Hi all,
My mate and I will be trying out flames of war, from some sources we have a few ideas and a shopping list to give the game a good go. firstly, we don't really care who gets what army so were both going to try them both out - i just have a few questions i would like to ask the dakkadakka community. Were getting the "open fire starter kit" and the "fortress europe" booklet and it was suggested to also get 1 infantry platoon for each side (here comes the questions)
1) Since we don't want to waste cash getting pointless units. what is the infantry platoon equivalents for the Germans, British, Russian, American, Australian's?
2) We don't mind collecting the germans (since we know its heavily orientated with tanks) but for the other option with the 3 sherman's we would like a force with a mixture or infantry and tanks which can include the 3 shermans, which forces would this include?
if you have any other suggestions etc, feel free to ask
cheers!

1) Grenadier (German) Rifle (British, Australian, US) Strelkovy Company (Russian).
2) All allied countries use Shermans in combination with infantry.

Don't forget!
After you've chosen your nation of choice, decide amongst your gaming group before you build your forces, which period you'll be fighting in: early, mid, or late. The points values and compositions are different in each of the eras (I actually don't think Early as a period is distinguishable from Mid, as of late).
Also, don't worry if you end up getting too many German players. Afterall, they're really the only axis force out there. There's no such thing as too many Germans!

Early War is a different period than Mid War, most definitely. It's also not covered by any official Intelligence Breifings for the current version of the game at the time being. For any Early War games, you'd be stuck using the Early War playtest rules on their forums plus you'd have to go to other manufacturers for the appropriate models.

*cough Italy *cough Romania *cough Finland *cough Hungary *cough Well I guess Romania doesn't count since they get flattened if anyone looks at them cross eyed, but Italy (Afrika), Hungary and Finland are all capable of fielding some strong armies. Plus with the Finnish you'll never have trouble finding a game.

Just be aware that if you're starting an Axis Minor Power (ie Italy, Hungary, Finland) then you won't have the option to play a legal Late War game. There are homebrew lists out there right now and Battlefront has a briefing under review for late war Finns, but that's the extent of those right now.

I also just started FOW; painted up a Sturm Division yesterday & then a mortar platoon, Tiger E, 3 StuG, four 7.5cm PaK40 Anti-tank guns and a pair of 8.8 PaK34 Anti-tank guns for Sturm Kompanie from the Stalin's Onslaught book. THEN I realized the 8.8cm PaK43's aren't even in that book! Can anyone recommend a mid-war list / book that would accommodate those same models? I'm hoping to save money & not buy more models just to make up a mid-war list.

I'm not aware of any mid war lists that use the PaK43. They're late war only in Flames of War IIRC.
Maybe one of the (post September) late war Grenadier lists will be suitable as I assume you're doing Sturmdivision for the massed Panzerfausts.

Yeah, you can't use PaK43s in Midwar in any list that I know of. I'd just use a regular Grenadier list, from Fortress Europe or something.
You could also use a Grenadier list in Midwar with everything except the PaK43s, then you'd be using almost everything.

Company boxes are the way most people around here start. It gives you enough bases to make some decent games. You can then pick and choose what other stuff you want to add as you learn how force org works and the way you like to play. Getting the theater books first is also a good idea as force org is a bit wanky.
I have a DAK panzer grenadier force that is done but I did waste a good amount of cash buying too much stuff I rarely use or does not fit force org.
I'm also slowly working on US airborne now which is just the company box with the following added. heavy mortars, 3 Shermans, a couple of GMC M10s and 3 P-38s(corgi nose art)
