Ultramarines are outragously roman.
Imagine the gayest guy you can, double that level of gayness and imagine him being in the closet for 40 years then bursting out in a flourish of homosexuality.
That is the level of outragousness that the Ultramarines have when it comes to their roman like ways.

I always identified the World Eaters with the celts. War paint, savagery and all that.

Ultramarines seem more like the roman legions, with a little bit of Athenian boy loving thrown in.

Emperors Children are drag queens

Night Lords and Raven Guard, being made up of convicts and slaves as they are (I think), are more like the first Australian settlers.

The Salamanders home world mirrors Hawaii when the volcano erupts. Also I don't see you providing an answer to salamanders.
Actually now that I think about it Alpha Legion and Raven Guard seem like S.W.A.T. teams.

Raven Guard really aren't culturally themed they're just more edgar allen poe themed but I think australians is as close as ur gonna get with the whole slave thing, and although i can see why you would say salamanders are hawaian or polynesian themed they are more vulkan or hephaestus (roman and greek god of the forge and fire) and dragon themed than culture but some chapters like ultramarines, white scars, space wolves, thousand sons definate cultural themes remember 40k is not just influenced by history, but literate (ex Dante, and Inquisitor lord Karamazov) and ancient lore, mythology, ancient religions, and the daemons of the goetic theurgia (Asmodai, Marchosius, Azrael, Belial), biblical (horus and the emperor, Librarian Ezekial, as well as these historical and cultural reference (tallarn (lawrence of arabia, vostroyans are cossacks, catachans are american nam vets), tolkienesk fantasy (eldar, orks), and modern sci fi (Necron-terminator, Tyranids- Aliens)

I'd put Salamanders more as Italy during the Renaissance. They do practice war, but also pride craftsmanship, seeing as the Sallys home planet is full of smiths and artisans.
As for Dark Angels, I'm seeing them as Middle Ages too, but more of the time of the Inquisition, what with hunting for the fallen.

I would put the Emperor's Children at the Renaissance as well, as they focused on the perfection of form, whether in looks, combat, speech etc. In Fulgrim it talks about how they made everything (at least initially) very beautiful and commissioned great works of art, with the Primarch and commanders serving as patrons to the artists, much like in Renaissance Italy.

Hmmm.. I would go with Night Lords being based on the penal battalions of the 3rd riech more than Australian convicts, Luna Wolves i would say are Anglo Saxon and not Brits, brits is a made up term that takes in the whole of the British Isles so that would include the Celtic races and you have already plumped for Celts to be world eaters so I dont think you can have them in both. Iron Hands I would say are based on Sci Fi from the victorian era that saw Industrilisation as the way forward, or even the Victorians themselves. Dark Angels I dont see them as Gay at all, more Templar based.

But hey only my guess ask the folk who wrote/designed them where the ideas came from.

I was going to say The Word Bearers are like Jehohvah's Witnesses. Except thats in bad taste...

The Iron Hands are a Borg spinoff, SM style, since they can't stand human flesh and slowly cybernetically augment themselves.

Whereas the Iron Warriors are a spinoff of The German Army circa WW1 with massed artillery and constantly building trenches and bunkers.

And I always thought the Night Lords were meant to be emulating Vampires (Bats), or Dracula with their perference for the dark and such.

I would put Blood Angels down as ancient Greek as well as being vampires. Many of their names are from Greek mythology, and they're also artsy-fartsy.

I see where you're coming from with Judge Dredd for the Night Lords, but Curze is more like Batman taken to the extreme. Dredd ridgedly adheres to the law where as Batman and Curze and both vigelantes. Plus the whole symbol of fear thing.

Also am I the only person who thought russians regarding the Death Guard? Peasant rising up against overlords etc? Plus giving your self to Nurgle to stay alive screams russian pragmatisim.

The Emperor's Children are based off those Korean guys who we're conscripted by the Japanese and fought the Russians in 1939, were captured and forced to fight on the Eastern front, were captured again by the Germans and deployed against and captured by the Americans at D-day.

Dark Angels are outrageously gay.
Imagine the most roman centurion you can, double that level of dedication to roman culture and imagine him being at war with the gauls for 40 years then bursting out in a flourish of romanistic patriotism.
That is the level of outrageousness that the Dark Angels have when it comes to their homosexual ways.
