So I think I am going to start painting some orks I have sitting around for a little change of pace... So I did my usual searching to see whats popular, so I can avoid it. Every now and then I see a red or brown ork, most are done well but I am not sure I could stand a whole army of red "greenskins".

What are your thoughts?

Some of the most well-painted Orks I've ever seen have been colors other than green.

I wholeheartedly encourage creative expression. Green orks are fine, but I don't think anyone should limit themselves to that just because it's the "official" color.

Other colours are great to see. I loved the reddish hues of the Uruk-Hai, and browns and golds are also very cool. The bright green used on GW's orks looks "unnatural" (obviously subjective for fictional creations), so I like to see earthy tones. Greens with a bit more yellow or brown are great. Mixing up your army would be fun too.

I figure if humies come in different flavours, why shouldn't orks?

Paint your orks yellow, it's your army.

wow LunaHound, you photoshopped that? Green is cool, but as it was said, there is no point on limiting yourself due to an "official" color.

In an interview, I read that orcs used to be brown.

I'd actually like to paint up a red ork.....

I'm going to go against the grain, and recommend green orks. Just because it's different doesn't mean it's good. Even if your skin colour is predetermined, there's still plenty of room to experiment on the rest of the models.

Green orks is da most killy.

It doesn't bother me to see different colored ork across the table from me. I always thought that if I built some orks I'd go with blue skin. Like maybe it was warpaint. I've seen some pictures of blue orks in the past and loved the way they looked.

Luna your photoshop mock up looked great btw.

I'm doing an blue ork force. There will be 100 of them. one will be wearing a dress, the warboss will be wearing red, and everyone else will be wearing white.

My wife's idea.

Deathskulls paint their skin blue cause it gives them good luck.

I can see evil suns doing the same (but with red)

I wanted brown orks with pink faces but they ended up being, very, very, very offensive. I would advise against brown orks.

As long as they're not just grey plastic, I don't really give a toss.

I've seen brown ones done as savage orks with spears and shields. Many stores did an 'orks drift' force to fight against praetorians when they came out.

I've seen blue ones. Even purple ones.

I've even seen ork-genestealer hybrids.

This is true, I myself like the more toned down colors myself. Unless of course you are a terrible painter like myself and want to make Über-geek themed armies.

Orks are green.
End story

Exceeeeeeept, if you are playing with orks that have scars or tribal markings, such as the Blu Toof clan or something. But even then you should make it fairly obvious that it is purposeful war paint. Unlike 'Nids I don't think orcs can come in different colour fashions. War paint is the only option for an altered ork army.
