I went up against my friends Ogre Kingdoms force with my last Zombiefest list (consisting of a caster vampire, corpse cart and 3 x 30 man zombie squads) and things quickly turned into an orgy of ogre destruction as my zombies got violated by burly ogres in ways not fit to discuss in good company.
I've thusly remade my list to something I think is abit more effective!
Some notes.
Last game my vampire got shut down in the magic phase by my opponents Butcher. He had one less dispel dice than I had power dice, but I'd often use two dice to try to force those Invocations through. My vampire got sniped by his Butcher as he cunningly removed my mobile screen (zombies) enough to get a bead on him. 10 s2 no armor save hits later my vampire limped from the battle and the army crumbled, though I did slaughter a unit of Gnoblar trappers and contest the graveyard objective.
Now I'm going a different path. Instead of a single vampire I'm going for two necromancers. Not only does this mean I can spread my magic power abit, but I also get another dispel dice, meaning I'm even with his Butchers power dice (mwaha). Also, I'm bringing two corpse carts this time. Now that I've got 4 power dice with two (or three even) bound spells in play he'll have to make some hard choices about what to dispel, which is exactly where I want him.
Without further ado here's my zombie horde list:(Made using the warband rules. Quick recap: No single model over 150 pts (so two heroes together not being over 150 points is ok. The regular restriction for being forced to take a vampire is waived.)
Necromancer (General)
{- Sceptre de Noirot} OR {Rod of Flaming death}
{- Extra spell}
*Spells*
*Invocation of Nehek*
*Raise Dead*
Necromancer

Total= 600 pts.
Notes about the list:
I'm abit torn between getting Sceptre de Noirot plus an extra spell on my general, or getting the Rod of Flaming death. The Sceptre and the spell are more utility oriented, but the Rod would give me some much needed killing power, plus potentially making some of his ogres start running!
I plan on using my first two turns (where I assume I'm not in combat) to spam IoN into my zombie units, beefing them up before the inevitable collision with the ogres. Last game I maneuvered inside 6" of the ogres so I faced no impact hits and I feel confident I can do so again next time. I plan on deploying abit tighter than I did last time and to deploy in a prong so that my center unit can possibly flank any early chargers (or flank the flankers). Raise dead failed me last game, since I didn't manage to cast it once...but I think with abit more aggressive casting, and having more control of the magic phase will open up more possibilities for some rear end (or flank, I'm not picky) zombie action.
Thoughts, comments welcome!
p.s.
Some of you might be wondering why I only have zombies in the list. The reason is really that I kinda dislike the new VC book, being alot more of a "Undead" player than I ever was a Vampire player. I prefer the image of fell necromancers and ancient wights rising up to do battle with the living and to spread terror and destruction. I prefer ghouls who use to be human but through depravity and desperation have become something horrific and feast on the flesh of others. Of hordes of mindless undead sweeping across the land, their ranks bolstered by any who fall to their ancient blades. In the shadows the rare and elusive vampires pull their strings and manage their webs of intrigue to bring about an age of endless night.
The current VC book, while by no means a weak list, does not capture this feeling at all. Vampires are everywhere, necromancers are ridiculed and the undead list seems to imply that I should be taking my elite units and bashing the enemy on an anvil made of the weaker undead. Meh...I prefer my zombies and skeletons over elite vampiric cavalry any day (I'm looking at you Blood Knights).
To sum it up, I play the Undead...not Vampire Counts. So, lets see what we can do by limiting ourselves to the basic undead!
Let the Zombiefest begin!
