Doctor Thunder and I have been collaborating as of late on a fanfic based on his personal army (the ultra cool Black Widows) over in the Dakka Fiction thread. After helping him flesh out some ideas and co-writing Chapter 4 (shameless plug: GO AND READ IT as soon as you have replied to this post), I decided I'd like to get my own story going. I hope you dakkites out there will help me get the creative juices flowing. I'm thinking that it should be about the Eldar but definitely from a Imperial point of view. But anything that is interesting has a good chance of being made into a fanfic. (I promise to give story inspiration credits!) Thanks in advance for helping out!

BTW 200th post!!

Well, what kind of protagonist interests you?

The Emperor doesn't seem to do much for you but you sure are expected to be mutilated, suffer, and die to make him happy. And is he dead or what? If he's entombed that would mean he's dead as a doornail, right? So, how can he be happy about anything you do, or even give orders to anyone? Are you worshipping the dead now? Is that something you'd really want to do? Because it sounds freaking creepy to me.

I'm thinking of writing from the viewpoint of an everyday Imperial citizen caught up in the grim darkness. That might be problematic, however. I feel like writing from the SM or IG vantage point is too stifling. I'd prefer IG over SM, though.

Hadn't thought of that, actually. But that's certainly worth consideration. I was even thinking *GASP* non-military.

Well, civilian still doesn't narrow it down much.

What is his job? What kind of world is he from?

I know it's like pulling teeth, my extinct green friend, but you are actually being very helpful. I'll probably go with tech-priest.

Interesting, interesting......

What about a crew member on a Rouge Trader exploration ship as the main character? Or even a Tech Priest aboard such a vessel?

The vessel could be plying its trade out on the Eastern fringe when it comes across a lost Human colony that has developed along totally different lines to the Imperium. The story could be about the first contact, right up to the point of reunification to Imperial government! At the point of reunification the story could involve all kinds of standard WH40K factions, imperial and non imperial.......

Man down, Man down....

Rather than having just "one" main character, why not focus in on a small posse? That way you have multiple personalities to play off of, the possibility of split plot lines, or a split posse, tragedy when one dies, comedy when one farts, etc. You could have a tech magos and an explorator (unsure on the ranks, check Lexicanum!) , and a pair of servitors, for example.

Writing about a single refugee might not be all that interesting, really. All he's got is eye-witness accounts of people actually doing the killing. Unless you like writing about cowering and running?

It all depends how you narrate it though, really, and what YOU want to write about.

That's kind of the standpoint that my novel for my SM/IG system defense campaign. Main character starts as a civilian that ends up getting conscripted into the Guard. Seems to be a good choice judging by the way the first few chapters were recieved by my gaming buddies and the owner of the local FLGS

All very good ideas.

I especially like these:

And maybe even throw in reverse of this?

A techpriest character could have some interesting first-person perspectives, since it's in their nature to record and analyse things around them.

I would like a story with multi-plots and 1st person views on multiple characters (good books show this). One story with the IG would be great as a whiteshield recruit rising through the ranks with a small group of mates, some die - some live, some betray etc.

i really need to get a wh40k book...

good luck with the story!

You could use an arbites(policeman). This is non-military but you could still add some fight-scenes. Also, he would have access to information about eldar and what is happening, if it was just a civvy he probably wouldnt know what the heck is going on. This way he would have some basic knowledge so you could include names of units without knowing too much.
There could be a lot of other characters such as other arbites, his/her family and refugees.

Im kinda like han solo always stroking my own wookie.

Somewhere in the unknown universe.

Here'ds an idea. A squad of black widows is hanging out on a rogue trader outpost when it is attacked by Dark Eldar.

You have to have an Eldar pathfinder be one of the main good guys who helps the widows without them even knowing it.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.
