Painlord Titan Princeps of Slaanesh

Dallas, TX

Played a pick up game at the local GW today against a guy with a tyranid army. I've never had to hold back so much with so little before and DO it successfully like I did today, but it was a great game!

3 obliterators
vindicator, daemonic possession, havoc launcher
defiler, autocannon and extra ccw.

He got the first turn, and advanced cautiously [rolled a 1 for most units' run rolls]. Some shooting took out about half of the on-foot noisemarine squad. The genestealers had infiltrated behind some ruins, and were advancing through them.

My turn 1: Moved the rhino with the CSM to the side of the stealers and the rhino with Noisemarines in front of them. All rapid-fired and wiped out every genestealer, leaving the broodlord. All my other shooting accounted for maybe 4 gaunts total, as that's all the cover saves that he failed.

His turn 2: Broodlord charges CSM, they break away but run only 3 inches. Hive tyrant and lictor charge vindicator and blow it up. Shooting accounts for a few more marines. Hormagaunts and crushing claws carnifex charge a rhino, shake it.

My turn 2: daemon prince and defiler charge into hive tyrant, footslogging noisemarines target crushing claw carnifex, and their doomsiren template covers all of the hormagaunts in the way as well. Shooting ineffective against the carnifex. charged it as well, lost the squad down to the champion. Noisemarines from rhino load up and book it. CSM run off the board, rhino tank shocks the broodlord unsuccessfully. My shooting wipes out the hormagaunts at my lines while obliterators deepstrike near his objective, wiping out all of the hormagaunts sitting back to defend it with flamers and wounding a tyranid warrior. My prince fails to hurt the hive tyrant, who blows up the defiler. Daemons appear and charge a zoanthrope and carnifex, wounding the zoanthrope once.

His turn 3: Hormagaunts charge the daemons, wiping them all out [no saves made in 13 dice...]. Another carnifex charges the daemon prince, who wounds it a couple times before the hive tyrant wounds him and the carnifex drags him down [1 out of 7 saves passed]. The broodlord assaults the final member of the noisemarines that charged the carnifex to finish him off, but leaves himself in front of my guns. The hive tyrant consolidates towards the center, while the carnifexes consolidate towards my firebase of the two 5-man noisemarine squads on my objective. The previous lictor charges one of the noisemarine squads and then is killed, while the other charges the obliterators, kills one [more invul saves failed], then hits and runs back into the woods.

My turn 3: Second squad of daemons show up and assault the hive tyrant to occupy it. Obliterators wipe out the tyranid warriors with flamers and charging them, consolidating away. THeir flamers had caught the lictor in their templates, so it was taken care of as well. The marines fight on in the center versus two zoanthropes and a carnifex, finally killing both zoanthropes but having trouble with the behemoth. The hive tyrant fairs poorly, and kills only 1 daemon, with 1 more dying to no retreat. The broodlord goes down to shooting from my firebase.

His turn 4: The other two carnifexes advance on my firebase, ready to try to assault but are just out of range. The combat between the other carnifex [shooty one] and my noisemarines rages on, while the hive tyrant finds he can only kill one more daemon, with one dying to no retreat.

My turn 4: The firebase noisemarines load up in the empty rhinos, safe for the moment against the raging carnifexes and still on the objective. He's lost all his scoring units, but it's up to my noisemarine squads to try to hold either my home base objective by killing the advancing 'fexes, or by killing the shooty one and running away before the hive tyrant gets to them. He proves unable to kill the daemons at all, who still fail to damage the tyrant. My obliterators advance through the woods and shoot at the furthest carnifex [two scything talons]. It goes down to one wound, but is still standing.

His turn 5: The hive tyrant still can't kill anymore daemons, while the shooty fex kills one marine a turn. The other fexes charge one of the rhinos, but only shake it. The other zoanthrope wanders about with nothing to shoot.

My turn 5: The noisemarines against the shooty fex fail to bring it down, even with the help of the charging obliterators. The hive tyrant finally kills the daemons and consolidates closer - it'll be over for those noisemarines, they took too long. At the other objective, realizing it's lost for now, the rhino-borne marines zip off, firing from inside their transports - there's a chance, if I can kill both of those carnifexes through sheer luck, to load up again next turn and seize the objective. Assault mode blastmasters drop the scything talon fex, but the crushing claws fex is still at 4 out of 5 wounds, and on this turn the game ended.

Result: Draw. No objectives controlled uncontested.

That hive tyrant was a thorn in my side the entire game. When my prince and defiler utterly failed me, I didn't have much else that could deal with it. My army severely lacks 2+ armour punch. I normally have been taking terminators, but today I'd forgotten the box. Still, having 7 scoring units on the board gave my opponent a bit of a sweat towards the end, when he realized he had lost all of his and frantically tried to remove all of mine. When my rhino-borne noisemarine squad disembarked and went after his last hormagaunt squad and assaulted them and the two zoanthropes, I think that was my biggest blunder. Not thinking the daemons would hold off the tyrant for so long, I was playing for the draw in trying to wipe out the last of his gaunts. Going for the objective, and letting the obliterators charge out in front to hurt the carnifex, then finish it off in melee would probably have earned me a victory - but again, who expects 6 lesser daemons to hold up a hive tyrant for 3 whole turns?

A challenging, nail-biting game. I loved it!
