunburst crew, while highly unaccurate, will help. I'm still new to the game but i found the site

http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/Protectorate

to be my absolute savior.
oh and buy the pack of cards before you start buying stuff, then you can read and understand what they do and the points value of each, highly worth the 11.99

Reading is almost never enough to catch me up. I have to
actually play with or against armies to get a sense for what
works.
