Well, my Blood Ravens army sits at a proud 2,000 points, and doesn't want to budge. That's fine, I'm quite happy with them that way.

So my thoughts turned to my next army. Decisions, decisions...

I had formed in my mind a Dreadnought based army, mostly due to the fact that was Marines go, they are pretty iconic, and utterly awesome.

So I have this kind of dialemme in my head.

Space Wolves new codex is coming someday soon, apparantly. A Dreadnought as the HQ is absolutely awesome, and I could probably take 3 more as Elites.

On the flipside, Blood Angels Furioso Dreadnoughts are inexpensive for their use, and a Venerable upgrade is a mere 20 points. Taking three of them can cause much havoc.

Equally, Codex Astartes Marines can take the Master of the Forge, and have 6(!!) Dreadnoughts, causing no end of mayhem. Ironclad looks nice, and their normal Dreads are sweet too. Shame about the cost on the Venerable...

So, fine people of Dakka, I ask of you. Which of the these three should I use for the greatest amount of Walker mayhem? I'd also prefer my army to be Assault based, as I have an incredibly shooty Blood Ravens, so some slice and dice would be awesome.

Regards
Jimmy

Then go with Black Templars they dont even make any sense. Their horde based assault army.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

If you want assaulty Dread heavy, go space wolves. 4 Dreadnaughts and Blood Claws FTW

Somewhere.

Remember, bar Venerable ones the Space Wolves get the option to take either of the vanilla Dreadnaughts...so I reckon a pair of Space Wolves Venerable Dreads with a air of Ironclads are gonna cause certain issues for other armies.

Otherwise I'd Master of the Forge six of them in for a laugh.

I like both of these ideas.

I'm leaning towards Space Wolves, if they can indeed take Ironclads. Is that confirmed for the new codex?

I dont think they can take ironclads currently.

I believe the FAQ/Errata states that you can use the new C:SM for any vehicle from C:SW. The Ironclad is listed in the Dreadnought section, but listed as a separate unit in the Army section. Which one takes precedence?

It doesn't specifically mention Ironclads. It has listed a couple of vehicles, though.

Still, who knows what the new codex will bring?

EDIT: Woop, it does mention it allows all variants of those vehicles. So looks like they *can* take Ironclad. Still, you never know what the Sons of Russ will get in the new 'dex.

Yeah, since it mentions variants you can grab Ironclads...at least that's how I'm reading it. I don't play Wolves though, so maybe one of there more experienced players can confirm that.

But the new codex might stop that, so...it might be safer to grab Vanilla stuff and Master of the Forge it up.

Well, if you want Ironclads anyway. If you want regular ones it's not a huge issue.

If BA had a more current codex, I would vote for them, but as it stands I would say space puppies are the safer bet. Their codex should be released by the end of the year, right? If you started collecting now you could have a decent force by then, and be one of the first kids on the block to put down a SW army when the new codex drops.

more is ALWAYS better, especially if you're doing assault based. You take 6 dreds w/MoF and back 'em up with another 3 vanguard and BAM there's your assault army.

O H I am in the Webway...

Space Wolves and droppod the whole army. Grey Hunters are the best marines you can buy (except for grey knights, but they are 25 point a piece...) Put a meltagun and a PW in 3 Grey Hunters squads and give their WGBL a TH/Combi-Melta and the dreads + an Iron Priest in droppods and you got it.

My friend runs the 6 iron clad list and it is absolutely brutal. AV 13 on a walker causes my poor str 8 fists endless headaches.

I think its probably the most competitive of the 3 options and can field the most dreadnaughts.

In name only. They claim it is updated for 5th but they lack a lot of the upgrades that their vanilla cousins got. Their storm shields are still only provide a +4 invul. save in CC, rather than current SM codex shield that conveys a 3+ invul in all situations. Their LRs do not have assault ramps (though FAQ says you can treat it as such) and their venerable dred does not have the increased BS and WS like the vanilla SM counterpart. Furthermore, captains also suffer from fewer wargear options and a reduced WS skill as opposed to regular marines.

And you can download the codex on GW's website, it is not only in WD.
