Anyone play it?

Your thoughts on it if you do?

Hmmm.....

I guess with 32 views and no replies nobody likes it.

At any rate, I just picked it up and played a small game with it.

All I have to say is that I love it.

Very cool game, but very different from what the GW crowd here is used to.

Another cool zombie game is Ambush Z by the folks who make Ambush Alley. It also uses a reaction system but focuses more on small units (your guys will fire and move as fire teams of about 4 guys though are individually based).

Both are great games, with lots of solo play opportunity since both systems allow the Zeds to be somewhat run by the system. ATZ maybe a little more so than Ambush Z.

jp400, You could give us a description of it, sort of a review, tell us why it´s cool?

Personally, I´ve never even heard of it, at first I was just thinking "all things Zombie" was a thread about... Zombies..

And yes, I was one of the viewers who had no response.

I´m interested in hearing more though.

All Things Zombie (ATZ) is a ruleset set in modern times that plays alot like GW's Necromunda/Mordheim that pits your band of survivors (Various warbands Include Army, Police, Civilians, Gangs, Survivors ect ect) against a undead horde in Anytown/city you can come up with. However, zombies are not your only threat..... you can run across other groups of survivors that will do anything from joining up with your group, or try to kill you and take your resources.

I personally love the pace/feel for the ruleset. I was playing a all day game a few days ago and not only was it PvP but everyone was trying to fight the zeds at the same time. It had some great moments, like when a shootout was going on between the military and a group of gangers in a diner and about 15+ Zeds were generated/attracted because of all the gunfire. When the Zeds started climbing through the windows and doorway both bands stopped trying to kill eachother and worked side by side to try and kill the oncomming horde..... but it didnt work and they all became lunch. (I still dont know why people love Automatics, they draw so much unwanted attention lol)

Long story shot, for every shot you fire you have a chance to attract/spawn a zombie to the board. Automatics and machine guns attract ALOT of zeds really fast if you roll bad.

Players can set up bases, capture/use resources, get/drive vehicles and do just about anything they want. Ive read about people turning bulldozers into tanks and clearing houses by driving through them, Or Driving a car into a water tower to knock it over on a group of zeds.

Overall its a fun break from the GW grind and doesnt cost a whole lot. I converted some Extra Cadians into Police and some old Plastic Jungle Fighters into Gangers/Milita. For Zeds I use the Bag-O-Zombies. 100 for $10. They are 25mm Scale, but a decayed body is slightly smaller then a normal one, so it all works out.

Arise from the grave oh mighty thread!

Anyways. Sorry for bringing this one back to life, but I thought it would be better than starting an entirely new one about the same thing. This game sounds pretty interesting in theory. But $20 is a lot to drop on a pdf that I may not even like! I was wondering if there was a trial version or something like that. Some way to just get a feel for what the game is like?

Yeah,
If you register on the yahoo group you can download a Vassal program thats compatable with the game. All you need to do then is find someone with the rules.

Sadly though the graphics are pretty darn.... lackluster so dont get too excited over this method.

Ive also played it ALOT more since posting this origionally, and myself and several others love it. Its a welcome change from the 40k grind.

I just bought the rules actuallly, and I love them!!!

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should start a capmaign? I'll probably have about 2 or 3 people playing, and we don't really want to just kill eachother all the time. So I'm not sure how we should organize it/

Here is what I did and it is working out great:
* Have everyone get together and create warbands together. (prevents people cheating) Campaign leader Keep and update army rosters.
* Have a laminated city map thats gridded off so people can keep track of progress, what sectors are controlled by who ect ect.
* Try to be very hands off and let people dictate how they want to play. If people want to ally up and clear a sector together.. let them! If they want to raid another players stronghold for supplies cause they are running out let them! If the group doesnt want to fight eachother its up to them. You will find PLENTY of zeds and Npc's are you go along.

Then again My campaign has 11 people playing it at the moment... and ive stood back and let people decide the ebb and flow and its working out great. If someone gets wiped out they just start over. Alliances have been made, building have been cleared... and everyone is running from the never ending horde of zeds.

I've been messing around with rules for a zombie skirmish game that could function as a campaing (basicly tweeking Mordhiem rules, and adding fire arms ,etc into the mix).
This however looks right up my alley,I'm going to have buy this asap.

@jp400

Please post or pm me a review of this game. I am really close to getting it but I need something to push me over the edge.
Please just give a quick rundown of how it works (no details) the average length of a game, how many people are good to start, how many figures you need, what kind of customization is required, what kind and how mnay buidlings you need, etc??

@ Bodichi:

Here is my quick rundown of the game.

First off, If you order the hardcopy online you will get the PDF version of the rules for free. Makes things very smooth if you are like me and use a laptop with PDF everything for all your game rules. This way when we play the rule book gets passed around while I use my laptop.

The game system is NOTHING like the "I go you go" method of GW's games. Instead everyone uses the "Reaction System." For example:
Our figures start on opposite sides of a building and cannot see each other......
• Dice are rolled and I activate first so I
move first.
• I move my figure around the corner and
our figures see each other.
• You take an In Sight Reaction test.
• Maybe you shoot at me.
• Maybe you shoot at me but rush your
shot.
• Maybe you don’t shoot at me.
• If you shoot me either you hit me or miss.
• If you hit me I see how bad the damage
is.
• Maybe I’m only stunned.
• Or maybe I’m knocked out of the fight or
worse.
• But if you miss I take a Received Fire
Reaction test.
• Maybe I shoot you.
• Maybe I duck back for cover.
• Or maybe I run away.
• We continue to fire back and forth at each
other until either one of us gets hit, runs
out of ammo, ducks back behind cover, or
runs away.
• When all my activations and your
reactions are finished it’s your turn.

With this system you dont just sit idly by as your enemy runs across an open field giving you the finger the whole way. Also every turn you have the option to go first... so it isnt the same person going first every turn for the whole game.... and sometimes the Zeds will go first. Lord help you then.

Length of game for 2-4 players who know what they are doing is around 2 hours. Of course if you are new and learning the rules it will take longer then this... and the more people you add per battle the longer its going to take.

Starting out I recommend at a min of two people, but I must say that the more you have the better the games will be. I recommend at least 3 models per side to start... and you can adjust from there. If your playing a campaign you will usually find quite a few people to join your side... The trick is finding people who are still alive..... For zeds, I just bought a Bag-0-Zombies for the game Zombies! And attached them to spare 28mm bases. For 10-12$ you get 100 zombies... and you will need at least this many if you play with more then 2 people.

Customization is as much as any other skirmish game, and you can do as much or as little as you want. As for buildings and terrain, you can use anything you want really. I built some quick, easy moden buildings out of cork tile for my games.

Here is a site that is kick ass in showing you how to do this for cheap:
http://www.matakishi.com/makingcitybuildings.htm

If you have any more questions I will be more then happy to answer them for you. I really enjoy playing this game with my friends and find that its a welcome change of pace when compared to 40k.

@jp

Thanks for the awesome info. You actually answered a question I didn't even ask. If I get this game I am definetly going to get the hard cover, but knowing that you get the PDF with it is a bonus!

Also the bag o zombies is familar to me and slpping them on 28 MM bases is old hat. My question to you is regarding this is: I used to buy the big bag of 28MM bases from my FLGS but now GW no longer sells bags of all 28MM. Is there any insight you can give me for this as I qould want to base all 100 and I dont feel like having those extra bases.

Second how big of terrain do you think is needed?? 4*4 6*4 2*2??

is it best to have bulidngs that can be gotten into or ones that cannot?

Once I order, how long for the PDF to get to me (I realise the hard cover will take a while)

You said three figures per player so let me know if theses assertions are correct.
In a three player game there would be 9-12 player controlled characters and about 100 zeds??

What weapons are you allowed to equip your characters with and how did you model your characters??

Thank you for your answers so far, it sounds like a lot of fun!

Bodichi,
Not a problem, more then willing to help in any way I can.

Plenty of places online sell 28mm bases in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Gale Force 9 is the place where I shop from at times. Here is the site... have a look around, they have plenty of bases in 25-28mm size.

http://www.gf9.com/store/

For table size I have been useing my normal 40k table and it works out well. For larger games however you may want to bump up the size, cause it will get crowded quick.

For buildings it is best to have buildings that you can access the inside of. However that being said any building with a flat room will work just as good. Just place models that are inside on the roof to represent the fact and your golden.

The PDF was in my e-mail the same day that they processed my payment... Roughly 1-2 business days. Your results may vary, but it was a hell of alot sooner then I was expecting it to be.

Three figures is a good starting point for a campaign. For solo play I find that 3-5 figs works best simply for the fact that you wont really find anyone else that you will be able to keep after the battle. Think of solo play as a standard game of 40k, where as the campaign play is like Necromunda. You fight a battle, and afterwards any injuries/exp... hopefully you found new equipment... ect ect.

Here is a link to my WIP blog for my ATZ military warband:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/244959.page

Also just to give you a heads up... expect zombies and lots of them. At the start of the game each player model generates D6 zeds to start. Then anytime you make any noise above normal you generate D6 zombies... shooting guns, starting cars, a running chainsaw ect ect all attracts the horde. Last game I played we ran out of zombies and were useing spare change to mark zombies.

As for weapons....... here is the basic rundown of the list with examples. Ive heard that you can find expanded weapons in the expansion... but I dont know cause I havent read it yet. Also on the ATZ yahoo group you can find player made expanded item/equipment/weapon lists.

Pistol: Glock, Walther P99, 1911
Big Ass (BA) Pistol: Any hand cannon.... Deagle, Colt Python
Machine Pistol: Mac10, Uzi, Mp5
Bolt Action Rifle: Hunting Rifle, Springfield 1903, Rem 700
Semi Automatic Rifle: M1 garand, M14, Sporting rifles
Assault Rifle: M4, M16, G36c
Shotgun: Spaz 12, Mossberg 500
Squad Automatic Weapon: M249 Saw

1 hand melee: Knife, Crowbar
2 hand Melee: Fire Ax, Shovel
Chainsaw: Chainsaw

Some weapons I didnt list, while some I did/didnt have special rules. For example the Chainsaw needs fuel to run and also attracts 2d6 zeds instead of 1d6 due to constantly running.

The game is great. They have rules to let you do just about anything you want. Want to hotwire a bulldozer, put a brick on the gas and let it eat its way through the horde or a building to create an exit? No problem!

Want to blow up a gas station? Hide out in a mall? Run through the sewers? Not a problem!

I will admit, it took me and my friends several days to work out how the reaction system works fully... but one we did its actually pretty simple to use.

Have fun and hope you dont get eaten!

I just downloaded Chain Reaction 3.0 and tried a couple of solo games. I'm liking it a lot so far. It's a lot more realistic than any other system that I've played. I think the fact that they don't have their own line of miniatures dooms the system to obscurity forever, unfortunately.

Hmm...
Havent played CR 3.0, but ATZ is based off of it I hear.

CR 3.0 is just a simplified version of all of their other rules. Your army choices are gangs, insurgents, military and police. You have very basic weapon choices. It's basically just a way for people to learn the reaction system and decide whether or not they like it before they have to buy anything.

I got the rules last week and have been playing some solo games. It's very well thought out and the solo rules are excellent. The campaign rules really add a lot to the game. After a few games to familiarize myself started a campaign today. I ran my group into a city. I managed to fight my way through the zombie horde and then lure them into an alley. That gave me free reign to start looting the buildings as long as an unexpected event didn't alert them to my position. I ran into 4 groups of gangers. I traded with 1 of them, another decided to join me for the game and the other two joined me permanently.

I quickly learned the perils of hand to hand when I started entering zombie filled rooms and I elected to melee rather than shoot. I charged one zombie with a rep 5 with a 2 handed weapon and brawler, a rep 4 with knifeman and a knife and a rep 5. 18 dice vs 1...and the zombie won taking out my knife man.

After the battle the two people who went down during the game became zombies. After that I had a mutiny. My star killed the guy and 5 others from the group snuck away that night. That left me with the same number in my group that I started with and most of them were better. My star gained a point of rep to make him rep 6 and a couple of the lower rep group members gained a rep. All in all it was a pretty good start to a campaign.

I learned a thing or two in the few games that I've played.

- Hand to hand is dangerous. Even if your opponent only gets 1 dice and you have 20 it's still possible for him to beat you.

- If you're in the city avoid shooting as much as possible. If you're in a rural area shoot as much as you want to. The risk of hand to hand is worth it in the city. In the country you should avoid it.

- Zombies aren't that hard to herd. When the numbers become unmanageable just herd them into an area and stop shooting.

- After the battle can be just as dangerous as during the battle. You have to check if your members decide to stick around or not. It's really easy for even a low rep character to mutiny. I could see a bad round of rolls completely destroying an entire campaign for a player. You need to set up a base asap because it confers a pretty big bonus.

-Make sure that you fulfill all of the successful mission objectives. Your entire group will quickly be reduced to a bunch of gibbering crybabies if they keep having unsuccessful missions.

Glad to see you are enjoying the game. Some things that I have found that work well:

* When entering a building, leave a couple of guys just ouside the door. This way if things go south inside you wont lose your entire team in one turn. (Had this happen once) Plus they can rush in to support the people inside.

* If you get a character with some of the movement perks, name him "The Pied Piper" and use him to herd the zed horde away from objectives

* A man on a roof with a clear lOS armed with bolt action rifle and the skill Marksman is a godsend. If you are useing the user created gear update throw on a Silencer and this man is GOLD!

* Outside longterm campaign play, vehicles are just about pointless. They eat up Lots of resources to keep running, and as time marches on gas gets very hard to find. We just ignore the time rules for travel. (still working on something else to replace this)

* Never EVER use the SAW in the city unless you have no other option. It will mow down a horde pretty quick, however it will summon 2 for every 1 you kill in the city on average.

@JP

I am building some of those really excellent paper buildings. My questions though is how do you make the minis go inside, and what is the room shaped like once in there?

Made in us
Longtime Dakkanaut

@Bodichi:
You can build em so that the roof is removeable, so you can physically fit inside... or build em with a flat roof and use the roof as a "Counts as" for inside.

As for inside, if I understand you correctly you can make it however you want. If you want 3d insides you can find all kinds of hobby accessories to stuff inside, or if you want to save some money you can make it 2D and print off a footprint with floor graphics on it.

Please feel free to post WIP pics of your buildings, id love to see what other people do.

I have been making the paper buildings out of the printouts glued to manila folders and then glued together. As you may have guessed they are not vey heavy and the baseses warp. What would you suggest making the base out of?
