How about a big book of special characters a la the old Champions of Chaos book?

Put in all the lost special characters (Solar Macharius, Commissar Gaunt, Cortes, Doom Rider the Rider of Doom), put in a ton of characters from books (Eisenhorn, Pater Sin), put in characters who change an army as a soft way of introducing new army lists.

A traitor General who lets you take mutants with your IG for Lost and the Damned. An Arbites guy who turns an IG force into Arbites, a savage ork dude who lets you take Squigoths etc. Every army could something new. Except the Dark Eldar of course. Cause they suck

GW would only have to make a dozen or so metal models, they'd sell tons of stuff and everyone would love it.

Till we find all the broken combos of course.

What do y'all think?

Love the idea.

It's a great way introducing some old flavour back and creating interest in playing the game with new rules.

However, GW won't do it unless it's accompanied b a cool plastic kit that is overpowered and sells by the bucket load.
So throw in an idea for a tie in model and you have a plan!

Well that's stupid easy too.

PLASTIC DOOM RIDER: RIDER OF DOOM!

Gives the whole army turbo boost, even if they're not on bikes!
Gives the whole army sonic blasters, even if they're not noise marines!
Gives the whole army feel no pain, cause he's got the best drugs!
Makes the whole army fearless, cause they've got DOOM RIDER: RIDER OF DOOM!
And best of all...
Can be taken by any army, not just Chaos!

CAUSE.
HE'S.
JUST.
THAT.
AWESOME!

Which can be taken in normal games but only if you but Sgt T. Hawk, Ace Thunderhawk Pilot.

Works for me.

I'd rather see them make in a 'non official' 40k expansion like APOC or CoD. Which, helps GW, because then they can do less 'playtesting'. Also use it to introduce some Legion-specific rules.

Great idea and would love to see it, but GW would never do it. A) books are a poor profit maker, b)metal characters ditto. They charge more for them because they sell far less than other kits and so the costs are split between fewer peices, it wouldn't be worth the shelf space to them. Maybe something Forgeworld could consider as a 'mini' book. Would be great to see it done though, and the ideas wicked! And I'd go for an arbites force if there were models. Personally I'd love the book and rather than make the characters, make expansions to use to create the themed army liek the space marine chapter boxes. Just think, a sprue to upgrade marine scouts to arbites, plus maybe some wheels and gaurd to make a city style chimera like on the back of an old WD years back.

The money (I think) would come from the models sold by the possibities the characters would unlock.

So if taking Character X makes Ogryns troops then GW not only sells a $17 model of him, but tons of Ogryn.

And so on...

Hell, all they have to do is follow the current trend and over cost everything 50 points and it would be balanced too. I'd kill for a Chaos HQ that was in the 60-70 point range. Even anything less than 100.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I love the idea, but it goes against GW's aim of 1 book per army. Won't happen.

Sad monkey is sad.

Meh.

Apoc, Planet! Strike!, Cities of the Deaf all require 2 books.

That's for the system, though. Not the army.
