Proxy first...?

Necrons are an all or nothing army in 5th edition. Many people dislike them because of the nerfbat they received at the hands of the new vehicle damage charts, but the top players can still do very will with them. If you're new to warhammer or wargaming in general, look elsewhere. Otherwise, if you can take the challenge, there's a good army in that codex... somewhere...

Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win. -- Sun-tzu
The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get at him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on. -- Ulysses S. Grant
Armies and records (w/l/d) (1v1 only)
Orks: ~8500pts -- 2009: 52/2/7 & 17/2/6 in RTTs -- Casual size 85% Painted
Empire: 7000pts -- 2009:19/6/11 & 3/1/5 in RTTs -- Casual size 50% Painted
Marines: 2000pts -- 2009: 4/2/0 -- 20% Painted
Kroot Mercenaries - ~1500pts -- 2009: 0/1/1
Vampire Counts: 1850pts -- 2009: 9/3/4 -- Paint? We're dead...
Skaven (Work in Progress) - ~4000pts -- 2012: 1/1/1 -- Unpainted
Tau (Work in Progress) - 1500pts -- 2012: 5/1/1 -- 20% Painted

Don't.

It completely sucks to play against Necrons. It's a boring grind to knock the same models down again and again and again, killing the occasional model while the Necrons pick away at you.

Others have likened playing against Necrons as akin to scrubbing a pot clean.

Pick something else, anything else, and your opponents will thank you for it.

Necrons are difficult to use correctly ATM and require a solid understanding of the rules of the game as well as strategy.

That being said I think they are an awesome army, just not one for beginners.

A Word of warning though, the rumor mill has it that their next codex will be written by CS Multilazorz Goto (for the lore) and matt ward (rules) which will change the face of Necrons forever.....

Necrons, while not the strongest codex, look really cool, are fun and easy to paint, and are fun to play against. also, they'll be getting a new codex early next year.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

Well, Necrons get a new codex soon.
I'd start with Lord, 2x10 Warriors, Monolith, and 8 Immortals.

the battle force is one of the best deals around. That and a lord would be a good place to start IMO. Necrons are quite an inexpensive army as long as you stick to the plastic, because everything costs so many points you can have a 2000 point army in no time.

I would wait. So many of their models are 10+ dollars each because they are metal and come in blisters. Friend of mine just started and he is having to spend 2-3 times as much as me to get similar points worth of units.

First of all, I wasn't trolling. I was giving my opinion. Necrons aren't the strongest codex, but there are some good strategies such as tri-monolith assault. They are both fun and easy to paint (drybrush boltgun metal with other details). THey are also fun to play against. I have never had a game against Necrons that wasn't extremely fun. Their strange rules set leads to some unexpected turns and an unpredictable game result. So, as you can see, I was not trolling, but giving reasons for someone to play Necrons. Which is what Wolfie asked for, wasn't it?

OK, if you say so.

I just read it as extremely sarcastic and trolling:
- look cool = plain boxes and grey skeletons?
- fun & easy to paint = one color army
- fun to play against = untrue for many, many players

I'm sorry we're not all as uncreative as you then, jeez. The necrons are fun to play and to paint.

I have 7 armies, so when I play with my friends, I tell them to pick which army they want to fight against. Top two picks: Tyranids and Necrons.

Or perhaps it is your obvious troll that is obvious? MAH MIND IS BLOWN!

Tombworld El'Lahaun 2500pts
Hive Fleet Vestis 5000pts
Disciples of Caliban 2000pts
Crimson Fist 2000pts
World Eaters 1850pts
Angels Encarmine 1850pts
Iron Hospitalers 1850 pts (Black Templar Successor)
Sons of Medusa 1850pts
Tartarus IXth Renegade Legion 2500pts

I think they're a great starter army because you only have 8 choices... period. 1 type of troops, and about 1-2 of everything else. It's easy to put together a list and not get lost in options because they don't really have any. And I also think they look cool even if they aren't nearly as competitive as other races.

Tired of reading new rulebooks... Just wanting to play.

They do look cool- I like the look of robot zombies armed with weapons that flay the target molecule by molecule.

Their artwork is awesome, and manages to show a lot of emotion (mostly agony and anger) despite the fact that the robots are competely soulless, but the models themselves are very boring. If GW could get them to actually look like that, they'd be some of the coolest miniatures out there.

One thing I really like about them is, despite their soullessness, you can model or draw emotion, as Fafnir said.

point and case.

necrons are fun to play as, it's just a little difficult to understand some of their rules at first.

@JohnHwangDD; they aren't a one color army, i have mine done with three main colors and squad markings on the shoulders.

although you probably should stick to the plastics... flayed ones are expensive for a four man minimum.
