Painting Rust in Two Colors

I recently started working on some Orks after acquiring the Assault on Black Reach boxed set. It took me a bunch of months but I finally finished cleaning them all off and eventually finished a model for my test scheme. One of the things that really seemed to catch peoples eye was the simple yet effective rust effect I came up with for my metals.

To start off with you of course need to get a base coat started. This could be whatever color really, here I've gone with a Brown Violet from Vallejo. The second step is to take a very beat up old brush and apply splotches of Vermin Brown by stippling the old brush in a random pattern. You can apply as little or as much of this as you want, it's all about the final effect you're going for! The third and final step (at least for today), is to stipple Fiery Orange over the Vermin Brown layer. I used a standard brush for the final step and made it broken and random. For an idea of where you can take this here's my finished Ork test model:

As you can see, I have done some additional weathering and metal work around and on top of this effect to make it more subtle and feel more realistic.

A quick side note: Apparently GW isn't selling Fiery Orange anymore, but you could easily use Blazing Orange instead for this technique. For those of you with Fiery Orange still, disregard!

There are many different rust painting techniques out there, and you should definitely do some research as to just what style of rust you are going for on a particular piece. The more you know about the different approaches, the more variation and realism you can apply to your own take on rust.

So lets here em, how do you paint your rusty bits?

This is very nice and simple, G_D. Stipling can be a difficult technique to get just right, practice first since initial attempts tend to overapply individual colors. The 'Eavy Metal team did the Alaitoc Craftworld in stipled blue and had some tutorials for it on the website.

Great idea, thanks for sharing!

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

Looks better on the Ork. The bright colors in the tutorial make it look more like the axe has some kind of strange disease rather than mere rust.

I don't like how there is so little, and very bright rust on the mini.

Why would only random portions of the slugga and choppa have rust on them?

It's not as if that's the rust visible coming up from beneath a layer of paint, which is what it looks like you have going.

I find it very hard to believe that you would have that much of a contrast on the rust. All of the metal should have a rust effect, or none of it.

What you have painted looks more like random mold growing on the armor. It does look interesting though.

Looks good to me!
Very nice, and simple. I'll have to test it on some boyz sometime.

Thanks!

rust tends to spread rather than effect a whole surface area at a time, usually starting from edges as the metal is easier to break down as such. (as you can see in piccy 1)

top tip though grey, quick to do and very effective.
blazing orange should have a similar effect to fiery, but a tad darker.

nice im thinking to start with the orks and buy the AoBR set so this helps to let the models look cool

Rust:

I've used many many different methods over time.

Initially, I'd paint the surface scorched brown, and then give it a wash with watered-down boltgun metal, then a wash with a brown/black ink wash, and finally, a light drybrush with blazing orange.

Lately, I've been using something called Rustall, from micro-mark, which is a four-step rust-effect, involving a rust wash, a black wash, a matte finish (real rust is not shiny at all) and then a powder coat of dirt.

I find using boltgun metal as the colour of the weapon, then simply drybrushing black and tin bitz seems to work reasonably well

Tin Bitz,Boltgun, Dark Flesh Stiple, Sunburst Orange Stiple, purple was for me. Then an all-over wash of an oil based bright orange to get all the crevices rusty.

I agree with you, Grey_death.

Here is an example using the same method, but used on my industrial bases.

Shonuff, that's a fantastic example for rusting. Mine was as 'get it done quick for the tip', where that is a nice cross section of metals with a great variety of surfaces and rusted finishes.

If folks have more examples with different methods, or even the same method, I'd love to see them posted!
