Well as the title suggests, I'm looking for a new army to play with this summer. My two top choices are SM and IG. I have a small army of SM already, but I wanted to start another chapter and make a more competitive force. On the other hand, I wanted to start IG since I've waited so eagerly for the new codex. Plus, I love their tanks and how the general army is laid out with mass infantry coupled with vehicles.
What do you gust suggest I do for my second playable army? I'm planning to put a lot of time and effort into this, so it's a pretty important choice for me.

Why would you play IG when there are so many wonderful SM chapters? There's the Blue Space Marines (who are the best Space Marines), Angry Red Space Marines Who Flip Out, Grey Viking Furry Space Marines, Shiny Grey Space Marines With Pointy Sticks And Guns Of Space Demon Killing, and Dark Green Space Marines Who Wear Dresses And Have Questionable Sexual Orientation.

And that's just to name a few, hurr.

well, I play both SM and IG, and in general I find the IG to be more fun. There are also more ways you can go to convert them, paint them, and come up with interesting backgrounds.

SM are going to be a lot cheaper, of course.

That's actually one of the reasons why I haven't chose SM right away. There's so many chapters to choose from! I could make my own, but I'm not really up to it. I'm sure SM are prettier to look at then IG, but playing with them is something I haven't tried yet. So it could be new and exciting! They suit my play style better as well, actually. The scale is leaning toward the Guard!

Why don't you do a happy-medium? Then you can have Blue Boy Scout Guardsmen, Angry Red Guardsmen Who Flip Out, Grey Viking Furry Guardsmen, Shiny Grey Guardsmen With Pointy Sticks And Guns Of Space Demon Killing, and Dark Green Guardsmen Who Wear Dresses And Have Questionable Sexual Orientation.

I'm not into the mainstream chapters that much.
And what do you mean by "happy-medium?"

You are already leaning towards IG so go with it. If you have the money play what you like. I assume you already did some research and just wanted some opinions. I was on hiatus for a long time from this game. Now that I am back I chose to update my favourate of my three armies that I have.

Yeah, I'll proably go ahead and start a new IG army! That being said, what should I look into buying first? (besides the codex and battle force) I wanted to make a "big guns" type army with a few mobile elements here and there.

To start that IG army, no matter what, you'll need some Guardsmen models, and eBay is your friend here. You can get good deals on eBay. I'd look for at least 80 Guardsmen in the army, preferably 100 or more.

Beyond that, season to taste.

I have both (IG my first and by biggest), and both armies give you a lot of options and conversions

However, IG takes more money, more time, and they're harder to paint. But IG also gives you more variety in composition (SM has variety but not as much imo).


Just realize that if you go IG, you are going to be painting a LOT of men
