I believe they are in the same way the Necrons are based on Lovecraft and undead.

It's elements from mecha and giant robots thrown in a blender with a bit of GW's usual hair-band styling.

I like the idea of the Tau in the setting. It's not ebcause they're "good guys" but because they think they are good guys. They're trying to stay above the general filth that is civilization in the 40k setting but they're going to have to cave in if they want to survive. The Tau empire is a little thumbprint in Imperial space that won't last long if they every truly tick off the Imperium or any other threat, but they aren't quite willing to sink to the Imperium's level. They're certainly an empire, but only a bit malevolent.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

They are closer to American robot stuff than anime. The armor of Tau firewarriors and their water caste members do go back to Tokugawa era fashion for Japan but the rest simply isint.

Tau miniatures were designed to display the high-tech science fiction and robotic concepts that had resulted in the choosing of the Tau as the new army-race. The reflection of the Tau's high-technology status was reflected by the lack of cabling and links modeled onto the weapons; instead it was decided that these components were internally integrated. The Tau Infantry models, according to sculptor Jes Goodwin, were designed to have subtle influences taken from Chinese foot soldiers, while the Battlesuits and vehicles drew from anime style exo-suits[1]. The Tau vehicles are 'skimmers', however, the design brief specified that the Tau Tanks have an impression of being heavier and more solid than the Eldar Grav-tanks.[6]

Yes they are based on anime, that was the entire point of the race. To be something non gothic inspired that runs against the main themes of the previous armies.

That is obvious considering the fact that they didn't have hovertanks and mechs back then.

I read somewhere that the problem with the Tokugawa Mechs was the suit was too bulky to fire a bow or swing a sword. Oh, sure, it was all nice and full to fly around, but they couldn't effectively wield any weapons. If only they had developed the mini-gun to go with it...........

Tau are obviously influenced by Anime. It's not the first time GW has plagarized another source (and it's not the last either, or even the best). To me, this is like asking, "Are Space Wolves influenced by the pop culture version of Vikings?"

And frankly, it was a good move on their part. It really capitolized on a market that their game currently didn't appeal to.

It still doesn't really appeal to the japanese markets.

So true, so true

As for me I would move towards agreeing with them bieng slightly anime related. I mean when I think of anime and that kind of thing my mind instantly jumps to gundam and armoured core. Granted their are elements that arent, a few elements that are way off anime. But you cant not look at a battlesuit and not picture some japanese guy with gravity defying hair inside it

Because Tau 's designs are major failure ( codex art work are ok , but .... finished sculpts looks nothing like it )

If the current Tau looks like the FW ones, im sure they'll be way more attractive to the customers.

dietrich made a very nice comparison btw . unfortunately there will always be die hard grimdark 40k fans that will reply:
"vikings dont have plasma gun or power armors! and they arnt 8 feet tall! " etc etc ( example from the other thread with Tau compared with Rifts )

Nah. If you like giant robots and modelling in Japan GW would be so far down your list of priorities it would register as much of a signal as that fly at the end of the "the fly."

"buy meeee, buuuy meeeee"

Tamiya is EVERYWHERE here and soooooo much cheaper than GW that it makes me cry a little. And they have a popular and well known ongoing story to drive sales whereas GW is very, very niche.

Of my experience of playing Japanese players what sells here is space marines, space marines, chaos space marines, more space marines and 1 guy with dark eldar i.e. stuff that can't be bought cheaper and better from a Japanese company and that is unique to 40K.

Hell, one guy even converted and painted his marine chapter into Gundam. Honestly it is awesome. He put little wings and gundam heads on his assault marines and converted the landspeeders to look like core landers.

Tau don't sell here. They appeal more to western fans of anime that already have an interets in 40k.

Actually, as a Ken-Jutsu student, I would argue that they are Kodachi, rather than a suicide blade. The length is wrong.

Kodachi 小太刀 is longer than this . Tanto being the shortest.

Forever alone

If I may nitpick?

If you're calling a suicide blade a seppuku knife, isn't that the wrong name for it? Wouldn't it be a hara-kiri knife, since hari-kiri is a Japanese term for 'belly cut' or suicide?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I already gave the name for it " Tan To" many times.

Its just dakka always make fun of the word seppuku example ( the fishmen thread with madnessepukkuspartan ) stuff.

To be very very specific , Tan ( gut / short ) To ( knife ) is directly related to seppuku ( sep = slice ) ( pu = stomach )

To be even more specific , japanese have their regional dialect compared to kanji ( where its actually written and recorded)

your 腹切り is related to how they "say" it . seppuku written as : 切腹 ( noticed exact same kanji but in different order? ) Is the official written kanji

Just wiki it , saves me time to explain -_-

Long story short: Japan originally dont have written letters but they have speech.
Chinese introduced their letters (kanji ) which had their original pronunciation. Which was then semi integrated into their spoken language.
In other words Japanese have actually 3 languages : Original dialect , hybrid with kanji , and kanji pronounciation .

In the picture of the Tau you have up there, the blade length is roughly equivalent to that of a Kodachi. Or so it appears to me. A Kodachi is usually about 26 inches in length altogether, including the grip.

The one the Tau is carrying there seems to possess a longer handle as well, another trait of a Kodachi.

Its perspective , look at the Fire Warrior picture , the one on the right side (holding helmet ) Look at the size of his hands compared to the blade length.

The blade appears to be of an equivalent length to his helmet.
It may or may not be a kodachi, but I'd postpone final judgment until I saw a clear view of one of these blades.
As things stand though, I'd say it resembles a Kodachi enough in terms of physical characteristics to be treated as one.

I still don't understand why Tau FW have swords when they suck so much in CC. I mean, their tactics never even involve close combat, only firepower. Why do they have swords then? Fashion?

See Onimusha 4.

Silly me, I´ve been thinking all this time that Tau was another Greek letter plundered by GW because it´s popular with astronomers for calling planets and stars... it really comes from the Tao religion/philosophy that probably nobody at the GW Studio ever heard about.
