Yes, there is a chance element aspect to the game to represents being able to miss even at close range by only clipping the armour or something else entirely, its annoying yes, live with it.

The only way round it if its really is that much of "an issue" would be a to have a house rule that makes things an automatic hit within a certain distance.

Me personally, I wouldn't really cripe about it, it was simply damn unlucky your gunner aimed just that little bit too high for that shot. also, are you proposing a rule? otherwise this is in the wrong forum.

Tanks are big. Tanks are scary. They make loud noises and shake the earth as they idle, they don't even have to move to be scary and intimidating! The gunner wet his pants, couldn't find the trigger, whatever. Proximity to the enemy is inversely relative to how scary they are, doubly so for tanks, and compounded by super big, venerable ones!

It is sort of silly to be within one inch of a vehicle and still missing with your lascannon, but that is sort of taken into account of the fact that infantry are still able to take out 41st millenia tanks in hand to hand combat. This isn't WWII, even modern tanks have infantry defense systems, such as small explosives wired into the hull, electrodes, pointy parts to stop people climbing on them, extremely hot parts for the same reason, just to name a few.

to be honest if i had a bloody baneblade that close to me i wouldnt bother shooting it.
running would be the 1st thing on my mind.

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

If there was a bane blade that close to you, running won't help much.

I'd hop on and pray no one had auto turrets on the thing. When/if the hatch opens, chuck a nade in there, and either claim the posthumus kill for cooking off a baneblade, or simply enjoy my new tank.

And, I think that there are plenty of logical, fluffy reasons not to change the current rules.

Also, that magic test is crap... I turned out to be a white. But I like my chaos loud and my anarchy in large portions please

there is a plauge marine with a melta gun (they are fearless) he is 3" away from the side Armour of a baneblade, i don't think they would miss that easily!

but iv got an idea for a house rule
Point Blanc Range:
if a model with BS 3 or higher is within 6" of whatever he/she/it is shooting at he/she/it automaticly hits and continues to roll to wound/penatrate as normal
(fliers ignore this rule because they move to fast)

Shrike78: i know for goodness sake if i was green i would be collecting eldar, so i perposfully changed it to red LOLZ

How about this?

Point Blanc Range:
if a model with BS 3 or higher is within 6" of whatever he/she/it is shooting at he/she/it automaticly hits and continues to roll to wound/penatrate as normal, if they pass a leadership test (maybe some other test, like initiative).
(fliers ignore this rule because they move to fast)

This shows just how scary a tank is, affecting the shooting of the poor guys who are trying to tank down the tank. Obviously fearless units won't care and tanks will start blowing up right and left.

Chaos Marines are also supposed to be quite insane and rather unpredictable. Or that they trully are NOT fearless, just for morale test purposes they are. You can still stand your ground and fight on, but be scared shitless and unable to hit crap with your weapon.

@ Shrike : If it were that easy, how come it doesn't happen? Seriously, when in history has that happened? Saving Private Ryan doesn't count as history. The Japanese used to try that, but it didn't work so well because the crew would just stay buttoned up and have the Infantry "scratch [their] back." From a realistic stand point, and take it from someone who has been around tanks, they are big, bigger when they are running, bigger still when they are moving, and just being near one rolling by makes you want to take a step back. Jumping on is that last thing on one's mind.

Point Blank Range : No effect on gameplay.

That is my opinion of the matter.

If you agree that my Baneblade doesn't have to roll the scatter dice because it's shots are huge and awesome, I'll agree that you can't miss from 3" away.

@Skinnattittar

2 things

1. I think your avatar is AWSOME!!! I laugh my @$$ off every time I see it.

2. I was joking about hoping onto a the tank. Although vs a baneblade, Considering all those heavy bolters they have, running away and entering their ideal range of effectiveness isn't a great idea.

Then again, getting anywhere near a baneblade isn't a good idea either...

Please don't think I'm an idiot for a punitive attempt at humor.

You may have run out of ammo and had to reload, you may have tripped or fumbled a bit, you may have physically "hit" the tank with your shot but it was such a lousy shot that it has absolutely no chance of doing anything.....

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

40K is stupid in various ways because it is a game rather than a simulation.

What I mean is, things that make sense in a game do not always reflect reality very well.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Another thing that many people do not realise is that Warhammer 40k started off with Game Masters, who could pretty much do anything. It was their jobs to catch these osrts of things that didn't need to be written as rules because that would set a precedence that wasn't really needed. WH40k doesn't have GMs anymore, the players are supposed to be their own GMs. Part of the game is losing, part of the game is winning, the biggest part is working with your opponent to make a fun game, and more often then not, my favorite games are ones where me and my opponent are making exceptions, being fluffy, and just having a good time. So if you and your opponent decide that the model is motivated enough and the shot just too darn easy enough, use "Point Blank Range," but I think you'll find most young gamers these days too concerned with winning the battle than everyone having a good time. I was when I was a little young jerk.
