With the new rules, the Chimera offers the option to have 5 models firing from the top hatch, if I'm not mistaken (don't have my Codex or rulebook at hand for a couple of days unfortunately)
When the model first came out, you had six shots, three to each side. This was represented nicely by the six lasguns sticking out of the hull. But those have become completely obsolete with the current rules.
So I've been thinking about not having them on the model, replacing them with either an armour plate (fluff value only) or extra strapped on equipment (camo net, sandbags,...).

Would you object to a Chimera modeled in this way? I find it mildly disturbing that you have three guns pointing to one side while you can fire five in random directions.

I think the idea of 5 shooters is that 3 fire from the lasgun slots, and 2 from the top hatch.
this is because the gun slots can only fire in 1 direction, so cannot fire at the same target unless surronded. (the the hatch cannot really fit 5 models out of it)

As to the OP question, no i wouldnt object. (and i dont think anyone could really)

some of my vet squads shoot an autocannon and 3 plasma guns out of there chimera hatch at 360 degrees . so yes i would say the lasguns are effectivly ignored now. Ive modeled a couple without the lasguns. adding equipment, sandbags and ammo netting are a nice way of doing that.

I'm thinking of modeling gun slits where the las guns are, so it represents people shooting out still.

I just left the lasguns off my chimeras and left the portholes. I considered covering up the holes with a track section (you should have leftover pieces that cover it perfectly) but thought people might mistake that for extra armor.

I agree to lose the lasguns - they look bad.

I removed all the lasguns on mine and put a square of plastic card on the inside of the port holes. I hated those thing rattling about and ending up pointing all random directions and even upsidedown.

I would imagine a little plasticard and a punch-die set (and some putty) would clean it up easily.

Just scale up a project like this:

Personally, i'm leaving mine on, as they might be used again in future editions...

But the fluff value as far as I know (not all THAT read up on it, to be fair) is poor, as they're supposed to be slits, not emplaced lasguns. (at least on vallhallan chimeras they are).

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

Yup, I remove the lasguns and leave the portholes, so they still represent firing slits...

Has anyone got any pictures? I want to see how it looks like before I start assembling my two new chimeras.

glue 'em up without doing the back panel or the guns?
you'd be able to get a good idea what they look like, and still have access to glue the guns on if you wanted them, I think.

This is a frontal view, but you can see the ports. I also cover up the tracks with platicard cause I can't stand the exposed treads.

BTW, here is what I do with the chimera lasguns- they go on my sentinels as close defense guns:

Thanks for all the replies guys
I'll definitely leave the lasguns off. As I'll have more than one Chimera, I could do some with extra equipment and some with gunslits.

Does anyone else have a picture of them as just open holes on the side that are used as firing ports? Also, has anyone tried painting them as windows? Finally Stecal, how did you put that plastic card behind the ports? Can you take a closer up picture. I am thinking of getting rid of all the guns since they are useless and honestly tend to break off anyways.

in the new IG codex it says ALL models fire from the top hatch. this essentially makes the built-lasgun ports non functional but they still look cool.

Because 3 guys can fire meltas from the top hatch at once.
But hey, means I kill tanks damn easily, so not complaining.

does anyone have a picture of a Chimera painted that has no guns and just open port holes? Also does anyone have pictures of a painted Chimera that has the portholes painted as glass or something unique?
