I was thinking of starting a imperial guard freedom fighter army. Im sure there are some none chaos corrupted armies that have had enough taking Shiz from the High Lords of Terra and all the corrupted Imperial lords and have secceded from the Imperium only to be labled traitors,heretics and scum( the usual imperial bullcrud). That is my idea for a force of Socialist Gaurds. I really really love the new guards but I hate the Imperium sooooo much. Please dont shoot down my idea I really cant wait to get started on it!

Go for it, give it a nice rag-tag theme, nothing cadian-ish. My friends collecting a Penal legion army thats a bunch of Catachans in orange jumpsuits.

Yea I know what you mean! Im think of using cadians (because catachan arms piss me off) xept being very conversion heavy and making em look poorly equipped and out dated!( Here I come weapon conversions)

Also, they may have simply hated the pompous, bloated aristocracy that fed off them, while still believing themselves to be loyal to the Imperium. The governer labels them heretics so he can put down the rebellion.

I was toying with this idea for a while too. I thought about using non-cadian minis (vostroyans or steel legion) and soviet tank models. Background-wise, stuff like this is perfectly plausible. There are many reasons to be pissed off of the imperium, and if you're in a far off part of the galaxy, chances are you won't be bothered for a while if you secede. Your system might also have been enclosed by a warp storm for a couple of centuries, making all contact impossible.

But seriously I just looked at steel legion and i like the helmets! Maybe something like a steel legion/cadian mix and as for my army believing in the Imperium... id rather not. They just want freedom without all the imperial drama

The Ultra Marines novel the Killing Ground has a great theme on this, about pro-Imperial freedom fighters fighting against Imperial troops.

If you like the steel legion heads Pig Iron makes a very similar helmet with gasmask head you can use. I am using them for all my guardsmen on cadian bodies and am pleased with the look.

As for painting try use red.

Give them red armbands and such to show that they're different from the imperium, and part of a makeshift resistance.

There's no reason, as it is, to not use Cadians depending on the world you decide to use as your background, given that the Cadian equipment is considered standardized throughout the Imperium.

But eh, you can go nuts and depending on how you want them to look "ragtag", there's fairly easy ways to do it even using the Cadians.

Stuff like scoring the armor with your hobby knife, filing off the Aquilas, etc.

well its a bad pun but using tallarns would be really close to preexisting freedom fighters. How steel legion would look very cool, but they strike me as hard to give them that kind of ragtag desperation in a freedom fighters clothing and equipment. Also if you can the Tanith models (if they still make them) would look pretty cool for your purpose, ignoring the whole fluff aspect.

Also chipping the armour and some of the marauder heads might make the look more rag-tag

Soviets have to many in numbers to be freedom fighters. Freedom fighters are supposed to be limited in numbers and tech, so they must turn to other tactics to win.

As well cheese is right The soviets will quietly slip their listening bugs into the heads of the models. Then when the government confiscates them because you didn't paint them to government codes and you must there for hate America the models wind up in CIA headquarters and suddenly Russia knows we're planning to give aid to Africa and they start WWIII to stop us. Hurry Cheese, we must reveal the conspiracy.
