Hello guys and... gals?

I know you must get quite a few of these threads but i thought it worth asking anyway.

I'm just starting again after nearly 10years away from the game, i have nothing, no models, no books, a clean fresh slate and nothing more.

I used to collect Guard amongst many others however i've always had a thing for Blood Angels and Dark Angels. I like that twist in the history and the darker sides of their characters.

So, to start with i plan on buying and painting a few models and i'm wondering if you have any suggestions, what are the best to paint from an interesting/more detailed perspective. I will probably not start playing for a few weeks/months yet and so game wise i'm not too fussed how great or poor they are.

I remember back when Azrael? and Ezekiel? (maybe) came out...way cool! ... DO i remember that or am i imagining things

The Blood Angels codex is available for free online. The Guard just got a new codex. The new starter set (Assault on Black Reach) has a great offer on miniatures, dice, and the rulebook, for a pretty good price.

My advice is always to go for the models and background that appeal to you, and if that's Dark Angels with their robed Marines and their Unforgiven (Secret, Secret, they've got a secret) past, then more power to you.

However, the Dark Angels Codex is near-universally viewed as being underpowered and this is particularly noticeable in comparison to Codex Space Marines, where certain equipment works diffferently despit being ostensibly the same thing.

If you are in to the background Aspect, then the Black Library has Angels of Darkness, a stand alone novel by Gav Thorpe that gives many hints of the background.

Those hints have been fleshed out a little in the Horus Heresy series with Descent of Angels and Fallen Angels (the latter of which is excellent, the former, not so much) so if you're a fluff gamer, I recommend them.

One advantage of Dark Angels Deathwing is that it'ss a low model count army, so if you're a slow painter you can get a decent force painted faster than some ungodly gribbly horde of Orks...

Definitely true.
However, small elite forces are hard to play and require some experience and skill.
