Ok so yesterday I played two, one thousand point games, each against a different foe. I was trying out a new strat, so here's my army : 1 Butcher w/ Hellheart OR Bangstick + Weirdstone, 1 Butcher with improved armour and Banner (Bull Banner), nine bulls with light armour + iron fists, 4 leadbelchers. Terrain in the skaven game was a single hill in the center, with another hill beside it. (I like blocking sight). His army is divided into four units (I forget which they were, didn't matter.)

Round 1 (Me) : March ogres forward. Literally one giant column. Casting phase he counters all my magic. Shooting phase no targets in range.
Round 1 (Skaven) : Moves forward a bit, edging his units closely together to attempt to grab my sides when I charge. I eat the hellheart. He casts greater lightning, to which I counter. Then his next unit (which is his general) casts greater lightning but rolls doubles and has to miscast on my chart. General removed from battle. Next wizard attempts to cast lesser lightning but also rolls doubles, resulting in the wizard losing THAT spell (which was his only one). End of phase, all his rats make leadership saves and succeed.

Round 2 (Me) : Charge forward with the eight bulls + Bruiser into his center column (touching two other units) and move my leadbelchers onto the hill. He fails his "fear" check and needs to roll 6's to hit. Cast strength buff, but he counters. Cast "Panic" and fail. Leadbelchers take shots at his one, unengaged unit of rats. Destroy all but three, which run and take a hit on my own ogre. My impact hits take out 5 of his rats from his center unit, and after attacks I take out an additional 10 more rats. They make a return attack and fail to hit. The left most unit gets 10 attacks on my ogres and hits with all 10, but only wounds on 2 but I only suffer one due to an armour save. His right most unit fails to hit. All units fail break tests and need to run. I overrun two of them, and the third makes it to the table edge.
Round 2 (Skaven) : His 3 remaining rats fail to make the rally check and run off the board.

I won by 1598 points. I only suffered two wounds and one was self inflicted. A really REALLY great game for me.

------------------------------------------

In the elf game he had dryads closest to me, archers next, Glade Guards (I think, they use swords) and finally on the far edge his horses (the entire army was spread across the whole 5 feet). I setup my ogres as far forward, but right against the far right edge of the table. Terrain was thrown down that he put a line of forests across the whole table, and I put impassable terrain infront of each one to block them. There was a tiny crack to fit through on the right and that was it.

Round 1 (Me) : Move forward with Bull + Bruiser + Butcher. Leadbechers behind them. Bruiser casts magic missile, which is countered, and strength on the Bull/Bruiser unit. Uses a bangstick on the dryads, taking two out.
Round 1 (Elf) : His horses move around the left side of the board, hoping to catch my rear (Somehow, I don't think he expected me to deploy on this side of the board, they didnt do anything for the game, aside from slowly come across the board to my rear each turn). His dryads move forward, his archers form a line facing my forces and his sword elfs move towards the forest.

Round 2 (Me) : Charge my bull column into the dryads. Succeed against his fear (one of his models has terror). Cast regen on my butcher. Attempt to magic missile dryads but get countered. Shoot with bangstick and miss. Impact hits deal 4 hits, but due to ward saves none are inflicted. Attacks take out 3 more dryads.
Round 2 (Him): He attempts to cast a spell, but is countered. He can take no shots. He deals six wounds from the dryads to my bulls. Combat is resolved, and I need to run. My ogres run away 5 inches, behind my leadbelchers who stand and shoot (I didnt realize you cant stand and shoot at targets less than half of "the charge" away.) taking out the rest of his dryads EXACTLY (no leftover wounds). BUT at the end of phase, my running unit passing through the leadbelchers causes THEM to run STRAIGHT off the table edge. The butcher does not fail HIS leadership roll and stays in play.

Round 3 (Me) : Rally the bulls. Move the wizard up. Cast regen on butcher. Cast magic missile on his archers, taking half out. Shoot them with the bangstick taking two more out, leaving six.
Round 3 (Him) : Move his swordmen into the forest. Shoot my butcher, dealing two wounds.

Round 4 (Me) : Move my bulls into the forest, but cannot reach him for the charge. He stands and shoots, but fails to inflict wounds. My wizard casts healing and recovers a wound, magic missile on his swordsmen taking out a quarter of the unit and after dispelling his own spell he casts regen on the bulls (ogres can have multiple versions of a single spell in play, just not on the same turn.) Wizard uses bangstick, reducing his archers to two. Bulls charge but he flees and I fail to reach him. He is out of the forest and I am still 1/8th of an inch from the edge. His swordsmen flee after a break test.
Round 4 (Him) : Rallies his swordsmen, which are now too far away to do anything effective. Archers shoot on my butcher but fail to inflict wounds.

Round 5 (Me) : Magic I spend recovering another wound (so he wouldn't get half points) and casting nothing else due to distance between my butcher and his units. Shot at him with my bangstick on his swordsmen and took two more out. He succeeds at a break test.
Round 5 (Him) : Shoots at my leader, attempting to cause a break but failing to wound.

I win by 163 points, barely winning despite decimating his forces and only losing a single unit.

-------------------

The first battle I learned that having the right item to fight the right army can make all the difference in the world.
The second battle I learned that a tight column versus elves is highly effective, and that I used to make a mistake when fighting dryads. I cannot overcome the ward save they have, so I need to use my ironfists for extra attacks versus them. Also, it may be prudent if I were playing in a higher cost game to take a tyrant, and use daemon killer scars when fighting the dryads so I am not affected by the fear. Also I need to keep an eye on the distances for standing and shooting.

Overall two fun games. So far I've fought : Skaven three times (won twice), High Elves once (I won), Wood Elves twice (I won once). 4/2/0 isn't bad for a newbie.

nice job on the wood elf game, I have never fought them as the one guy at my FLGS plays them and he also plays two other armies (skaven and 40K chaos) and what I have to say about the skaven is, well that was expected, unless he played clan eshin... my iron guts still have nightmares about the super assassin

95% of teens would go into a panic attack if the jonas brothers were about to jump off the empire state building copy and paste this if you are the 5% who would pull up a lawn chair grab some popcorn and yell JUMP BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am both selfish and instinctive. I value growth and community, as long as they favour my own objectives; I enjoy nature, and I particularly enjoy watching parts of nature die. At best, I am resilient and tenacious; at worst, I'm uncontrollable and destructive.

This combat sounds really strange. Did he not deal any wounds to you on your turn? Did you not deal any wounds to him on his turn? You do realise both sides get to strike each turn, regardless of which player's turn it is, right?

Otherwise, nice battle reports!

Keep in mind that a butcher (nor a hunter) can be your general, so you need to scrap up the points for a bruiser to smash things about. Or maybe you mistyped and that second butcher is a bruiser? But then a BSB can't be your general (and a butcher can't take a banner either way), so you still need a plain bruiser. Annnnd you also need 2 core units for a legal 1k list, which means you need 1 more - do gnoblars count as core? I can't remember ... Crazed list no matter, the quad-belchers and the bullstar.

Cheers for the reports, good luck in your rampages, but do take a look at making your list legal (and yea, it does suck that there are these IMO fairly silly restrictions on ogre army comp )
