What's their life expectancy? The Imperial Gurad must be enormous across the galaxy, surely there are plenty who never see battle? They mostly end up serving for crowd control and ceremonial duties.

But others end up having to fight a war on their own world and some must be drafted to the front line if there is fighting in a near by star system. That's the point at which the Imperium seem to throw their lives away like candy. Or do they? Some battles take huge casualties but some troops are probably posted in areas that don't see much fighting.

So if you're lucky and don't up in many battles you'll probably live quite a long time, but if you're stuck in conflicts all the time you probably should bother with a pension plan. So does life expectancy vary between certain units, cadian, catchan, steel legion etc?

More serious I may add : Imperial guardsmen could survive about 2 weeks or a month. PDF could survive 15 minutes or 15 years.
Its those "theatres of war" where your pension plan gets ruined.

Depends:

Who's writing your story?

Do you have a name?

Do you have a first name?

Do you have a rank higher than corporal?

What are you fighting?

is that:

turn 1: thier transport gets blown up
turn 2: they get blown up?

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

If they're in range of your big guns, the other way around.

SO MUCH HERESY!!!

The warriors of the Immortal Emperor can face any foe without such pitiful figures, your lack of faith is both disturbing and heretical.

I'd say it depends on your regiment and gear...

Savlar chem-dogs? I give them three minutes.
Valhallans? A whole different ballgame...

Well, I would suppose that it depends on training, speed, agility, and intelligence for each individual soldier. Well... Not so much intelligence sinc eth COs do that work...

The other factors come in whn the soldier is faced with something nasty, like an Ork.

But for average: I say two hours if the opponent has no artilery, but if he does... 1 minute at max.

You also have to take in when the commissar decides to shot one to improve the morale of the squad.

In my experience if the trooper gets an armour save they live, but otherwise they die faster than my wife spends money.

A six to save, but a one to hit, huh....

i'd say 2-3 snazzgun shots (one needs to hit)
or, about 2 mins max if they are made to do da burny dance!

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

According to Einstien's theory of relativity, guardsmen have a life expectancy equal to the square root of the amount of milk they have drunk divided by the number of hours they were yelled at by a comisar with a yellow hat with a propeller, to the fourth power

Perhaps the phrase "gone in 60 seconds"is very appropriate here?
