So, having left all of my Scenery to a game store in Texas (Hey, the trailer was FULL) I'm contemplating building the collection back up.

However, as I'm pretty much a 5th ed n00b ( ) I could use some assistance.

I've been reading some threads, talking about '5th edition scenery' or adjusting 4th ed terrain to 5th ed rules. I've also read the main rulebook's take on how terrain works.

So, could folks either answer here, or point me to a thread that helps me understand the needs of 5th ed terrain? I already understand that 'LOS' is now brutally important, up to and including reading about some [redacted] soul who glued their Devastator Squad to the top of a Land Raider that stood on its nose. Stay classy, Warhammer 40K.

I'd like to understand:

Buildings (Ruined or otherwise)
Woods
Hills

Additionally, some understanding of how walls such as defensive barricades work, bunkers, etc.

Thanks for your help!

Basically, you want your terrain to always have some impact on line of sight. You can't just drop down a felt piece of area terrain, because it will no longer impede sightlines.

Buildings are good. Get some opportunities for elevated positions and it'll be great. Ruins should have floors no more than 3" apart in elevation, so units can stay in cohesion across multiple floors.

Hills are good for elevation changes, but I don't personally think they justify their footprint when determining terrain density. My buddies and I have remedied this by determining that we either don't count them as terrain for calculating how much we use, or it counts as half as big as it really is. Make sure they're tall enough to give a vehicle a cover save and let infantry get out of LOS if it's a center-table hill.

Woods should have a base to define the size of the woods, and a few removeable trees to let you determine how far up its LOS implications extend. Remove trees as necessary to move models, but consider them still there for height considerations.

Is table density standard still "25%"? (Aside from, say, Cityfight tables)

25% is still recommended, yeah.

And not enough.

The more terrain, the better the game.

Because unlike 4th in 5th models can snipe through several buildings to kill something if they line up correctly with windows, doors and holes. Like on the IG release day at the local GW, they brought in the valk and it floated in front of a building. It then shot through the window to kill the small transport tank trying to get close enough to try to get rid of it.

Area terrain is really popular around here due to the abundance of cover it provides.
