I am a first time WFB player. I own no models but have borrowed an army or two and played a game or two a couple of editions ago. I own no books as of now as I am more of a 40k player. I know a little about the game and am willing to trust Dakka to help make a list from the following criteria.

1.) Start with a 500pt list - no specials - after choosing the 500pt list will ask Dakka to help build the next 250 and so on.
2.) Good looking models, hopefully lots of detail
3.) Lower model count as I am doing a PnP with the imp guard. See here for that thread and my paint style. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/225557.page
4.) Like knights, ogres, big models, elves but really open to any army that fits the above criteria.
5.) Somewhat competitive. Doesn't have to be the strongest list
but not weak would be nice.

This would help allot as I do not want to buy all the books at this stage and might not like the game much. I will buy whatever books needed after choosing the army in question however.

Thanks in advance and will post pictures of the completed army if it is chosen and written here.

I will also be giving updates on the games and my experiences with the army (complete with pictures.)

Thanks....

You want an elite kind of army, it sounds like.

  • Bretonnians are a Knight army that tends to have a lower model count. The only things you might have to field in large numbers are their peasants.
  • High Elves have two flavors of knights, though it's difficult to have a mounted force with them (they have no mounted choices in their core slot). However, their units are costed somewhat higher than others.
  • Wood Elf mounted troops are very fast and laden with special abilities. However, they are fragile, and sometimes its tough making choices for your Special slot when you're choosing between Wild Riders and other things in the list.

Well so far out of those options Bretonians sound like the better bet. I usually do not lean towards elite armys but this is a special case. The larger more impressive models, lower count, the better. I like mounted things and probally wouldn't mind peasants later in the paint and play. The core and specials are my main concern at the moment. I do like speed and maneuverability but it is not super high on my list. FYI. So that is a good start so far.

1. Bretonnians
2. High elves
3. Wood elves

Hrm, or Tomb King Chariots might be neat.

Hadn't thought of that.

I really like the idea of unique armies as well. An all chariot army sounds like a fun idea. Things people don't do often is also a great idea. Keep em coming.

1. Bretonnians
2. Chaos chariot army
3. High elves
4. Tomb Kings chariot army
5. Wood elves

Well, if y' like Ogres and big models, and want an Army with Low model Count, I would suggest Ogre Kingdoms.

I second this. Ogres are a blast to collect and play with

Ogres play one way generally.......charge. Go straight forward and mess someone up. Whether to do MSU or blocks of ogres is a topic of heavy debate.

in a game under 1000 hunters are good....anything above that dont even bother

Chaos Mortals with Knights and Marauder Horse as Core? Great new models, low model count and with prices fairly easy on the wallet.

Hey papa so all the core units can be horse riders? Do they have any mounted archers? If so are they any good. I remember hearing about the chaos knights. That they are a F'ing brick was the description used I think.

Yeah you can use marauder horse for all the core, they can't have bows but can have throwing axes, usually they are armed with flails so they hit hard first turn. You can give they light armour with the flails so they have a kind of save or give them light armour and shields for sorta medium cav but they lose their fast cav abilities which is sorta what we take them for. Knights can make gross hammer units especially when combined with a Khorne Lord on Juggernaut (Just remember to base him on a cav base cause its not longer a monsterous mount! teeheehee)

I have an all mounted list that I can post for you if I dig it out.

OK here it is, doesn't have a Khorne Lord, but was effective nonetheless, may swap out MOS for MON on some of the marauder horse, will probably drop the medium cav back to fast cav

Exalted Champion - MOS, Steed of Slaanesh, Shield, Sword of Might, Collar of Khorne, Favour of the Gods

Chaos Sorcerer - MOT, Chaos Steed, Book of Secrets, Dispel Scroll conjoined Homunculus, Lvl 2

Chaos Sorcerer - Lvl 2, Chariot, Spell Familiar, Dispel Scroll

6 x Marauder Horsemen - Light Armour, Spear, Musician, MOS

6 x Marauder Horsemen - Light Armour, Spear, Musician, MOS

6 x Marauder Horsemen - Light Armour, Flail, Musician, MOS

6 x Marauder Horsemen - Light Armour, Flail, Musician, MOS

6 x Marauder Horsemen - Light Armour, Shield, Spear, Musician, Banner, MOS

7 x Warhounds

7 x Warhounds

6 x Chaos Knights - MOT, Full Command, Blasted Standard

6 x Chaos Knights - MOS, Full Command, War Banner

hope this helps

Looks good. Is there anyway to have the knights as core units? Or is there a list that allows for that. Marauders are cool but was hoping on heavy knights as my primary. I do however like your list allot and it would be top of the list so far.

no the old list had knights as core, can't have it with the new list. Knights are smashier in this book however so some good with some no so good

Did some quick math, this list is $300 + the characters to purchase so not terrible on the pocketbook

As I will be collecting slowly. 250pts at a time the cost is not that important to me as it will be collected over at least 7 months. That will soften the financial blow. Cheaper is always nice but not a primary concern. The marauder models are pretty damned cool as are the knights. So how would you make a first 250 chunk? Keeping in mind the Hq can be added later (at 500 the hq is mandatory) and he can get upgraded in this league.

So this is a warbands league? I'd start with

3 x Marauder Horse throwing axe LA (45? might be 48)
3 x Marauder Horse throwing axe LA (48 I'll guess high)
2 x Chaos Knight (80)
2 x Chaos Knight (80)

should be around 250, 4 fast units, 2 cause fear and two have some fun shooting! (I love throwing axes at lone characters and watching their reaction when they hit at Str4)
next round you could add a character plus either another unit of marauder horse or bump each of the units you have bigger. Looks like fun!

Sounds like a good start. The units do have to be legal. Can you have units of 3 and 2? If so this is a very good start. If they are this will get added to the group. I will put this list with any others I get and do a poll for which one I will do.

If it's a warbands league, then it has special rules.

Its not a warbands league per say. It is a paint and play. 500pts to start. No specials till later. limit one of each slot except core to start. Hq is 0-1 at 500pts. Each month adds 250 points of painted stuff. You can build up units and upgrade them at that time. Those are the rules in a nutshell. So I have to work with those parameters. So units have to be legal, fitting minimum model counts.

ok then you could start with this

6 x warhounds (30)
6 x warhounds (30)
5 x Marauder Horsemen Flails MON (95)
5 x Marauder Horsemen Flails MON (95)

250 on the nose

second 250

Exalted on Steed
more horsemen

6 knights is 240 with no upgrades so that is a month all on its own

Good Luck, I'm starting my own paint and play in January, its 500pts per month, legal list each month with a massive mega battle at the end.
