Hey halo, I just started the Guard. It depends on what you want to do with your Guardsmen as to whether $200 will be worth spending on them. I'm very lucky in that money is pretty easy right now as I just sold off years worth of M:tG cards and just pushed that over to
IG. Things you'll need, at a bare minimum, to meet the
FOC:
1HQ $35
2Troops (if veteran squads, you can be really cheap and just run vets). A 10 Guardsmen box retails for about $25, and will include 2 grenade launchers and2 flamers as special weapons. You will have to beg or buy things like plasma guns and melta guns, as you only get one of each in the command squad.
Additional good things:
Regimental Advisors: I think $15 for all three
Valkyries: $60
Chimaeras: $35
Leman Russ, basic: $40
Leman Russ Demolisher: $45
Heavy Weapons Squads: $35
So, just getting the bare bones will cost you $85. If you want to run mech vets, just getting the barebones into Chimaeras can run you another $105. Equip everyone with meltaguns, assuming you can find the bits, and you only come up to... mental math:
CCS 50pts + 40 for melta
Vet Sqd1: 70pts +30 for melta
Vet Sqd2: 70pts + 30 for melta
3 dedicated Chimaeras: 165
Totaling 455 points.
Obviously, if you're going to build your army for a less than competitive environment, or to just play for fun and add variety, you're going to pay even more for
IG as you're going to need to buy a lot more models than you would running the cuthroat meltavets style list.
Personally, I've dropped a lot of cash, likely close to $1500, and there's still more stuff I want to get (=I= models, maybe start a second Army that's NOT a horde as painting all this
IG is insane)
