Greetings, all!

I first got into Warhammer 40K playing Orks when someone bought Assault on Black Reach and my friend gave me the discarded Ork half of the set. I've been playing Orks for almost a year and loving every minute on it!

So, I went and bought my own Assault on Black Reach earlier this month. While at a hobby shop, I happened to see a Battle For McCragge, and it was cheap, so I picked it up.

Nao I haz Spase Mareenz!! Hur hur!

So, here's the thing. At first, I decided to play as vanilla Ultramarines, but then I wondered... Hey, screw that sanctimonious crap! I loved Orks for their free-wheeling, raucus joy and fun! Why can't I create my own chapter and have them be like the Dirty Dozen or The Devil's Brigade?

I got the 5th Edition SM Codex. Even though it is much thicker, it doesn't have all the special rules that grant advantages and flaws to each individual chapter. It granted you the ability to customize your own chapter using these special rules.

So, my question is this: Aside from Grey Knights, Black Templars, and any other chapter with a codex of its own, do all Space Marines play with generic Ultramarines rules?

Oh, yeah. My idea? The Fighting Hellfish!

Your commander is bald and bears a striking resemblance to Kelsey Grammar, doesn't he?

Check up GW's site for online codex for Blood Angels and some other chapters, maybe you can base your unit off of one of those.

No, because you have Special Characters that drastically alter the way an army plays. You can use them as "Counts as", i.e. Using their Rules with a different model.

Well, the codex says, "Alternatively, you can use the model and rules for a named character to represent a mighty hero of a different chapter."

Errrm... yes that's exactly what I said. You can, for example, use the Raven Guard Special Character as Captain BobJim of the Fighting Fishhells. As long as your opponents know "Oh he is Shrikes rules", it's all kosher.

As for "generic Ultramarines rules", you need to remember that Codex: Space Marines is used to represent just that, Ultramarines and other codex chapters (along with the 1st founding ones that don't deviate as much as say the Blood Angels or Space Wolves)

Ah. I misunderstood. My apologies.

What if I said "generic Space Marines" rules? Anything in the codex that specifically says, "Ultramarines get X," I would not get X.

Well, that's not how the codex works. You get everything. And even if it said "Ultramarines get x" you can just say "I am Playing Ultramarines but with a different Paintjob" and noone could say otherwise.

I guess what I am trying to say here is, Go for whatever colour scheme/fluff you want, you will be able to use everything in the codex you want to use, including any and all Special Characters (You Can Include Calgar and Vulkan together if you really wanted, for example, so don't sweat it)

Simplest answer is best. Thank you kindly!
