This post is for Iron Warriors players only. If you do not hate the false emperor and his slaves with every shred of you fiber, best leave now.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on planetstrike? Iron Warriors background put them as siege specialists, which would make us be the attacker. Unfortunately, the attacker force organization chart leaves much to be desired in the ways of Heavy Support. The defender's FOC, on the other hand, has almost enough Heavy Support to make a proper Iron Warriors army. Will you prefer to play as attacker or defender? What type of army list/units will you use?

I've settled on defense primarily. I think that i will try to have an army list similar to the following, maybe bigger, but definitely not smaller.

2 x HQ Either daemon prince and sorcerer, or lord and sorcerer, but not lord and prince.
2 x Elite: veteran squads with mix of lascannon, meltas and flamers, set up in no-mans land to distract and harass the enemy
0 x fast attack: What is fast attack? Why would I have any of it?
2 + Troops: CSMs of course, 10 man squads with ?? (don't know what weapons to take on these guys yet)
6 x Heavy support ( If I remember corectly6 is max, if not I'll take the max) 2 Defilers, 4 Havocs ( 2 squads with 4 missile launchers each, 2 squads with 3 heavy bolters and 1 autocannon)

Don't have the points done yet, maybe tomorrow. Your thoughts/questions/comments welcome.

Iron Warriors is not Heavy Support Spam. The 3rd ed Chaos Codex Killed what little fluffyness Iron Warriors had to be replaced by "OMFG I CANT HAVE 4 BASSILISK ANYMORE WHAAAA!"

Iron Warriors are more often seen in Fluff as Defenders. They build these huge fortifications / killing fields and just shred Attackers as they come in.

Build an "Iron Cage"!

Iron Warriors are masters of siege warfare, which includes putting up fortifications as well as pulling them down. The Imperial Fists tend to get shoehorned more into the defender archetype due to being chosen to reinforce and garrison the Imperial Palace during the Heresy period. While the Iron Warriors still fought under the Emperor's banner, they were indeed a Crusade force, and broke open many opposing planetary defenses, which they then claimed and occupied as a garrison force.

The fluff tends to balance both aspects of their specialty (Storm of Iron, Dead Sky Black Sun, Honsou short stories, references in stories regarding Isstvan and other Crusade events). The common threads are tendencies towards elaborate entrenchments and Heavy Support including field gun batteries and allied Titan Legions, but this doesn't exclude infiltration tactics or less fortification-centric behaviors.

With regards to Planet Strike, the Defender FOC appears to me to best mirror Iron Warriors tactics on the offensive or defensive, especially since the first step in an IW offense is to establish a base camp that is basically a reinforced pre-fab fortress. So long story short, the modified FOCs do a crappy job of allowing "custom" armies, especially in a codex as poorly internally balanced as CSM.

Word Bearers, on the other hand, could probably make for an effective and fluffy Attacker force since you can spam the crap out of Summoned Daemons.

@sourclams: Totally agreed.

Iron Warriors "attacking" is kind of like expanding their "defense" over the opponent's defense...

Wow, I didn't know that all you guys played Iron Warriors, that's great! Anyways, I'm pretty good on the Iron Warriors fluff, as I have all the Chaos Codex back to both Slaves to Darkness and Lost and Damned, plus Epic Renegades ect ect. I was more interested in your opinions as Iron Warrior players on how you will play Planetstrike and what your army lists might be. But thank's for the positive input!

As for word bearers, I thought about it too, since daemons can assault when summoned. But an icon must be present on the board at the beginning of the movement phase for daemons to be summoned, so any daemons that came in on turn one would automatically be destroyed. So it turns out the CSM daemons are a bad idea. More bad news; Chaos Icons only work with terminators and Obliteraters, not other means of deep striking. So Icons are only of limited help, no extra boost during attacking.
