i come from a WFB/40k background and im slowly building up a FOW german army.
in GW games there are some armies that are weaker/stronger then other armies, how is FOW in comparison? is there any dominant army in FOW ?

also how well does the game/armies scale when playing smaller to larger games ? are some armies better at less points then others ?

thanks for advice, im getting into it but will need to convince my friends that its worth their time to play.

Well jeremy, Id say that about 80% to 85% of FOW players came from WFB/40k for many different reasons, cost and the game play were the two big ones. Ive been playing FOW for about a year now and I have to say FOW is one of the most balanced games out there from what Ive seen. They keep the armies fresh with variation and rules incredibly simple. There is no way so compare game to game as they are all goning to be different in some way or another. In FOW there is no stronger or weaker armies compared to each other per-say. A german tank force vs. a russian infantry force may seem lopsided at times but trust me when I say in this game there is a counter for everything. This game is a a much smaller scale compared to other games, which adds greatly to the stategy when playing. In 40k , the scale is too big for the regulation size table you normally play on nd games usually end up with you just "rushing" towards the other player or waiting for the opposing player to rush you. In FOW this is not the case, because of the scale you have a much larger area to cover with not some many models in a normal 1500 point game. So much that during a game, you can easily distinguish the "fronts" and "flanks" on the table that take much more strategy to master. This game is on a much higher tactical level than 40k or WFB and Ive found that the crowd that is attractted to FOW is much more enjoying to play with. So to wrap up I'd say FOW does a great job of producing different, balanced and historical armies that lead to a much larger tactical aspect of gaming. Hope I answered all your questions and let me know if you have any others.

Check out the Intro for Newbie thread right here in the forums for more detail.  I agree 100% with Fitz.  You will not find frustrating army choices that you may want to play but stink on the table top like can happen in 40K.  I never played before and decided I wanted to play armour company.  No play testing, no list crunching, I just made it.  I play a tank company made up of light tanks.  It is very viable on the battlefield.  Does it win every game, no.  Is it very playable, fun, and viable, yes.  In FoW none of the 40K players had any frustrating starts from paper lists to battlefield.  It's all playabe.  So have fun.

Stone.

I guess that depends on who you mean by balanced. Some armies handle certain missions better than others (not impossible, just hard). For example paratrooper forces tend to struggle against armoured forces, especially in a game where the paras can't start dug in (sure, they can dig in first turn and probably succeed, but it's a lost first turn). Motorised infantry in trucks can be a tad weak, but IMO they are still quite playable.

I happen to find playing Soviet infantry immensely frustrating, but that is partly because of my opponents (and also lack there of).

Some forces are easier to play at smaller scales, for example armoured forces by nature of their expensive base units tend to struggle. On the other hand, larger scale lets most armies shine, as they are no longer forced to compromise and you start to see combined arms etc.
