Is it just me or is dakka's fluff section a joke?

It seems that this section has been riddled with nothing but junk. Most of these topics have very little to do with the intense lore that makes 40k so bad ass. There are books upon books and years upon years of time invested in creating this universe. Why is it then, people spend so much time asking stupid, pointless and annoying questions? "Are STDs gifts from Slaanesh or Nurgle?" Are you people serious? First off, STDS typically inhibit sexual intercourse (read: pleasure) thus denoting any involvement with Slaanesh, but its also a DISEASE! SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE! What is Nurgle's thing??? Granted, fierce followers of Slaanesh live for stimulation of all senses. Painful or not. However, Nurgle's diseases are so terrible that people cry out to him for a release from the torment. Also, the worst infections eventually go numb, this is something that a follower of Slaanesh would detest! Come on people! Why are these posts allowed to exist? Do people get chuckles from these topics?

Another pointless thread is "Peace?". This post is about a supposed "peace" in the 40k universe and what it would be like. It brought forth some boring and thoughtless responses. Who honestly wants to speculate about "peace". In the grim darkness of the future there is only WAR! Its warhammer for a reason, I cant honestly believe you guys like discussing about Tau and Chaos followers putting aside their differences to hold hands and work things out. To me, its like asking what a fire would be like without oxygen or fuel. Am I the only one that found this to be a half-assed forum post? why not discuss the symbolism behind Erubus' name? or the awesome events of "the flight of the Eisenstein" and how it leads up to the founding of the Inquisition! have you people even read these books? Is the lexicanum where you people get all of your lore?

I honestly think most of the garbage posted under "40k Fluff for Nutters" should be moved to a new section called "banter that barely involves 40k"

I can see how I could come of like that. Truly, Its more disappointment. I joined Dakka Dakka mostly for the mature community. I love how its a multicultural community that can unite to discuss a beloved hobby. Its a beautiful thing. I just don't think this section holds up to that sort of standard. In fact, I expected more out of the "fluff for Nutters" crew then the rest of community. I honestly think that "40k fluff for nutters" has become more of a cesspool than a intelligent gathering for those who have read the books or codexes and care to reflect on them. Its asking alot, I know, however, I have a feeling this community is cable of handling something of that magnitude.

Well we like to questions things GW never bothers to answer. They've never explained STDs or the lives of ordinary people in their worlds.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I agree with that. However, there are so questions that are blatantly silly, or just plain immature.

You can gather little bits about people's lives outside of warhammer from the books aswell. Look at the remembrances and their take on the events of the Horus heresy.

topics like "you've know you've played too much warhammer if..." or sly marbo chuck norris remakes. just dont sit well with this section. There needs to be a more dedicated section to that sort of silliness. Im not a complete hermit, I do find that stuff funny once and a while. However, it seems 40k has become nothing but a stagnant pool. A reservoir of posts that don't exactly fit under any of the other headers.

Something I disagree with is the idea of a perpetually GRIMDARK 41st millennium. 12-year-olds think it's awesome that everyone's always fighting and killing each other, but more mature gamers like to look at the 'normal' and emotional side of things. I mean, look at some of the work that (surprisingly) comes out of 4chan's Traditional Games section, such as this one, which is quite emotional really. I mean, a lot of 40K novels are sort of... flat. Not much character at all. The Fantasy novels tend to be better, particularly those about characters you don't hear about much, like the Sigmarite Witch Hunters.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

My friend, that is an ad hominem abusive logical fallacy. You cannot imply someone is immature because they like the constant fighting and killing. Likewise, you cannot conclude that I do not consider the "norm" or the emotional involvement or anything other then violence that occurs in the 40k universe.. I merely stated that there has been a lack in quality and direction in current trend of posts.

It's probably always been that way (even before I brought my magnificent self to this forum), because Dakka is more of a competitive site. Fluff for Nutters is like the 'Drop your pants and relax' forum.

From my experience Dakka is a much more rules foccused site than fluff, + the painting and modelling sections aren't bad either even if they're a bit behind warseers.

If you want to tlak about fluff go to HO where theres a more active fluff section, or the black library forums which is probably your best bet for the more in depth stuff.

In part i agree with the original poster in that threads that have nothing to do with Fluff of 40K should ideally not be in the Fluff section. I myself created what has been a very successful and thankfully on topic thread titled "You know when you play 40K to much when..."

Reason I posted in the Fluff forum? Because at the time it didn't seem to belong in any of the other forums.

Thankfully we now have a new forum called "General Discussion" where stuff like this and others can be posted and kept out of the Fluff section. So hopefully we should start to see a little less non fluff related articles in future in this section. ( I for one am suprised my own thread hasn't been moved there even though the 40K humour was "shrugs")

I agree with the OP. But i disagree with his examples. Both of those are purile, but quite valid fluff questions. Even if they are a bit silly.

What is NOT a fluff question is "You know you play too much 40k when..." threads, or joke threads about Marbo, Spase Marien Recruitment, etc. I'm not saying we CAN'T joke around, but joke threads aren't Fluff questions. We need a separate 'stupid joke' section.

I really like the Fluff section, but i think it's gone really downhill over the last few months...

True, however, I dont think the op's goal was to get at the meaty fluff behind STDS, but rather some cheap giggles. I for one have had some questions regarding Astartes' physiology. Do they no longer have male genitalia? Or do they merely lose any desire for sex during the Geno initiation program? It seems like keeping those organs would be a waste of resources for a machine / creature that has been built only for war. Something that supports my theory is the Emperor's Children course of action during the Maraviglia. Rather than slithering into the massive orgy that occured in response to the music; they started butchering everyone. I believe this is because they couldn't join in. However, Julius Kaesoron felt something for Bequa Kynska, a feeling that he had never before felt for a mortal. Who knows, maybe Fabius Bile solves their issue later on.

cadbren wrote:Nice bitch fuzz, now how about starting a topic on 40K fluff and help lead us heathens to the Emperor's light.

Now that I have had a chance to look back on what I wrote, I was in fact "bitching". I just wanted to see if other people shared my concerns and then from there, formulate a method to deal with the issue. If it turns out that people are fine with the state of 40k fluff for nutters, Ill cease my complaints. This is not the case, It seems the general populace would rather a separation between the silliness and a more serious section. That is not too much to ask. Is it?

Have to agree with ArbitorIan on this one...

No, I haven't heard the story of the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White Bike. Please tell me the story.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Isn't posting this a bannable offence? Anyway:

There once was a Black and White Space Marine on a Black and White bike, and being the hero type person he was, wanted to marry the Chapter Master's daughter.

So he went up to the palace and the guard naturally enquired "Who goes there?", to which he replied "I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter".

"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?" asked the guard, with a not unconsiderable amount of awe in his voice.

"Yes, I'm *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."

"OK, pass."

So the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike proceeded up to the commander's chamber.

"Who goes there?" Asked the commander.

"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry your daughter," replied the Black and White Space Marine.

"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"

"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."

"OK, if you complete three tasks, you may take my daughter's hand in marriage."

The commander told the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike. "Your first task is to slay the dragon on Xylon III."

On his way out the guard once again asked "Who goes there?", to which he replied
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter."

"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"

"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."

"OK, pass."

The Black and White Space Marine then proceeded with ease to kill the dragon and six months later returned with the head of the foul beast.

On his way into the palace the guard enquired "who goes there?", to which he replied
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter".

"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"

"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."

"OK, pass"

So the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike proceeded up to the commander's chamber.

"Who goes there?" Asked the commander.

"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry your daughter" Replied the Black and White Space Marine.

"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"

"Yes,*the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."

"OK, if you complete three tasks, you may take my daughter's hand in marriage" The commander told the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike. "Your second task is to climb the highest peak on Desgrus Beta".

On his way out the guard once again asked "Who goes there"?", to which he replied
"I'm the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike and I want to marry the commander's daughter".

"Not *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike?"

"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike."

"OK, pass."

The Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike easily climbed the mountain and returned 4 years later.

"OK, pass."

"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike.

"OK, if you complete three tasks, you may take my daughter's hand in marriage" The commander told the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike. "Your third and final task is to swim across the acid lake outside the palace".

"OK, pass."

Once again the Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike easily completed his task and returned to the palace for the final time.

"OK, pass."

"Yes, *the* Black and White Space Marine on the Black and White bike, can I marry your daughter now?"

"Sure."
