I would assume it's black like oil. (rule of cool wins, clear gasoline would be hard to model)

Four scholars at Oxford were making their way down the street, and happened to see a group of ladies of the evening. “What’s this?” said the first. “A jam of tarts?” “Nay,” said the second, “an essay of Trollope’s.” “Rather, a flourish of strumpets,” advanced the third. “No, gentlemen,” concluded the last. “Here we have an anthology of pros.”

I would think red would be cooler, but black or a very dark translucent would make sense (if it's a hydrocarbon that is). Maybe it's green? Yeah green makes sense. Template's are green arent they?

What complaining about how it should have been "What color is Prometheum?"
Who really cares

I think it would be green. It could be like oil, but that's if they managed to find another source of it other than Earth. Which shouldn't be too hard really. I think it would probably have different colours depending on where they are in the galaxy though. Becuase the Imperium takes up so much space, it would be likely that different places would have Prometheum at different stages of refinary. Some might even use different sources all together. The only constant would probably be the blessed Prometheum used in the Flamers. I think of Prometheum as not one type of fuel, but as a way they describe all the fuel sources used for the Imperial Combustion engines.

Obviously though the ships would need it to be at the best stage of refinary in order to be efficient enough for the ship to work. But that's thinking about it

I'd go for (in order of refinary I guess, they can be in any order of preferance. But, the black would be the one at the lowest stage of refinary) Black, Red, Blue and Green (like the templates)

Ships don't use Prometheum, they have plasma reactors. (take that physics!)

That makes more sense I guess, somehow. It doesn't really
I don't really look into this stuff that much (Why would I need to know what the battle ships run on anyway ) and just said it because it was mentioned in the OP. Probably ment the little ones though.

Still its good to know for modeling stuff I guess.

Interesting:
From the wiki
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Promethium
Promethium is the 40K equivalent of napalm, and is used in flamers to provide a lethal stream of fire. If properly blessed, it can be used for incinerators, and thus can be used by the Ordo Malleus and Ordo Hereticus to purge their enemies. It is also the standard military fuel, used for tanks and planes. Promethium can burn in space and underwater, making it extremely useful for boarding actions where the enemy might not expect to see flames in an airless environment. The term Promethium is used to describe any petroleum product that fits this description. It is not, however, always the exact same element due to variance from different worlds and processing methods. The variance is so small that one can't be distiguished from another, which is why the use of a single term 'Promethium' is used.

So using Napalm as a basis, it would be a brownish sticky syrup.

However Promethium is an actual element:
http://www.webelements.com/promethium/
Great care is required while handling promethium as a consequence of its radioactivity. Promethium salts luminesce in the dark with a pale blue or greenish glow, due to their high radioactivity. Ion-exchange methods led to the preparation of about 10 g of promethium from atomic reactor fuel processing wastes in early 1963.

So the promethium of 40k is not real, and can be any colour you want. Personally i would like to see it as a radioactive Green/Blue - could get some very cool effects from talented painters!
