Well while the noise marines obviously are the first thing that crosses the empty vat of space surrounded by my eyes ears and other sensory organs. I ( a piano player) have often wondered what kind if music the agnsty teans of the empire, orkish realms, eldar craftworld, and necron crypts listen to. I imagine that after a rebelliously short 18 hours at church, the teens listen to some form of heavy/ death/ metal. loud enough to drown out the sound of lasguns and heavy ordinance, but just quiet enough to hear an incoming shell and take cover. The orks probably also listen to heavy metal... the screaming soothes them.
But what other music would the races of the 40k galaxy enjoy? I have no idea do you?

Follow the word of the Turtle Pie. Bathe your soul in its holy warmth and partake in its delicious redemption. Let not the temptation of Lesser desserts divert you, for All is Pie, and Turtle is All
97% of people have useless and blatantly false statistics in their sigs, if you are one of the 8% who doesn't, paste this in your sig to show just what a rebel you are
In the Eisenhorn books it was said that the mutants listened to aggressive music called pound, which I imagine as being something like Nile or Hate Eternal, or possibly Debauchery, on a really good night. The Space Marines would listen to chant mania while the Eldar and Tau most likely listen to progressive smooth jazz.

That always seemed to fit the Space Marines.
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
yup.. I have to agree with Mr. cheese elemental on the music pick for the space marines.... but I'm noticing that there seems to be somewhat of a metal theme going on here

Definitely metal... anyone else think this for the IG?

I would imagine that there is nothing like the "music" we have today in the WH40K setting, I can imagine the Upper echelons of 40K society having more a direct sensory stimulation that would fill the void left by the removal of music. Or at best poetry readings or High Gothic opera.
Space Marines would be in meditation, or chanting like monastic monks. Same as the Sororitas and other special troop detachments, Stormtroopers etc.
Mechanicus no music what so ever.
IG would probably only have access to Imperial Hymnals or hastily made instruments with which to create the most basic of folk music, but with the commisars and their watchful eye, I'd imagine you'd have more the chain gang music as sung by those US deep southern jail inmates as they go work the road.
Orks, I'd guess would rejoice to very deep resonant tribal sounds, perhaps something like African tribal music. I could also imagine Orks simply getting off on the tortured screams of their captive slaves....
Eldar, ahh a difficult one. Considering their mental make-up, I'd imagine Eldar would be entertained by the whispering of the stars. A musical note that resonates through everything, a constant rythm of life and growth. I would imagine the actual playing of an instrument to be a bit primative for Eldar, and any gathering would be silent if witnessed by human ears.
Dark Eldar....somthing similar to Orks. I can imagine their music to have a distinctively sexual feel to it, no I don't mean like 70s porn, I'm thinking they definatly use instruments and generate a very saxophonic type listing sound, perhaps a bit morbid, and definately haunting melodies.
Tau, being a young race could swing anywhere between tribal sounds like the Orks and possibly the Dark Eldar, but could also be into a very sophisticated sound like High Imperial society. Given their fundamental ideals, anything like modern music filled with its political and social undertones is completely out of the question. So they may be at a point intheir development where they actually deny the stimualtion of the idividual and therefore have no place in their society for music.
As an eldar player and lover i would like to believe they listen to something soothing as they strain their mental state alot.
As for necrons, if any one has seen Lara Croft: cradle of life, where the ball thing that unlocks the way to pandoras box makes those beeping sounds.
And nids, im sure there is some sort of bio-organism that is designed to produce some sort of music for them
It's the instrumental version heard in-game in Halo 2.
@Dark Eldar music, considering 70's porn, they might actually listen to Mahna Mahna over and over.

Back in the glory days of second edition with GW not yet emerged entirely from private ownership - well, not in terms of its corporate culture - there was a sublte little glyph of an electric guitar in the Codex: Orks with the note "Goff Rok." Based strictly on that, I could see the green dudes revering Brian Warner (IIRC) as a minor incarnation of Mork.
I think Chaos would deffinately listen to whatever is rebelious, music wise to the imperium, based on what has been said here, it would be something like:
Khorne = Death Metal, Screamo.
Slaanesh = Emo music(due to the pain and pleasure stuff it would be very 90's teenage angst style.) and Industrial Rock( raw and sexual like Rammstien or Tool)
Tzeench = Rock, Hardrock.
Nurgle = alternative rock, ( and i just cant get the image of deep southern music,
like blue grass or bangos out of my head due to the stereotypical poor hygene of the good ol boys)
