General fluff question, why do Chaos marines have those backpacks with the long arms protruding from them? Surely they should have similar ones to the current marines, or at least pre-heresy ones which are fairly similar. They are seen on the covers of the Horus Heresy books and look like the metal ones on the early RT marines.

I don't know, but as a csm player I really dislike the chaos backpacks...

so did I. I thought those packs were ridiculous. Ive always either chopped those extended parts off or just used SM packs from the get go.

Me too, I always felt it was strange how when the space marines turned to chaos, their new dark masters appeared to them and said:
Dark lord:"If you serve me, you can have infinite rewards! so, to start you off,... BEHOLD!... a slighlty extended backpack"
CSM:"Thank you master, that's ..er.. great, is it OK if I carry a bolter, bolt pistol AND a chainsword too?"
Dark Lord: "Oh alright then, but don't try fitting more than ten of you in a landraider, I don't want you chipping the paint on your new backpacks."

Its obvious WHY GW have done it, its an easy way to differentiate between the good guys and bad guys....same as the horns, spikes, leather gloves, and belt fed bolters......
Generally Chaos space marines are a little cliched, to say the least.....
The funniest slip up though, how come the Red Corsairs don't have standard MK7 armour like the Imperials, seeing as they are freshly turned to Chaos, and orginated from a Codex Chapter....

It might be because that csm are no longer loyalists, so they changed things, and because they get mutated there backpacks could have mutated to look like that. but i think they look pritty sweet

well yea didnt you know that as a SM when you make that decision. "yanno... what the hey, im going to be chaos now" instantly you hear a knock on the door
"KNOCK KNOCK"
you open the door
uhm... yes?
HELLO! are you brother whatsyourface?
errmmm..... yes
GRRRRREAT! I have a care package that was SUPER RUSH DELIVERY!
uh... thanks?
and as you open the box the inside contents are reveled
" what the? spikes...... an assortment of odd hair extensions and topknots..... and a backpack with extended exhaust vents?"
at least thats how i see it. that DOES explain how the red corsairs went from modern SM to old school chaos

Alright, the general consensus seems to be that there is no good reason for the arms, they just are. I guess it should be alright to give loyalist marines those types of packs so long as the chaos symbols are removed, much like some people use csm (incl beserkers) for marine body parts.
Obviously a Red Corsair player who wants to be proper can cut the extended arms off and reattach the vents (they also look good on loyalists). Of cource they would still have the problem of all those horned helmets so maybe they shold just swap the heads and packs for normal marine ones.

Wouldn't it be easier for the RC player to just use the loyalist squads and just paint a big red X here and there?

My CSM are all recently turned to chaos in my fluff, so are mainly made using space marines with the odd CSM part thrown in.
I have never used the chaos backpacks so have several hundred knocking around in my bitz box if anybody wants them.

This.
According to Dark Heresy, powerarmor can only be powered for hours at a time. So the extended power packs would make a lot of sense for the poorly supported CSM.
