Quick question for the dakkaites out there – what is the definition of ‘pro painted’? I, perhaps foolishly, considered pro meant painted to a ‘professional’ standard – at least table top, if not higher. However, after buying some models on ebay that were described as pro painted, I now wonder if ‘Pro Painted’ means “Painted by a Crack Addicted Prostitute”. (Please note I bought them cheaply, I actually *looked* at the pictures and knew what I was buying – this is just a bit of a rant as to how misleading the term is).

Seriously, I count my own work as table top quality at best, and am thrilled to get 6’s and 7’s for votes on my models on this forum (I consider 8+ means pro, and 10 is Golden Daemon standard). But even my modest efforts could wipe the floor with some ‘pro painted’ Ive seen on ebay.

Seeing some of the amazing work on this site and others (CMON), I feel the prevalence of ‘pro painted crap’ out there, makes it more difficult for actual quality to be found amongst the dross.

Am I unreasonable in my frustrations? Am I alone?

Ive had a little too much caffeine today, maybe I just need a lie down…

Well, technically "pro painted" means painted by someone who gets paid for their painting services. However, did you ever take the time to consider that the ebayer may simply have been lying in the description of the item?

A trend that I'm seeing more and more on ebay is use of the description "studio painted" to describe something that has been painted by professional painters.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

From http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/A_Guide_to_Selling_Miniatures_on_Ebay#A_Note_on_%26quot%3BPropainted%26quot%3B_Miniatures

A Note on "Propainted" Miniatures

"Propainted", to me (and MANY other people I know/have talked to), is the first sign to skip that auction. Everybody and their mother thinks their stuff is "propainted" and they list it as such. Generally, I have found that either;

* The seller is lying. He put "propainted" in the title to garner more hits.
* The seller is stupid. The models are not very good or table-top standards at best. Either way, I can paint better than most "propainted" auctions I see. I am no where near a "pro."
* The miniature is actually painted to standard that exceeds most people's skill with a brush. This truly is a professional-looking paintjob.

In all three cases, "propainted" is a death sentence for your auction, in my book.
[ed:Emphasis mine] Even in the third case above, the model is likely too expensive to be worth it for me. I prefer to paint my own stuff anyway!

I to am rather upset when clicking on an item on any site that is labeled "pro painted",most sellers as afore mentioned do this to get more people looking at their product.I have found models that I am sure a lunatic painted as it looks awful, but it is still labeled "pro painted" and I am rather shocked that these sometimes can be bought for alot.

technically, the phrase 'pro painted' offers nothing about the quality of the work. It simply means the person is formally trained ( in this case, a rarity) or compensated financially (obviously, this part's true) for their work. We infer that since they do it professionally, they are likely to also provide quality. Look at professional contractors: just because they're professional doesn't always mean they're worth the money

But yes, misleading auction titles are rather unfortunate. They may as well start advertising "free base with every purchase!" to entice prospective buyers.

lol!

On my recent auction (and Ive bought a lot recently, some painted, some not) I always intended to strip the models anyway - so painting quality was irrelevant. It just bugged me.

As a side rant, Ive bought some very badly assembled stuff on ebay too - including a rhino that was assembled by a ADHD 6 year old who clearly hates models. I managed to hack it back into a semblance of usefulness - but I thank the 4 gods that I collect chaos, cos nurgly greenstuff covers a lot of sins

You think thats bad ,

i've seen some auction that includes "forge world" tag in their sales when there is absolutely 0 FW items in it.

Cheap gimics thought up by desperate sellers with no integrity. Like vahallan said , its death sentence for the auction . You are driving 99% of the customers away in hope of fishing in 1% of the dumb ones that will fall for it.

Dumb, or simply inexperienced. A new starter to the game could get a very bad experience unfortunately falling foul of this type of misleading marketing.

Well, eBay is buyer beware. While it's unfortunate, and I don't condone everyone listing their crappy painted minis as "pro panted", I would also hope the buyer would use some form of common sense before shelling out $100 for a pro painted POS.

are easily seperated. I have seen many so called pro painted armies that give you wide angle shots and no close ups at all. You really do have to pay attention to these things on EBAY.
