I've got those stacked up for when I finish the novels, glad to hear they rock.
My vote for favorite comic series goes to The Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon.

They troubled me. I loved the artwork, but the writing
wasn't King. It very much sounded like someone trying
to sound like King, and King isn't the most musical writer
out there, but I usually fell for it with the Tower and any
of his regular Joe voices.
So yeah, I'm iffy on the Dark Tower.
I'll post a suggestion that's timely. Wanted was a great read.

I vote Transmetropolitan for best comic series. Scary how applicable it continues to be. Otherwise Top Ten, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Preacher, New X-Men (or up to where I stopped reading it) are all superb. I also love Mahnke & Nguyen's run on JLA, beautiful art with the highest-powered of teams - in a similar vein I really enjoyed Justice League Elite too. Hellspawn is also way up there in the art department for me as well. - Salvage

I'm torn between Transmetropolitan and Preacher, Boss. I
think Preacher was more pivotal but Transmetropolitan gets
points for being current. Preacher is more of a heroic myth
type story, the kind Ennis seems to love writing in his war
books. While Spider Jerusalem is supposed to cut a heroic
figure in his own right, he's no John Wayne inspired priest.

Pretty much anyhting by Grant Morrison. Loved his run on Doom Patrol and he also gave us the Justice League we've always deserved, almost as good as the one I used to dream about joining when I was a bairn.
I'd recommend picking up The Filth if you ever get the chance, also we 3 is ace.
Best thing ever released though ? Much as I love Watchmen, Moore's run on Swamp Thing and the usual subjects rolled out here I'd always go for Zenith which was mind blowingly good and years ahead of its time.
There's an ace fansite about the series here
.. and a general plea : In the unlikely event anyone here ever has or sees volumes 2+ of this and are insane enough not to want to sell it for serious moolah on ebay etc I'll gladly take them off of you !

We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I really like the Image series of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Also, Marvel stuff like Uncanny X-Men, X-Force, Ghost Rider, Iron Man, the Punisher, etc. X-Men is probably my overall favorite.
The only D.C. comic I really ever liked was Lobo (surprise!)
Although I may try to pick up the Killing Joke at some point, it looks pretty good.

The original Ghost in the Shell is my favorite.
Spawn and The Darkness were also pretty good back in the day. I couldn't tell you how they are now though.
V for Vendetta will always stand out.
As for Webcomics: VGCats, MegaTokyo, and Garfield minus Garfield are all regular reads for me.

Whedon is recooked Claremont. Even when writing Buffy, he was reheating Claremont angst. He is really good at it, though.
malfred wrote:I'll post a suggestion that's timely. Wanted was a great read.
Wanted was a goat-blowing monstrosity. Well, not that bad. But Millar writes everything for boys in the early stages of puberty. And his stories never end as strongly as they start. Way more ideas than execution.

Agree on Morrison's JLA run in the mid-to-late 90's. I bought those new back in the day, and you knew they were something special from the first issue. Regarding Alan Moore, they aren't cheap, but his work on Miracleman 1-16 is fricking exceptional. Alan Moore is the single most creative force in comics ever, from a story standpoint. He's the Kirby of writers. Watchmen (movie by Zack Snyder of 300 fame) is getting a trailer with TDK, and it's going to blow up in the mainstream as well.
Hordini wrote:Although I may try to pick up the Killing Joke at some point, it looks pretty good.
Speaking of Moore, his work in TKJ is only decent. The Bolland art is incredible though. Still one of the most beautiful comics ever.
For my money, I have a list:
Hellboy, most completely in a single comic titled The Corpse. But most of the stuff is exceptional. Preferably with Mignola's art.
But my favorite storyline ever is Daredevil: Born Again. Miller has become a joke, but this seminal run on DD in the 80's is incredible writing. In a one year span, Miller wrote Year One, The Dark Knight Returns, and Born Again. Anyways, I love the other two, but Born Again is my go-to. Very pulpy, very primal. Love it.

For story and 'easter eggs' dropped in to pick up on on later reads it would have to be Watchmen. Too young to read it first time around I bought the trade paperback earlier in the year and was blown away by it.
The X-Men will always have a place in my heart as it was the first real collecting I did, but after I stopped they seemed very hit and miss with the art.
Early Spawn rocked, but after 25 odd issues nothing ever happened.

Yeah, agreed on Mark Millar. But what else are you going to do with the men
in tights genre? The very idea of it has to do with puberty. If you want a
monstrosity, then read his Unfunnies. On second thought, don't.
Not every superhero book can be maddeningly funny AND cynical like The Boys.
Or sombre like The Watchmen.
Anyway, it was timely, and I was entertained by it more than I ever was by
some of the drek that Marvel and DC puts out.

Hrmn. This is tough.
In no particular order, this would be my top Graphic Novels:
Maus
"X-Men God Loves Man Kills"
Iron Man Crash (first computer generated comic evar!)
Kabuki "Circle of Blood"
Hellraiser "All His Engines"
As for series/limited run series:
the Usagi Yojimbo series
Alan Moore's V For Vendetta and the first two League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
The Metabaron series
Green Arrow Quiver storyline (by Kevin Smith)
Alan Ross' Kingdom Come
And for web comics: Goats, Questionable Content, Girl Genius, and anything by Jeffery Rowland.
I really wanted to like "The Path" and the rest of the Crossgen stuff, but they clearly were trying to stretch out 10 issue stories into 40 or 50 issues, and that just doesn't work.
And I'm really into the Luna Bros' "Sword" right now.

Oh man! Can I put The Dark Knight Returns into my favorites list? With the sequel in the Tentative Favorites list, as I dug the crap out of that as well (though I think it wasn't as well received with the audience at large). malfred wrote:Not every superhero book can be maddeningly funny AND cynical like The Boys.
Which reminds me that I still need to read that one. Though The Authority was thoroughly enjoyable IMO, in a similar vein. With all the X-Men talk, apart from New X-Men I most enjoy the runs by Chris Bachalo, old and new. Same goes for Generation X, though I was actually of a relatably age when those were coming out :S ... For the record we're talking about great art to enhance the fun / spectacle, not necessarily the writing. Might as well put Bachalo's Steampunk up in here too. Even with its massive cliffhanger before cancellation - Salvage

The Alpha and the Omega is The Dark Phoenix Saga (129-137). He wrote it from UXM 94/Giant-Size #1 around 1975 through 1992 (In the mid to late 200s). Days of Future Past (141-142) is pretty legendary. It wasn't any particular issue or story...just consistent (brow-beating) themes, and a general tone. I did love his Uncanny X-Men/Alpha Flight mini-series (#1 and #2). And speaking of...
For art (speaking of the Gumby specials), The Asgardian Wars (those XM/ AF issues, plus the New Mutants Special #1 and Uncanny X-Men Annual #9 (art by Art Adams) are frigging great reads.
