I've played some pretty good pulp stuff- especially tying in Cthulu backgrounds.

You forgot to add "GRIMDARK" to the poll selections!

I put down sci-fi for the GRIMDARK 40k and Star Wars

I voted for Historical, Sci-Fi, Steam Punk, and Wierd War 2. Flames of War is probably the game I've played the most, so I've really gotten to enjoy the historical side of things.

I also like Sci-Fi, not only 40k type stuff like Battlefleet: Gothic, but also games like Urban War (I love those minis!) I also think Steam Punk is an interesting take on a sort of "Alternate Fantasy" setting, and enjoy a lot of PP's stuff (as well as other non-PP Steampunk things).

Although I don't have any Wierd War 2 minis or games, it's a genre that I personally find really interesting (it's probably mostly because I played Wolfenstein a lot as a kid), and I'd really like to get a bit more into it at some point. Secrets of the Third Reich, Gearkrieg, and whatever the third one is (for the life of me I can't remember it) all seem like really interesting settings and games, and some of the minis just drip with coolness.

SF, steampunk and cyberpunk for me. Technology ftw! Well not necessarily technology as most people know it . . . I like zerg- or 'nid-style (biological) stuff too. Prolly would've voted for Weird War 2 if I knew exactly what it was.

Edit: I now know what Weird War 2 is . . . Wishing I could change my vote now.

I dislike much of the 40k fluff, but scifi is still my favourite genre. I wish there was an option for scifi without grimdark gothicness.

Yes, 40k is Sci-Fi. It's Grimdark, Gothic Sci-Fi, but still Sci-Fi.

Cyberpunk is also a Sci-Fi subgenre, but I figured it was distinct enough (particularly in the gaming industry) to warrant its own choice in a poll.

Cyber punk is very much like the Matrix while they where in the computer. Neuromancer is a great book that was at the forefront of the genre. Recommend it.

So if WW2 is your favorite Gonads, why don't you play Flames of War or another WW2 game? Or is WW2 just your new favorite?

I'm guessing you weren't born until the 90s then. It was a key period of 80s 'harder' SF. Humans modifying their bodies and minds with bionics to be 'better' because 'metal is better than meat'. It combined a fear of Global corporate takeovers with the dark and dingy. The distance between the haves and have-nots got larger. It was a zeitgeist thing.

The current reigning champion for the cyberpunk genre in miniatures is "Infinity". Think Blade runner crossed with the Matrix and Akira and The Maltese falcon and Fifth Element. High tech but not too far removed from "now" (not like star trek or 40k). It's not a bright shiny future.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

Sci-fi, for 40K. I limited myself to a single choice, as it said "favorite" and "wargaming genre." Excluding the possible convenience of picking two to avoid laboring over a split decision, there can be only one favorite, not to mention the fact that I haven't played anything else.

I do, however, dig the aesthetic and feel of other genres, namely steampunk (including the magic-infused varieties, like Warmachine), historical (WW2, ancients/medieval), and pseudo-historical (WW2 with zombies? Yes, please!).

Of course, it has to be done well. Within the sphere of miniatures, as well as without (especially without, where I have more experience), I've seen too much tacky crap labeled "steampunk" that looked like factory seconds of normal tacky crap that got coated in glue and hurled at an exploding clock factory, which just so happened to be surrounded my a moat of metallic brass paint. Likewise, I've seen "historical" figures that were "accurate" to the degree that my thumb resembles (and serves as) a coffee mug.
