So you are saying at this phase you are only looking at models that appeals to you ( and there are a bit here and there between them )

Well cant help you much without details .

Small close combat sounds like

Tyranids ( warrior / genestealer )
Eldar ( scorpion / banshee )
Space Marines ( assault terminator / marine )
Orks ( nobs / commando / nob biker )
Necrons ( flayed one / pariah )

I would say orks and nids present the most balanced close combat oriented lists. Though I didn't vote for orks because it seems everyone plays them at the moment.

Voted for Eldar.
Not enough Eldar players in the world.

If you are serious and there arent many Eldar that will just make it even more appealing. I have narrowed it down to Eldar and Nids

Do you want tough things? Space Marines, Eldar, Orks, and Tyranids can all do low number close combat armies. Eldar suffer from fragility, while Ork and Tyranid low number lists are limited. The spess muhrens are probably your best bet (as a beginning army).

The eye of terror.

It is a common misconception that Eldar "suffer from fragility."

A jetbike seer council is one of the best CC units in the game, and with fortune cast on them are not fragile whatsoever.

Wraithguard are one of the toughest troops in the game (but again, find a way to fortune them).

Many Eldar units are fragile, but not all of them are.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

One which they greatly benefit from.

When you field an Eldar army that consists of 3+ saves, invulernable, in cover or re-rollable "fragilty" isn't really the right word to describe it.

I play an unconventional build that honestly doesn't work too well. However, I'm also smart enough to recognize what does work well, I just choose not to take it (well, not all of it). My Eldar is my "this stuff is cool" army.

Eldar is a horrible starting army choice unless you're a high level nerd. The army is complex and fragile (and has the most wargear/rules of any army currently).

I voted Eldar, but honestly, you *HAVE* to pick your army yourself, or else you'll just end up second guessing yourself, dropping it half way, etc...

Personally I play Eldar for my first/main army, and it's because well... I just like their whole concept. If you can, get ahold of the various codexes, or read fluff, find the one you like, and stick with it. Another option would be just to pick an army that appeals to you visually. (Again in my case Eldar are just sexy, end of story. I couldn't play any other race even if I tried.)

How the army plays etc, should be secondary, as you can learn that... but you can't really change something that's fundamentally "right" for you. Not too easily anyway.

What 'bout my star?~*

I think you should try building, painting, and playing with a troop choice of each army and decide from there.

Although I agree Eldar isn't a good starting army. With the rules and such.

95% of teens would go into a panic attack if the jonas brothers were about to jump off the empire state building copy and paste this if you are the 5% who would pull up a lawn chair grab some popcorn and yell JUMP BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly - why no chaos? Where's the love?

I chose Spase Marheens, as a) newish codex means up-to date rules, b) SM will always be supported by GW, and c) if you change your mind, its a quick conversion from SM to Chaos!

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

Another post asking others "what army should I play?".

....the most horrible way of choosing your next 500+ dollar time consuming project.

Here is a hint...

Dont ask others what you should play...especially when they know next to nothing about you and your personality.

Instead, choose the army where the models you think look the coolest, this is the army you'll be most inclined to paint and complete. Dont choose your army based on rules or tactical gimmicks.

Whats cool? Do you like Space marine tanks? Tyranid MC's? Harlequins? What excites you? You'll be more inclined to paint stuff that you think is awesome.

Like Eldar and Marines equally? THEN go to your rulebook and see what 1850 army list you feel exites you more....at that point it will be apparent what army you should start.

I refuse to vote on this poll. Why? Because every single person who votes here is WRONG!

THIS is how you choose an army, not by coming online and asking total strangers who know nothing about you what you should spend your money on.

Deadshane1 - This is a very good point. Perhaps a better idea is to ask people "why did you pick/do you stick with your army of choice"? or perhaps "What army did you abandon, and why?".

Responses to this question will give you an idea of the thought processes people go through when selecting armies!

I might be Biased. But Eldar!

Really, I have never enjoyed the hobby more than since I broke out of the power armoured armies and into the Space Elves.

P.M. me for rational Eldar Advice, both on list construction or Tactics.

Also feel free to query me about rules from the Eldar and Space Marine codices, as well as the General Rule book.

Mech Eldar army of the Craftworld Din Cassian currently at 17-6-7.
