I had an interesting discussion at my FLGS the other day. The consensus is that 2000 points is the most balanced point level for 40k games. Would you agree? Do nob bikers that dominate at 1750 have a harder time at 2000 points?

PROSECUTOR: By now, there have been 34 casualties.

2000 points is just a sweet spot of all armies.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

2000 is nice because there are enough dice rolls that everything ends up performing somewhere close to how it should. In small games, single dice rolls can decide the outcome. For example: My commander just failed his 2+ armor save from a grot. Darn.

2000 points is also manageable but still large enough to use more of what you want in terms of elites, fast attack and heavy support

2000 points is awesome for Space Marines you can take 3 Landraiders and 3 squads of Terms and still have points left over for plenty of troops.

I like 1850 alot. Like alot, alot. 2000 is practically the same thing though. I like higher point games because opponent's tend to get sloppy and start wasting points on big stuff.

2000 pts is a handicap for Dark Eldar. Not that you see them often enough to know =P

After around 1500 pts you start running out of HQ, Troop, heavy, and elites spots, and lets face it DE fast attack options blow (which is really an Irony when you consider how fast the army is....)

2000 points is great, my personal favorite. It gives other armies more ways to deal with Nidzilla, Nob Bikers, dual lash chaos, etc. all armies that peak at 1500.

But honestly, the most even games I have played are at 1,000. Less room to squeeze the cheese after mandatory HQ and troops. Even nob bikers have trouble as they only have one squad on the table and that one squad fails a tank shock or morale check of any kind and its curtains.

2000 lets you get out some of your more exotic units with out fielding a teeny army .
death wing work well at 2000
ravenwing too
at 1500/1000 the individual units just cost too much to form a effective force

fear the dark
fear the angels for we are death
darkangels 15000+ pts
sisters of battle 6000+ pts
imp fists full codex company (lord knows how many pts)
space wolves - under construction but well on its away to a grand company
retired (may return) after a codex fubar
next ???????(but there will be a lot of it)

See, I think 1500 is the ideal level. You have to make choices. And a lot of the armies that are over-the-top abusive at 1850 or 2000 have a hard time packing it all into 1500. I like having to make the tough choices about what to cut, and really streamline the army.

I was a big 1850 fan for a long time but I am warming up to 2000. It works well for IG and SM imo, and all armies have enough anti tank/MC/horde so as to not get overwhelmed by certain army builds.

2000 points lets you add in all the fun stuff you've been buying/building/painting and want to experiment with. I would say that it is the "sweet spot". But I also like 1000 pt games alot. The very small games force a higher quality of gereralship, with less room for errors. I like the tense games, where it all hinges on that one round of assult or that one round of shooting. Those are the good stories that you remember.

I enjoy 2000 pt games,at that amount of points an Ork army can truely be a horde, plus you can bring in all those fun units you just cant fit in to a 1500 pt game.

You say a lot of the over-the-top abusive armies are nasty at 1850 or 2000, but have trouble at 1500.....

What abusive armies are you talking about? Lash/PM/Oblit chaos is best at 1500, Nob Bikers are best at 1500.... Eldar bikers are better at 1500 than higher....

Just curious which abusive armies you are disussing when you say they can't fit it in at 1500

Personally I think most of the top cheesy builds right now favor 1500 and adding 2000 points just gives their OPPONENT an advantage in packing more stuff to kill them with!

I agree with Hancock, the most abusive points level is 1500

That is where Nidzilla, tri falcon eldar, lash chaos and nob bikers all shine.

2000 points is a no-go for current Space Wolves. 1500 or 2250 only

Personally I like 2250 the best. but dont mind the occasional 2000 or 1500

I will 'Necromance' this thread next Sunday to tell you how it went, and who did what cheese to whom.

So those specific armies get weaker as you go higher in points, but other armies get stronger... Fatecrusher, for example, is far more powerful at 2k than at 1500.

Just because a specific army is more powerful at 1500 than at 2000 doesn't mean that 2000 is more balanced, it simply means that a different army will be top dog.
