These are old Battle Reports (like 2004 old) that I had posted on old dakka, but seeing as how I've found enough of my notes that I might be able to finally finish typing up the entire campaign, I figured I'd repost them here to have a thread anchoring it all.

This campaign pits my Tau against the mighty Imperial fleet of
Charlie, with occasional appearances of Bruce's Ork raiders.

BUILD-UP
And now it's time for the first battle of the campaign, an Imperium vs. Tau
engagement where the Tau have seized the initiative. The Kor'vettra was
going to be making a blockade run against the D'nar system.

We agreed on a 750 point game, which meant that I'd only be fielding 375
points of Tau against a much larger Imperial force. The Tau fleet was also
attempting a little subterfuge, using a decoy ship in their attack. Could
the Fleet Experience of Commander Karl Hassel penetrate the Xenos ploy?

TAU FORCES
Decoy Ship (I used a T'olku configuration Hero-class to represent this)
Bright Sword
Vigilant
Vigilant Squadron
365 Points

IMPERIAL FORCES
Pride of Davos
Unbreakable
Lord Threen
His Will
Asp Squadron
750 Points

LAYOUT
Having decided that we were playing in the outer reaches of the system, we
divided our 180cm by 120cm board into 60cm square 'segments' and generated
celestial phenomena using method 2 from page 41 of the rulebook, with the
'top' long edge being sunward.

The battle zone was dominated by a large (44cm diameter!) ring-less planet
in the upper center segment of the board, with 2 moons, one in the lower
center, and one towards the upper starboard. Also in the upper starboard was
a small dust cloud. In the lower starboard were two large gas clouds. On the
port side of the board were four asteroid fields, one of which was in the
upper segment.

Imperial Deployment
Rolling for deployment sections left the Imperial fleet with an empty center
near the planet. On the port side, the Unbreakable and Lord Threen were
deployed facing starboard, bringing their broadsides into firing arcs at the
Tau table edge, which was 70cm away. In front of the Unbreakable, Asp
Squadron deployed in a 2-3 triangle facing the Tau table edge, ready to
supply covering fire. On the starboard side of the planet, the placement of
the Pride of Davos and His Will mirrored that of the other Imperial capital
ships.

Tau Deployment
The Tau exploited the gap in the Imperial line by deploying fairly
centrally, if slightly to the starboard. The Bright Sword was deployed as
far forward as possible, roughly 20cm starboard of the planet's second moon,
with Vigilant Squadron a further 16cm starboard and the Vigilant itself
between the Hero-class and the port-most escort, as well as slightly behind.
The decoy was deployed right behind the moon facing diagonally to port.

Tau Turn 1
The engagement gets off to a less than auspicious start as the decoy ship
fails it's command check for All Ahead full orders and has to content itself
with moving its maximum distance towards the foe on its present heading.
This should still leave it as the closest ship to the enemy. The Bright
Sword moves 10cm towards the foe, cautiously weighing up the opposition,
while the Vigilant and its accompanying Orcas maintain formation 15cm closer
to the enemy, though the Starboard Orca does make a clockwise 45? turn at
the end of its move in order to maintain formation next turn.

The Imperial fleet remains out of range of any direct fire, so the Vigilant
launched a torpedo salvo towards the Emperor's lapdogs, but the ordnance
fell just short of the Pride of Davos.

Imperial Turn 1
The Unbreakable Burned Retros in order to turn before it could become
mingled with the Cobras. His Will moved up behind the planet's first moon,
using a 45? turn in its move to do so. The Pride of Davos copied the
maneuver, maintaining it's relative position with His Will. The Cobras of
Asp Squadron flew headlong towards the Tau table edge before making a hard
turn to starboard.

His Will then opened fire on the nearest Hero-class, which was the decoy
ship. The firing was ineffective, but I did appreciate the look on Charlie's
face when he realized that he had wasted fire on what was effectively a
non-existent vessel. That was the only direct fire in range. His Will
followed up with a torpedo salvo at the decoy ship, destroying it utterly.
First (inconsequential) blood to the Imperium! The Tau torpedo salvo drifted
out of the battlezone, ending the turn.

Tau: 0 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Imperial: 0 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.

Tau Turn 2
The Kor'vattra started out aggressively, with the Bright Sword speeding
forwards and then turning to the starboard, bringing its guns to bear on His
Will, with the Vigilant also approaching the Endurance-class and Locking On.
Vigilant Squadron also moved up to engage the enemy, with the port escort
changing its heading to bring weaponry to bear on the Pride of Davos.

Firing began with a railgun battery from the Vigilant knocking out His Will's
shields and scoring four impacts on the hull of the light cruiser, crippling
the Imperial vessel. Buoyed by this success, the Bright Sword fired on the
beleaguered craft, scoring a further hit with its railguns before charging
its ion cannon. These ion cannon scored a further hit on His Will,
critically damaging the thrusters, and rendering the imperial vessel a
Drifting Hulk. The Orca squadron opened fire at the Pride of Davos with the
Ion Cannon of the port escort knocking out the Imperial ship's shields,
while the other Orca scored a hit on the Lunar-class's hull. The turn ended
as the Imperial torpedoes smashing into the planet's second moon.

Imperial Turn 2
The Imperium responded to the loss of His Will by ordering Asp Squadron to
Lock On as they approached the Bright Sword. The Unbreakable continues to
move down the table, though a turn in its move allows its broadsides to fire
at the Bright Sword. The Pride of Davos closes with the port-most Orca. The
Lord Threen moves in behind the Cobras and then turns to orientate itself
with the escorts, while the hulk of His Will drifts perilously close to the
Bright Sword.

The front trio of Asp Squadron fires their batteries at the Tau Hero-class,
but these are absorbed by the Tau shields. The Pride of Davos launches
torpedoes at Vigilant squadron, destroying both Orcas. In the meantime, Asp
Squadron's torpedoes slam into the hull of the Bright Sword, taking out the
Tau bridge.

Tau: 120 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Imperial: 50 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.

Tau Turn 3
Things kick off with the Bright Sword going All Ahead Full towards the upper
port corner of the board, even with its lowered Leadership, and the Vigilant
Locking On to the Pride of Davos. The Merchant follows up by firing its
railguns at the Imperial Lunar class, impacting the hull twice and ending
the Tau turn.

Imperial Turn 3
The turn begins with Asp Squadron and the Pride of Davos Reloading Ordnance,
and the Lord Threen going All Ahead Full to close with the Vigilant. The
Pride of Davos then passed under the planet's first moon to line up its port
gun with the Vigilant, while the Unbreakable swung by the second moon to
close with the foe. Asp Squadron also headed for the hapless Vigilant. The
Imperial fleet opened fire.

Which the Vigilant failed to Brace for, so the Pride of Davos destroyed its
shields and impacted the superstructure, while the lances critically damaged
the merchant-class's prow railgun. The Lord Threen was less successful, its
shooting doing nothing. Asp squadron fare a little better, damaging Vigilant's
hull, and crippling the Tau vessel. The Cobra's torpedo salvo slammed into
the Tau vessel, overloading the plasma drives and annihilating the vigilant,
the resulting explosion also took down one of the Pride of Davos's shield as
the turn ended.

Tau: 120 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Imperial: 185 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.

Tau Turn 4
Sensing that discretion was the better part of valor, and seeing a gap in
the blockade, the Bright Sword turned sunward and headed for the edge of the
battlezone.

Imperial Turn 4
Things start off well with Asp Squadron, Lord Threen, and Unbreakable all
going All Ahead Full and moving to the starboard, with Asp Squadron turning
90? sunward to train their weapon batteries on the fleeing Hero-class. The
Pride of Davos Came to a New Heading, taking a parallel course with the
Bright Sword, hugging the planet's gravity well at the end of the move.

Asp Squadron unleashed its weapon batteries to absolutely no effect. As no
other weapons were in range, the turn ended.

Tau: 120 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Imperial: 185 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.

Tau Turn 5
The Bright Sword failed to go All Ahead Full, and so moved its cruising
speed sunward.

Imperial Turn 5
Asp Squadron chased down the Bright Sword, as did the Pride of Davos. His
Will drifted ever onwards, Lord Threen moved in behind the Cobras and turned
sunwards, while the Unbreakable continued to the starboard.

Asp squadron opened fire, but bounced off the Tau shields. The Pride of
Davos did no better with its batteries, and the Tau turrets did enough to
render the Lunar-class's torpedo salvo ineffective.

Tau: 120 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Imperial: 185 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.

Tau Turn 6
The Bright Sword managed to go All Ahead Full and escape via the sunward
edge of the battlezone, ending the battle. The Imperial blockade had been
broken, at heavy cost, but the Emperor's fleet held the field

Tau: 300 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Imperial: 185 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
TAU VICTORY

ENDGAME
Breaking the Imperial blockade meant that the Tau were holding another
system, albeit temporarily. The engagement was enough to earn the Tau Kor'La
a promotion to Kor'Ui (7 Renown, so Ld8 & 2 re-rolls), while the Imperial
Commander was merely commended (4 Renown). The battle forged Discipline
Crews for the Tau Bright Sword and the Unbreakable. Imperial Navy personnel
stationed on Poru'an worked long and hard but were unable to fully repair
the Pride of Davos (It's a hit shy of fully-operation).

For both fleets replacement vessels were dispatched, the Tau gaining the
merchant Vengeful and its accompanying orcas, whilst the Imperium added the
Endurance-class Emperor's Beacon.

For the Tau, the Bright Sword was fitted with a Targeting Matrix, whilst the
Imperials were reinforced by the Mars-class Battlecruiser Indefatigable.

CONCLUSIONS
Phew! That was a hard fought battle and something of a pyrrhic victory for
me in my first game against an Imperial fleet. I think that because of my
prior games with Mike, I'm used to facing Orks, and so under-estimated the
effect torpedoes can have on my vulnerable ships. I think if I were to
re-fight this battle, I'd probably just concentrate my fleet and keep All
Ahead Full-ing to the opposite table edge, relying on my guided torpedoes,
and attack craft from the Hero-class to keep the enemy guns at bay. It's
astounding to me that I won, considering I was down to 1 ship for 3 turns,
luckily for me, Charlie had concentrated on the rest of my fleet and left
the Bright Sword, the one real warship in the fleet this time relatively
unmolested, a mistake I'm sure he'll not repeat when next we fight.

Battlefleet Gothic Campaign Battle 3

In this battle, I'm facing Orks for the first time since leaving Mike behind
in England. The Orks held the initiative for the 1,000 point 'The Bait'
scenario. Unlike the last campaign we took this to mean that the Tau had set
the trap.

The 1,000 point limit meant that the Tau 'Bait' would be 400 points to the
Ork's 700 point attackers, with the remainder of the Tau fleet totaling 600
points. The Tau were bedeviled by Signaling Problems, they felt they could
pull off the trap, even if the Orks were giving No Quarter.

TAU FORCES
Firebird (A Ld 9 Vash'ya-configuration Explorer with Kor'ui [Ld 8, 2
Re-rolls])
Firebird Squadron (3 Ld 9 Orcas)
Peacebringer (A Ld 7 Dal'yth-configuration Merchant with extra hits)
Warlike (A Ld 8 T'olku-configuration Hero)
Bright Sword (A Ld 6 Vash'ya-configuration Hero with Disciplined Crew &
Targeting Matrix)
Green Squadron (3 Ld 8 Defenders)
950 points.

The Bright Sword and Warlike would be a 360pt squadron of Bait.

ORK FORCES
Blasta (A Ld 7 Terror Ship with Torpedo Launchas)
Slaughta (A Ld 6 Kill Kroozer)
Fangz (3 Ld 6 Savages)
Red Wunz (3 Ld 6 Brutes)
Fump Skwadrun (5 Ld Brutes)
660 Points

LAYOUT
The battle took place in the outer reaches of the Sketh'fannor mining
system, an area of space punctuated by a tiny (6cm diameter) planet in the
lower (that is, sunward) central region. In the upper port region was a tiny
gas cloud, a feature that was repeated in the upper starboard. In the lower
starboard were 3 asteroid fields, 2 of which were extremely large.

Tau Deployment
The two Hero-class were deployed centrally and squadroned as per the
dictates of the scenario. The two warships had the planet to their sunward
and were facing to port, hoping the asteroid fields would deter the pursuing
Orks.

Ork Deployment
Sensing safety in numbers, the Orks deployed packed together, with the
Slaughta being the most isolated ship, deployed 2cm above the starboard gas
cloud and a mere 2cm away from the deployment edge. 2cm beneath the gas
cloud and aligned with the Slaughta was the first member of Fump Skwadrun,
with the next two members being in line, but each one 4cm sunward of the
last. The remainder of Fump Skwadrun was deployed in a line with the gaps in
the front trio, but a further 4cm back. Blasta was another 2cm sunward of
the furthest sunward member of Fump Skwadrun, as well as being as close to
the enemy as the scenario would allow. 2cm Sunward of the Kill Kroozer were
the Red Wunz, deployed in the same manner as the front trio of Fump
Skwadrun. This gave an unbroken line of Ork ships from the gas cloud and the
first large asteroid field. 2cm behind the Red Wunz and staggered 4cm
sunward were the Fangz, the only Ork ships not directly facing the port
table edge; instead they were a further 45? away from the sunward edge in
their facing.

Tau Turn 1
The Hero squadron begins the game by Coming to a New Heading, moving to the
port and away from the sun, leaving the Tau warships facing the top edged of
the battlezone, giving a better attack angle for Ordnance launches. 2
Torpedo salvoes were soon flying towards the Ork fleet, albeit at an angle.
Following each torpedo salvo in are 2 waves of Manta bombers.

Ork Turn 1
The greenskins started out aggressively, with everything except the Fangz
going All Ahead Full towards the Hero squadron. With no weapons in range,
all the Orks could do was launch Assault Boats from the Blasta's launch
bays. The first Tau torpedo salvo hit the Slaughta, with three explosions
ripping into the Kill Kroozer's hull. The other Tau torpedo salvo was
destroyed by the turrets of Fump Skwadrun.

Tau: 0 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Ork: 0 Victory Points. Sub-plot incomplete.

Tau Turn 2
The Hero's proved to be unable to Reload Ordnance and turned to close on the
Ork fleet. Despite the shorter distance between fleets, the ion cannon and
railgun still remained out of range. The Torpedo salvo that had damaged the
Slaughta was destroyed in a gas cloud. The Mantas continued to close with
the Orks but fell short of the Brutes, while the Ork Assault boats
approached dangerously close to the Bright Sword

Ork Turn 2
On the second greenskin turn, only the escorts went on All Ahead Full
orders, and the Blasta Reloaded its Ordnance. The Ork fleet was really
getting close to the Hero's now, especially the Bright Sword. With the range
closed, Fump Skwadrun opened fire on the Bright Sword, dropping the Tau
shields. The Red Wunz also fired at the Bright Sword, but were ineffective.
Next up, the Kill Kroozer Slaughta fired on the Warlike, knocking down a
shield. The first wave of Mantas conducted a raid on Fangz, destroying one
of the Savages, while the other Tau bombers were picked off by Fump Skwadrun's
turrets. In the meantime, the Ork assault boats had made an attack run on
the Bright Sword, collapsing the shields and causing a major hull breach.

Tau: 0 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Ork: 0 Victory Points. Sub-plot incomplete.

Tau Turn 3
Sensing that I only had one good turn of shooting before having to bring on
reinforcements, I put the Hero's on Lock On orders, with the Tau ships
opening fire on Fump Skwadrun even as they closed the distance, with ion
cannon fire picking off the sole survivor of the railgun blasts.

Ork Turn 3
For the first time, none of the Ork ships went All Ahead Full, the need to
change course being more pressing. The Red Wunz turned 90? sunward and began
to home in on the Bright Sword. Blasta cruised in and turned towards the
Bright Sword. Also bearing down on the Tau Hero was the Slaughta, while the
two Fangz headed to the port table edge in order to get behind the Tau line.
The Warlike gets hit first; with the Slaughta's gunz knocking down the
shields as the heavy gunz cripple the Tau ship. In the meantime the Red Wunz
prove unable to damage the shield-less Bright Sword. The Blasta repeats the
escorts' performance with its gunz. So the Terror Ship launches Torpedoes at
the Bright Sword, causing the Tau Heroes to Brace For Impact. Unfortunately
for the Orks, the Torpedoes only succeed in detonating one of the Red Wunz
before being shot down by the turrets of the Bright Sword.

Tau: 125 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Ork: 45 Victory Points. Sub-plot incomplete.

Tau Turn 4
With the Tau reinforcements still in reserve, the Hero squadron needed on
more big push against the Orks, so the Tau vessels moved forwards and opened
fire on the Slaughta, the Kill Kroozer is crippled by railgun fire, and then
left as a blazing hulk when the ion cannon add to the fusillade.

Ork Turn 4
The remaining Red Wunz go All Ahead Full in an unsuccessful attempt to ram
the Bright Sword. The Slaughta drifts past the Warlike before a plasma
overload annihilates the Kill Kroozer and the remaining Red Wunz

The Fangz continue towards the port table edge and are now behind the Tau
fleet, but unable to bring weapons to bear. The Blasta successfully Burns
Retros to remain in position to fire on the Bright Sword and promptly lets
loose with its gunz, crippling the Hero-class

Tau: 355 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Ork: 90 Victory Points. Sub-plot incomplete.

Tau Turn 5
With the Hero squadron holding its own, the Tau reinforcements continue to
hang back, while the Heroes reload Ordnance and swing around out of the
Blasta's fire arcs before firing on the Terror Ship, knocking out the shield
and hitting the ship twice, before sending out a wave of Manta's, which
score 6 more hits and damages the engines, while a torpedo salvo finishes
off the Ork vessel.

Ork Turn 5
Wanting something to survive, the Fangz successfully disengage, leaving the
battle.

Tau: 580 Victory Points. Sub-plot completed.
Ork: 90 Victory Points. Sub-plot incomplete.
TAU VICTORY

ENDGAME
The engagement was enough to earn the Tau Kor'ui a promotion to Kor'vre (16
Renown, so Ld 9 & 2 re-rolls), while the Ork Commander thoroughly thrashed
by the boyz (1 Renown). The Hero's were withdrawn for full repairs and would
be unavailable in the next battle, while the Orks successfully repaired the
Fangz as well as gaining the Gutrippa, a Ld 6 Terror Ship with Torpedo
Launchas.

For both fleets replacement vessels were dispatched, the Orks gaining the
Bomba to replace the Blasta, the Slaya to replace the Slaughta, Krump
Skwadrun to replace Fump Skwadrun, and Batta Skwadrun to replace the Red
Wunz.

For the Tau, a new Ld 7 T'olku-configuration Hero was added to the fleet,
the Aggressive

CONCLUSIONS
Wow! The Orks are always entertaining to go against, and the battle felt a
lot closer than it was for the first four turns (I total the VP's while I'm
writing these reports), but I think Bruce was done in by inspired lunacy on
his part, rather than any great tactical genius on my side. The Red Wunz in
particular were unlucky, in that it was entirely killed by friendly fire
(well friendly torpedo and exploding ship, but that doesn't alliterate as
well.). My only real tactical consideration was to keep the reinforcements
off for as long as possible to deny Victory Points to the enemy. Something
that I was able to do for the whole game, as Heroes are just wonderful
warships, though I know now why I don't squadron capital ships unless I
have to, I missed the flexibility of putting them on different special
orders (having to Brace both ships when only the Bright Sword was being
fired on was particularly galling.)

Bring on the Imperials for the Tau's next battle.

I will, in the longtime have 12! more of these, but it's taking a while to transcribe my way-to-old notes into readable form. We shall see.

Very well. I'll keep checking back. Makes me motivated to teach some guys how fun this game was and bust it back out.
