So i've been playing mostly 40k the past 2 years and my cousin wants to play fantasy now. I figure this is good as I always saw more balance here than in 40k. Only problem - I used to love playing VC either with necromancers or strigoi - but I hear there is a new codex that got rid of the bloodlines?

::sigh::

He's playing ogre kingdoms, my regular group includes an ork player, 2 dwarf players, a dark elf player, and myself with about 1/2 of an ork army (the other 1/2 was sold b/c I wanted to start over and then everyone was all about 40k for 2 years), and all that remains are an unpainted pile of

Obviously I have a choice now - Orks or VC (can someone please explain how the new VC are / sorry foor the noobish question). I've played both before - enjoyed them equally. Anyone have suggestions? I mean I don't really want to be eaten by my cousin who just started playing with his Ogre army - but I don't always want to bash him - so no 8 chaos charriot army (lol if it still exists)

Escalation start with about 500 points and go up to 2000+

Input welcome

VC are a very specialized list now, everything comes down to careful planning, but they are alot stronger IMO.
good trick would be to send a few bases of spirit hosts into something like his ironguts since they cant hurt the spirit hosts, cheap, but effective.
if he collects ogres then you can easily beat him senseless in the magic phase

if going for ork then they are very forgiving, and have the power to run at orgres and do well.
things like black orks with great weapons are ace.
squig heards do well if they dont run

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

lol, dont dice an army
by both armies books and have a read for a few days

VC have some lovely tricks lol, adding a corpse cart to zombies makes them pretty nasty.
but the old spirit host trick works great
just make sure they dont have a banner or rank bonus, dont want to lose thanks to that.
banshees and i think cairn wraiths work jst aswell.

I've on an army before - God it was between Tau IG and Necrons... And just so you know I hated painting up 4 conscript squads 6 regular squads and 7 tanks...

So no roll die here - are there any competitve all goblin lists out there? This is just a side question.

ive tried an all gobbo army before, its not bad (placed 3rd in 1 tourney and 2nd in another)
but they have too many weaknesses.
in a 2k game its best going with magic, all characters maxed out lvl and you have something good.
makesure all gobbo units on foot are atleast 36.
put fanatics in all night gobbo units.
dont take trolls, low LD means they will be drawing a pretty picture all battle.
giants are good as they give you some nice hitting power, and attract fire.
rock lobbers and spearchuckers are also great, keeps enemy units away from parts of the board, and causes plenty of panic.
take some snotling bases, they are expensive, but a good shield.
wolf and spider riders are amazing, great for outflanking and annoying.
doomdivers are also good for killing warmachine crew and lone wizzards.
i suggest mounting all shamen on wolfs to keep them out of danger, and some chance of hurting someone if they have to.
also, if you want t let an ork in let wurzag in, his magic is great.

just a rather large general summery for goblin collectrs

Yeah - I wanted an all gobbo / night gobbo army when I started again - but in the new O&G Dex, gobbos went up in points

So here I am - stuck at the decision... Orks and Gobbos or VC

Normally I never let this decide which army I choose... but since ya already got an O&G player, nab VC. I was burned when I first started tabletop wargames bc all my friends kept saying "no you cant play that soandso already does". So after that I never made choices based on groups armies. But in this case if ya kinda feel 50/50 either go on the adding variety to the group, or just look at the model ranges for a few hours and decide which will be the most fun to model and paint.

Play VC, you can basically make an auto play list. They did get rid of the bloodlines but you can essentially make the same lists with the new vamp powers.

"But remember that there are over 1000 chapters of spase marienz! So the SM codex has to cover over 1000 different kinds of spase marienz! Codex CSM only has to cover 1 kind (the Chaos kind). And I don't even think Eldar are a kind of spase marienz at all. Hurr!"

i really love auto play lists...
makes games really fun and interesting for both players...

/sarcasmff

it really depends on your style...
i like playing orcs because there are lots of random factors that determine how well i do...
i could do good i could do bad, but its almost always fun...

but right now, vc and orcs arent even really comparable...
since O&G was done a few years ago now, and with the power creep of the new books, they are on 2 completely different levels of the game...
dont expect to have an easy time beating daemons, high or dark elves, vampires, or hordes with greenskins (or lizardmen eventually)

99% of the time i will pick greenskins, but i really think both are decent choices...

Yeah I really love lists where random factors can decide your games.

/sarcasmoff

I made an overstatement. It's not really autoplay like brets but VC is really one of the best codexes out there.
