For something a little different:
Should the debates have included all the candidates? Aka should a proper debate have included theLibertarian Candidate, the Green Party Candidate, and Nader (however he's running)?
In the spirit of the different views, would it not have been wiser to proffer at least one debate reflecting the full range of opinion, and not just the two candidates who are angling towards the center?

Although it is a two party system in practice, you're never going to get out of that if you don't let the others come in.

Yes they should.
Actually I'm quite surprised that you don;t have some form of law that requires "X" amount of access for parties/candidates. Over here by law parties above a certain size/not quite sure exactly how this is worked out get given a minimum number of party political broadcasts etc whenever there is an election.
Truth be told, I wasn't all that certain that you even had other candidates.

The theory is that these are the only two candidates who have a chance of being elected. It doesn't hurt that the commission is derived solely from those two parties 
If we could add Ron Paul to the mix it would be great. Now get rid of the press conference style format and we can rock. Can you imagine a freeform debate with Nader, Bob Barr, Cynthia McKinney, Ron Paul, Obama, and McCain? Man, get me some popcorn!

There are a number of other outside parties and we used to have them at the debates.
Unfortunately, as soon as these other parties started to get a teensy bit of traction with the public, the Donkeyphant Republicrat made certain to use its media stranglehold to ban them from even watching the debates!

Have you ever seen Prime Ministers Question Time in the Houses of Parliment ?
random youtube clip As citizens of the realm we're entitled to go and watch this, I've been twice and when it gets going it's ace. When Clinton was in power and visited he was asked about this and basically thanked the lord above the President doesn't have to go through anything similar.
Do you have any shows like Question Time ? It can be a bit hairy for our overlords-- do you think she is popular ?, --
and it's always entertaining to see people like Galloway spouting off again.

I'm all for equal participation in debates. But I expect it'll be some years before we start to see that happen.
Still, some combination of economic down-turn (already on the way) and higher public education (I expect this is inevitable as well) should see it through. Give it 20 years. When my generation hits the 40's I suspect the electoral college will be on its last legs.

Agree with Gonads. Someone who's only attracting a lunatic fringe isn't a real candidate, and has no real chance of being elected. Who cares what they have to say, when it won't matter for the country?

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.
But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

the current set up with only these 2 canidates in debate is the reason we don't have more than 2 parties in the US... We NEED to start having the 5 major parties involved in all aspects and we NEED the media to support this.
I want to vote for Rob Paul... but I don't like his stance on NASA :(
