Hey guys,so I have been looking around at non GW products.FOW struck my fancy and not really knowing much about it I thought I would ask you here on Dakka a question or two.

So anyway,I was thinking of starting a late war Soviet army mostly infantry backed by a tank or two.So I what books would I need?

Does FOW have codexes like 40k or is it just source books?

Which ever it maybe which ones would I need for a Soviet army?

Also which is the current rulebook and would you recommened buying the open fire starter set?

Thanks for your help in advance.
Regards
Deff.

Does FOW have codexes like 40k or is it just source books? - Yes, sort of, 'codices' will contain several army lists for various countries.

Which ever it maybe which ones would I need for a Soviet army? - Fortress Europe or any of the 'Bagration' books for Soviets.

Also which is the current rulebook and would you recommened buying the open fire starter set? - Buy the open fire box, it contains the rulebook and some tanks that can be used for Soviets (with a little work) or swapped with other players.

I've played Soviet infantry since v1. The Udarny Strelkovy out of the Stalin's Onslaught book are my current favorite. That book also has the Shtrafnoy (penal) battalion. The Hammer and Sickle book has Motostrelkovy (motorized) and Rota Razvedky (recce) infantry options. That book also has the juicy 30 T-34 list, which is fun for treadheads. River of Heroes gives you the Engineer-Sapper battaltions. If you're just starting out, you might want to go with Fortress Europe though, since it has the greatest range of options. They're a bit limited on options, but still plenty in there to keep you busy.

Thanks Bob I will be sure to take a look at some of the books you have mentioned once I properly get into FOW.
