So, I am starting to collect Space Wolves with an eye towards a new codex in the fall.

I have the 2 current and OOP codecii for them, and both have "Fenrisian Wolves" as part of the list..

Thinking that they will probably STILL have them in an upcoming list, I am racking my brains thinking of what to use from GW current models. (Or even close to scale non-GW figs)

Will Goblin Wolfrider wolves work, or will they be too small?

How about the plastic Dire Wolves from the VC range? I THINK they are all diseased and warped, but is it possible to make "healthy" wolves out of the sprues?

Another thought was to find a bunch of the Dire Wolf clix from Horror Clix and re-base them.. (they would be pre-paints)..

Dungeons & Dragons minis have the uncommon Vamperic Dire Wolf .. but I don't know the scale and it looks "chaos-y" anyhow..

any suggestions?

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

The fantasy Chaos wolves are "chaos-y" but a bargain at 10/$22. I've pondered using them for flesh hounds many a time.

You can use the goblin rider wolves which are more expensive ($35). I play space wolves 13th company and I use the chaos warhounds ($22 for 10) and then use green stuff to cover up the little hole where the horns go. I left the heel spikes alone since I use them in my background story of how the fernis wolves evolve them as an adaptation for climbing through the ice, snow, and rocky peaks of fernis.
Since the wolves are orginally from the wolves of earth and they are going to "evolve" on fernis and will look "different" from their earth ansestors.

13th company 2900 points nature at it's best

I use LOTR Wargs, they fit the bill pretty well. I did see some wolf types in a PP mini, but I wasn't paying too much attention...

GW sells Goblin Wolves in the bits section for like $10. Cheap and they look cool.

They're like kidnapping someone, and forcefeeding them heroin until they're hooked.

I just took a look at GW's site (I hadn't realized they'd added bitz back...well, sorta), and it's 5 wolves for $15 in bitz. You can get 10 in the wolf-riders box for $35, which would add a bunch of junk for the ol' bitz box for 5 bucks. Of course they'd be goblins...

LOTR wargs are your best bet. I was planning on using them in my 13th company list before GW expunged it for heresy. There are still some boxes for the warg army that are a good deal too.
