I'm considering a forest spirit army - in fact really an 'all tree army' ... And i was wondering which is better as a lord choice - a treeman ancient or drycha? Also I'm not keen on buying all the treemen and treekin - instead i want to make them ... any advice on that?

Take Drycha and 2 treemen, its the only way you will be competitive in a 2000 pt list.

I dont know about making your own tree kin, however you should be prepared to make a lot of them, seeing as how they are the only ranked unit you have, without them, your sunk.

yes but they are expensive points wise - and the ranking thing is a problem.
